Chapter 8: Are you Fucking Kidding Me?!

My Calamity-Tier Villainess Hate Me

The iron gates of Oakhaven towered fifty feet above us, their black spikes glinting under the rainy moonlight.

Just as I took a step toward the entrance, my HUD flared again.

DING! DING! DING!

[NOTICE: RECALIBRATION OF THE STATS]

[System Adjustments Implemented:]

[Auxiliary Entity Seal Engaged:]Second Calamity Entity ’Lilith’ has been locked within the Soul Database.

[Second Calamity Unlock Requirement:]Accumulate 3,000 Soul Essence.

[Kill-Scaling Removed:]Artificial stat-accumulation via monster kills has been permanently disabled. Real progression now requires Soul Synchronization, Axiomatic Comprehension, and direct Essence Refinement.

[REMOVAL of Somatic Accumulation]Physical contact with Villainous Entities no longer grants Aether/Essence refills or Max-Pool capacity boosts.

I stopped dead in my tracks. I stared at the crimson HUD text, reading the last line three times to make sure my eyes weren’t playing tricks on me.

"Are you fucking kidding me?!" I roared at the empty air.

"What are you screaming at, insect?" Valeska asked, her voice cold as ice as she stepped up beside me, her obsidian armor glistening in the rain. "Have you finally lost the few intellect fragments you possessed?"

"This son of a bitch System removed my last bit of cheat!" I yelled, pointing at the floating text box that she couldn’t see. "No more essence refills from touching you! The requirement to unlock Lilith got jacked up from 2,000 to 3,000!"

Valeska listened to my rant, her featureless visor glowing with a quiet, dangerous red light.

Then, she let out a low, condescending scoff.

"Good," Valeska said, her tone dripping with satisfaction. "Now you no longer have any reason to place your filthy hands on my skin."

"I was using that refilled energy to keep you summoned!" I shouted back. "Do you realize what this means?! My essence pool is capped at 520! If I run out of juice in a fight, you disappear, and I get turned into a pancake!"

"Then do not run out of juice," Valeska replied simply, crossing her heavy armored arms over her chest. "Learn to fight with your own body instead of relying on cheap tricks."

Before I could curse out again at the System, a loud, raspy laugh echoed from the guard post beside the iron gate.

"Well, well! Look what the storm dragged in!"

Three heavily armed mercenaries stepped out from the stone guardhouse. They didn’t wear official Sol-Valen armor; instead, they were decked out in mismatched leather and iron, covered in scars and tattoos.

The leader, a bald guy with a spiked iron club resting on his shoulder, sneered at us.

"Oakhaven entry fee is 50 Gold Coins per head," the bald leader barked. "Or hand over that fancy black armor your tall girlfriend is wearing, and maybe I’ll let you keep your legs."

I looked at the bald mercenary. Then I looked at Valeska.

"Fifty Gold Coins?" I asked. "Bro, I don’t even have fifty copper coins. I was working a minimum-wage job twelve hours ago."

"Then you die here, peasant. Letting us enjoy your girl" The leader grinned, raising his spiked club. "Get ’em, boys!"

Valeska’s visor flared with red murder intent. She reached behind her back to draw her six-foot black greatsword.

"Valeska, wait!" I snapped, grabbing her gauntleted wrist. "Don’t use your sword! A single swing from that greatsword costs me 50 Soul Essence! I only have 520 total!"

Valeska froze, her red visor narrowing at me through the rain. "You dare order me? I spare no one who talks dirty about me."

"No, that’s not it. I am ordering you to save my fuel!" I said. "Let me handle this!"

I stepped in front of her, facing the two charging mercenaries.

Without kill-scaling or infinite essence refills, I had to rely entirely on what I had: [Endless Resilience], [Adaptive Resonance], and [Ashen Pulse].

The first mercenary lunged at me, thrusting a rusty spear directly at my throat.

[Adaptive Resonance Lv. 1 Active!]

My body automatically reacted. I didn’t step back—I leaned inward, letting the spearhead graze past my ear. I caught the wooden shaft with my left hand, pulled the mercenary toward me, and delivered a heavy, essence-infused palm strike to his chest.

"Ashen Pulse!"

BOOM!

A shockwave of black kinetic force exploded from my hand. The impact shattered his leather vest and blasted him thirty feet backward into the iron gate, knocking him out cold.

[Soul Essence Expended: 20]

[Current Pool: 500 / 520]

The second mercenary tried to swing an axe at my ribs. I raised my left forearm to block.

CRACK!

My forearm bone fractured from the heavy iron blade.

[Endless Resilience Lv. 1 Active!]

[Bone Fracture Repaired Instantly (100%)]

The pain was sharp, but my trait knitted the bone back together in half a second. Before the mercenary could pull his axe back, I grabbed his neck with my regenerated arm and drove my knee straight into his groin, followed by a right hook to his jaw.

He crumpled into the mud, groaning.

The bald leader with the spiked club stood frozen, his jaw hanging open. ’The fuck? He blocked an axe with his bare arm?’

"H-Hey, who the hell are you... how can someone block an axe with their bare arm?!"

"Yeah, I’m built different," I panted, wiping the rain from my eyes. "Now, are you gonna let us into Oakhaven, or do I have to take you down too?"

The bald leader swallowed hard, looking at his two unconscious buddies in the mud, then at Valeska, who was still standing behind me radiating apocalyptic heat.

"G-Gate’s open! Go ahead!" the leader squeaked, pulling a lever on the wall.

The massive iron gates groaned and slowly creaked open, revealing the dark, neon-lit, lawless streets of Oakhaven.

We walked through the iron gates, stepping into the chaotic heart of the city.

Oakhaven was a nightmare of vertical architecture. Jagged stone buildings stretched three stories high, connected by wooden sky-bridges. Alchemical streetlamps glowed with eerie green and purple light, casting long shadows over crowded markets filled with hooded cutthroats, rogue mages, and monster-slayers.

"Not bad, kid," a low, smooth voice called out from the dark alley beside us.

I turned. Leaning against the stone wall was a woman wearing a dark leather trench coat, her face hidden beneath a wide-brimmed hat. A glowing blue cigar rested between her lips.

"You handled those gate-trash without wasting your Aether," the woman said, blowing a ring of blue smoke into the rain. "Smart. In Oakhaven, a man who wastes his essence dies on his first night."

Valeska’s visor flared. "Who are you to address us, shadow-dweller?"

"Name’s Raven," the woman said, stepping into the green lamplight. She had a sharp jawline, short silver hair, and twin enchanted revolvers holstered at her hips. "I’m a senior broker for the Underworld Mercenary Guild."

Raven looked at me, her sharp blue eyes scanning my wet jeans and my F-Rank badge.

"An F-Rank holding a Calamity-tier tether," Raven murmured, a slow, dangerous smile spreading across her face. "You’re the 100,000 Gold fugitive the High Empire is hunting, aren’t you?"

I reached for the steel dagger at my waist. "You here to collect the bounty?"

"Hah! Collect an Imperial bounty? Please," Raven laughed, flicking her cigar ash into the rain. "The High Empire executed my entire squad three years ago. I’d rather burn their gold than help those holy hypocrites."

She looked at me, her eyes glinting with professional interest.

"You want to reach 3,000 Soul Essence to unlock the rest of your system’s power, don’t you?" Raven asked.

I narrowed my eyes. "How do you know about that?"

"Because that’s how real progression works in the high-tier realms," Raven explained, leaning against the alley wall. "Monster-slaughtering stats are just a tutorial crutch. True Soul Essence is cultivated through Soul Synchronization—building a deeper, spiritual and physical bond with your tethered Calamity entity."

She glanced at Valeska, whose red visor was glowing ominously.

"The deeper your bond with her soul," Raven added, "the more of her ancient power floods into your vessel, permanently expanding your Essence pool."

I looked at Valeska.

Valeska looked down at me through her visor, her armored chest heaving slightly. She didn’t deny Raven’s words.

’So... to reach 3,000 Soul Essence and unlock Lilith... I have to deeply synchronize my soul with Valeska?’

Raven tossed a dark iron token through the air. I caught it.

"That’s a pass to the Guild’s private quarters," Raven said, turning back into the shadows of the alley. "Get a room, clean off the mud, and figure out how to synchronize with your Empress. Because tomorrow, the Imperial Archons arrive in Oakhaven... and they won’t be as easy to beat as those gate guards."

I looked at the iron token in my hand, then looked up at Valeska, who was staring at me with a complex, dangerous crimson glow in her visor.

"Soul Synchronization, huh?" I muttered, letting out a dry laugh. "This is gonna be a very interesting night."
