Yes, Mo Xiaobai had another prophetic dream. While everyone was waiting for the apocalypse to arrive, she too was waiting with them, but somehow, she actually fell asleep while sitting there.
Then she dreamed of a swarm of zombie sharks suddenly appearing and attacking the ability users who were still “retrieving corpses.” At that time, about 200 ability users had gathered in City L, and in the end, almost all of them were zombified.
You have to understand, this was an ability-user team!Once zombified, they directly became mutant zombies capable of using abilities — intelligent ones, some even highly intelligent — with the potential to evolve into zombie kings.
That meant on the very first day of the apocalypse, there would already be zombies capable of using abilities — something that should normally appear only after the Red Rain, and even then, only a few among massive zombie hordes would mutate that way.If so many appeared right from day one, the small advantage humanity had painstakingly built would vanish completely.
Although Mo Xiaobai’s Merit System had allowed humanity to prepare in advance, once these mutant zombies appeared in populated areas, it would spell catastrophe. They would accelerate the virus’s spread and eventually form organized zombie swarms.
So, as soon as Mo Xiaobai woke up, she reported it immediately.
All elite ability-user teams received the alert and rushed toward the coastal cities, ready to handle potential zombie-beast appearances. Since they’d shown up in City L, other cities could face the same threat.
At the same time, the ability-user teams tasked with “retrieving corpses” were notified to stay on high alert and prioritize their own safety.
City L
“They’re here — everyone, prepare!”Fang Yu, formerly a “strategist,” and a psychic-type ability user, was the first to sense the approaching zombie-shark swarm.
All the ability users immediately entered combat mode.
But the results were poor. Most of the zombie sharks were under the surface, impossible to target precisely. The users’ abilities couldn’t effectively strike underwater. Photon rifles helped somewhat, but the new-energy rounds were costly, and without precise headshots, they couldn’t kill — so the battle quickly reached a stalemate.
“Everyone, get off the water! I’m releasing the Thunder Domain!”Luo Yifan’s serious voice rang out.
Indeed, as the only one capable of large-scale thunder attacks, Luo Yifan was the key to breaking the deadlock.
At once, everyone withdrew from the sea — fliers took to the sky, others retreated to a safe distance.
When Luo Yifan confirmed everyone was clear, he nodded to Li Bai. The two ascended together, hovering above the zombie-shark swarm.
As Luo Yifan’s energy surged, a domain of lightning formed around him, about ten meters wide. It didn’t seem huge, but the dense arcs of dark-purple lightning crackled through it — when they struck the sea below, countless zombie sharks convulsed and floated up to the surface, proof of its power.
Almost simultaneously, a larger zombie shark suddenly breached the surface, letting out a piercing shriek.
“Not good — a zombie beast with awakened psychic mutation!” Fang Yu quickly realized the danger and erected a psychic barrier around the two men, though his face turned pale. Only after chugging an energy vial did he look a little better.
Even so, Li Bai almost lost control and fell from the sky — no one had expected that shriek to carry a psychic attack. Fortunately, the barrier had come up in time.
Luo Yifan instantly countered with another lightning strike — a bolt speared straight through the shark’s open jaws into its brain, killing it instantly.
Li Bai recovered and quickly flew Luo Yifan away, wary of more mutants, then swallowed his own energy vial.
When the mutant shark appeared, Luo Yifan had still been casting Thunder Domain and nearly lost focus. Thankfully, his ability level was already tier 3 and his mental strength solid; with Fang Yu’s shield timely in place, he was only slightly drained. Still, the spell consumed enormous energy — another vial down the hatch.
Yes, although the research institute hadn’t yet found a way to manufacture energy fluid, Mo Xiaobai had exchanged plenty through her Merit Points. In emergencies, it was literally lifesaving. Every operative carried one vial — no more.
Since Luo Yifan’s squad had Mo Xiaobai, their supply was ample — with a mobile Merit Mall in the team, they could restock anytime.
“Whew! That was close — thanks, brother!”Back on the helicopter, Li Bai clapped Fang Yu hard on the back, still shaken. They’d been through life-and-death trials before, but this was different. No matter how many zombie movies you’ve seen or how mentally prepared you think you are — facing one for real is disgusting beyond words.
Now, as the lightning faded, countless twitching zombie sharks resurfaced around the Thunder Domain’s area — yes, still alive. Most were merely paralyzed; to kill zombies for good, you had to blow up or sever the head.
At once, the ability users in the helicopters attacked from above, aiming their long-range abilities at the exposed shark heads, while the psychics stayed alert for sudden ambushes from any other mutants.
Instantly, bursts of energy lit up the sea — five-colored, dazzlingly beautiful… if you ignored the revolting zombie fish beneath.
“Officer Luo’s amazing! One round of thunder and those slippery disgusting things just lay there waiting for us to hit them — feels great!” some joked over the comms.
Then Fang Yu’s warning cut in — something big was coming.
Everyone’s smiles vanished; the helicopters climbed sharply.
Below, a massive dark shadow rushed through the water — in seconds it reached the battlefield. It had to be the leader of the zombie-shark swarm.
A sudden waterspout spiraled up beneath Luo Yifan’s helicopter, dragging it downward.
Moments later, several more waterspouts formed, tearing toward nearby helicopters.
Another mutant — and judging by its strength, a tier-2 wind-type. They might as well call it the Zombie Shark King.
“All wind-type users, release abilities immediately! Help the helicopters escape the twisters’ range!” Luo Yifan barked orders.
“Everyone else, keep clearing the nearby zombie beasts and stay safe. Nirvana Squad, with me!”
Yes — even though Luo Yifan’s team had dropped their old codename under pressure, their squad name remained. Every team had one.
Their old name had been prestigious — “Pangu,” a title reserved for only the top special-ops unit, not suited for them now. So they kept “Nirvana Squad,” symbolizing rebirth from ashes — fitting, since in Mo Xiaobai’s dream, they’d all died once already.
Nirvana Squad members closed in on the Zombie Shark King.
Mo Xiaobai instantly released Little Ying. After completing the safe-zone mission, it had awakened and advanced to tier 2.
Little Ying rooted itself firmly onto the shark king’s back, sucking blood while whining in a soft, childish voice:“So stinky, so stinky, my dear master! I’m all dirty now, waaah!”
Mo Xiaobai suddenly froze — that was a zombie beast! Its body was full of zombie virus — could that blood even be safe to drink?
“Little Ying, does that hurt you? Stop sucking randomly!”
“No worries — just stinky! I can still use it~”
At that moment, Little Fuwa popped out to join the commotion.
“Host, don’t worry! Blood-sucking vines are immune to any toxin. When they absorb blood, they only take in nutrients or energy and expel the impurities.”
Only then did Mo Xiaobai relax.
While they chatted, the others’ attacks landed. Fang Yu cast a psychic illusion, making the not-so-bright Shark King think it had already wiped out all those pesky little fish and was now receiving its subjects’ worship.
Lacking pain sensation, the monster didn’t even react when Chu Jue’s space blades sliced through its neck.Mo Xiaobai immediately extended a vine to catch the falling shark head.
After all, Little Fuwa had said that mutant zombies usually carried crystal cores — vital for making energy fluid, and useful for helping ability users advance levels.
