Chapter 5: Warmth In Darkness

My Desire System: The More They Want Me, The Stronger I Get

Leo pulled the crowbar from the fallen enforcer’s neck, wiping the blade against his sleeve as the dark mist around his knuckles subsided.

The padlock on the holding cages clicked open, and he swung the doors wide to let the captives step onto the chilled floor.

"You are free," he told the huddled group, gesturing toward the shadowed exit. "Head up the stairs and out through the drainage tunnel before the perimeter guards wake."

The young women scrambled from the pens, weeping with relief as they supported each other toward the exit.

"Thank you, mister," one of the captives sobbed, clutching her bruised arm as she hurried past the threshold.

"Move quickly," he said, keeping a watchful eye on the corridor. "The guards are unconscious, but they won’t stay asleep forever."

In the center cage, Luna remained on her knees, cradling her teenage apprentice until the other captives cleared the doorway.

"Go with them, Maya," she whispered, brushing a tear from the young girl’s pale cheek. "Find the night watch on Fourth Street and stay in the light."

The girl nodded and ran after the others, leaving the chilled room quiet except for the low hum of the cooling unit.

Leo lowered his head, staring at the black pool spreading across the frozen floor in silence.

A dull ache pulsed in his right shoulder where the cleaver had torn his jacket and split his skin.

"Sit down," a quiet, musical voice spoke beside him as footsteps crunched over the rime.

Luna knelt in front of him, reaching out to take his hands into her own warm, smooth palms.

"I just took a life," he murmured, his throat dry as the adrenaline drained from his bloodstream.

"You saved our lives," she said, looking into his eyes with quiet relief. "If you hadn’t dropped from those rafters, we would be locked in dissection vats by morning."

She reached up, gently pulling his torn jacket aside to expose the bleeding cut across his collarbone.

"You are bleeding badly from that strike," she whispered with medical concern. "Please let me help you."

She raised her palms, placing them against his wounded shoulder with practiced tenderness.

A radiant aura of green and gold light bloomed from her skin, washing over his torn flesh with soothing heat.

He exhaled as the burning pain dissolved, the torn muscle fibers knitting together beneath his collar in a matter of seconds.

The cut closed without leaving a scar, restoring his stamina until the lingering fatigue vanished from his body.

’Pure vitality ether,’ he thought, marveling at the emerald light swirling gently between their chests.

"How does an Awakened Healer end up working in a District 9 charity clinic?" he asked, watching the sparks dance across her fingertips.

"I grew up in these slums," she whispered, resting her hands neatly in her lap with quiet pride. "Corporate recruiters tried to sign me to an exclusive contract when I manifested my gift, but I refused to become a lab asset."

"Apex Bio-Tech doesn’t take no for an answer," he remarked, glancing toward the fallen enforcer across the floor.

"They certainly don’t," she agreed with a bitter sigh, adjusting the collar of her torn scrubs against the frosty air. "They sent Kincaid to snatch me off the street while I was locking the pharmacy doors after hours."

A sweet floral scent drifted from her hair as she leaned closer, checking his neck and ribs for internal trauma.

Her delicate palms lingered against his chest, her touch tender and fervent against his steady heartbeat.

The All-Spark core inside his chest surged with a wave of rose-gold heat, and the pink status window expanded across his line of vision.

"Thank you for saving my life," she whispered, her cheeks flushing pink under his gaze. "What’s your name?"

"Leo," he answered, offering a slight smile as he helped her stand from the freezing floor.

"I am Luna," she said, smoothing down her scrubs. "I work the emergency shift at the district charity clinic on Seventh Avenue."

"I know the neighborhood," he said, checking the corridor for secondary threats before stepping toward the door. "Let us get you home safely before more enforcers arrive on the scene."

He picked up two discarded medicine satchels from the floor and handed them to her with a nod.

"Take these," he said. "The clinic will need whatever medical supplies we can salvage from this raid."

She clutched the satchels tightly against her chest, her eyes shining with heartfelt gratitude.

They slipped out through the drainage conduit, stepping into the foggy alleyways of District 9 beneath the glow of streetlights.

The morning air was brisk and damp, carrying the familiar scent of chimney smoke and river silt across the pavement.

He walked beside her through the quiet residential blocks, keeping his perception alert for any corporate pursuit.

Early morning laborers were already shuffling toward the tram stops, their breath misting in the grey dawn.

"The clinic was ransacked during the attack," she said, wrapping her arms around herself to ward off the morning chill. "Flint’s men stole all of our antibiotic crates and wrecked the emergency ward."

"Flint controls the docks and the loan sharks," he said, his voice cold and steady in the morning mist. "He believes nobody in District 9 possesses the strength to challenge his authority."

"People are terrified of his enforcers," she murmured, glancing sideways at his calm, focused profile. "Nobody has ever stood up to Kincaid and his crew like that."

"Someone had to protect the clinic," he said simply, watching the shadows for movement.

She smiled, a radiant expression that brightened her bruised cheekbone in the morning light.

"You are very different from the licensed heroes on television," she said, tapping his arm playfully. "They only show up when cameras are rolling, but you walked into the shadows alone to protect strangers."

"Corporate heroes care about sponsor endorsements," he answered. "I care about keeping my family and my neighbors breathing."

They turned down a narrow lane lined with brick tenements, stopping outside a four-story building with yellow curtains in the windows.

"My apartment is on the third floor," she said, lingering near the entrance stoop with a soft look in her eyes. "If you ever get hurt in these streets, come find me at the clinic, Leo."

She pulled a small notepad from her scrub pocket, scribbling a phone number with a pencil stub before pressing the paper into his hand.

"Call me," she added, her cheeks tinting rosy in the morning dawn. "Even if you just want a cup of coffee that doesn’t taste like warehouse floor cleaner."

"I will call you," he promised, watching her unlock the front door and step inside safely.

Across the district, dawn broke over the abandoned meatpacking plant as red police lights reflected against the stagnant canal water.

A luxury hover-car glided into the gravel yard, its silent engine humming with refined corporate power.

A tall director in a charcoal suit and a silver signet ring stepped onto the frost, flanked by two cybernetic bodyguards.

Director Marcus Gruber looked down at Kincaid’s pinned corpse, his unyielding eyes narrowing behind sunglasses.

"Clean puncture through the cervical spine," one of the bodyguards reported, scanning the wound with an optical laser. "Single weapon strike with high force, accompanied by trace residue of shadow ether."

Gruber tapped a transponder at his ear, his voice flat, icy, and devoid of emotion.

"Kincaid failed, but the target was verified," Gruber spoke into the secure corporate frequency. "The nurse carries the untainted life ether strain Apex needs for my son’s gene-repair serum."

"Who eliminated the extraction team?" a distorted voice inquired over the encrypted line.

"An unknown metahuman wielding a crowbar," Gruber replied, stepping back into the heated cabin of the hover-car. "Deploy the strike hounds to locate the vigilante, secure the girl, and purge the district."

The luxury vehicle lifted into the smoggy morning sky, leaving the slaughterhouse behind in dead silence.
