Money had become a constant presence in my life.

It was the kind that sat in the back of your mind every morning and followed you around all day, reminding you about bills, deadlines, and everything you couldn’t afford to ignore.

My salary covered the basics.

Rent, utilities, groceries, transportation.

But just barely.

By the time I paid for everything, there was rarely enough left over to feel comfortable.

Normally, I could manage.

Unfortunately, my life hadn’t been normal lately.

I stared at the figures on my phone during lunch break and sighed.

The amount I owed Damian wasn’t impossible.

It was just inconvenient.

Very inconvenient.

I rubbed my forehead and closed the calculator app.

There had to be a way to earn extra money.

For the past week, I had been searching online for side jobs after work.

Freelance data entry.

Weekend promotions.

Event staffing.

Anything that paid decently.

Most of them either paid too little or required experience I didn’t have.

I was beginning to think I’d need several months to save enough.

“Trust me, the tips alone can be amazing.”

The voice pulled me from my thoughts.

I looked up and saw Sasha sitting across from another coworker in the break room.

She was animated as always, waving her hands while talking.

“The base pay isn’t bad either,” she continued.

“But the real money comes from the customers.

Especially the VIP ones.”

My attention sharpened immediately.

The other coworker looked intrigued.

“What kind of place is it?”

”A high-end bar downtown,” Sasha said proudly.

“The customers spend ridiculous amounts of money.

Some of them leave tips bigger than my weekly salary here.”

I nearly choked on my coffee.

Sasha laughed.

“I’m serious.

Last month one guy tipped me two hundred dollars because I remembered his favorite whiskey.”

”You’re kidding.”

”I’m not.”

The conversation continued, but my mind had already latched onto the important part.

Extra income.

Good extra income.

By the time lunch ended, I was still thinking about it.

The idea stayed with me throughout the afternoon.

It followed me through spreadsheets, emails, and meetings.

By the time I got home, I found myself researching part-time bar work.

The hours would be difficult.

I would be exhausted.

But the money… The money could solve several problems.

I sat on my bed that night staring at the ceiling.

It wouldn’t be permanent, that thought became my anchor.

It would be just temporary.

Long enough to earn what I needed.

Long enough to pay Damian back.

Then I could quit and move on with my life.

The more I considered it, the more reasonable it seemed.

The next morning, I walked into the office with a decision already made.

I spotted Sasha near the printer and immediately headed toward her.

“Hey.”

She turned and smiled.

“Morning.”

”Can I ask you something?”

”Sure.”

I hesitated briefly.

Then I said, “That bar job you mentioned yesterday.

Are they hiring?”

Her eyes widened.

“Wait.

You’re interested?”

”I might be.”

”Might be?” she repeated dramatically.

“Elara, that’s great.”

I laughed.

“I haven’t agreed yet.”

”You should.”

Sasha grabbed my arm and pulled me toward an empty conference room.

The excitement on her face made me nervous.

Once inside, she shut the door and turned to me.

“Okay.

Tell me everything.”

”There isn’t much to tell.”

”There has to be a reason.”

I considered lying.

Instead, I shrugged.

“I need extra money.”

Sasha immediately nodded.

“Say no more.

Honestly, that’s why most people start.”

”Is it really worth it?”

”It absolutely is.” She sat down and leaned forward.

“The work can be tiring because the nights are long.

You’ll be on your feet a lot.”

I could handle that.

“But?”

”But the money makes up for it.”

That got my attention.

“How much are we talking about?”

”It depends on the night.” Sasha smiled knowingly.

“But the VIP customers are where the real money is.”

I remembered hearing that yesterday.

“What makes them different?”

”They spend like money doesn’t exist.”

I laughed.

“That sounds exaggerated.”

”I’m serious.”

She pointed a finger at me.

“These people order expensive bottles without checking the price.

They reserve private tables.

They bring clients, friends, dates.”

”That sounds intimidating.”

”It sounds profitable,” she said.

Fair point.

Sasha continued enthusiastically.

“If you’re friendly and professional, they’ll remember you.

Some customers are incredibly generous.”

”Generous how?”

She grinned.

“I once made more in one weekend than I did in two weeks at this office.”

My eyebrows shot up.

“Seriously?”

”Seriously.”

That number alone was enough to make my heart race.

Maybe this really could work.

Maybe I wouldn’t have to spend months worrying about money.

Sasha must have noticed my interest growing because she smiled triumphantly.

“I knew you’d like the idea.”

I laughed despite myself.

She wasn’t entirely wrong.

She squeezed my hands.

“I’ll introduce you to the manager.”

My eyes widened in surprise.

“That easy?”

She nodded.

“That easy.”

I pressed my lips together.

“What if I mess up?”

”Elara, you wouldn’t,” she said and crossed her arms.

“You’re polite.

You’re responsible.

You remember details.

Customers love people who make them feel important.”

”I’ve never worked in a bar before.”

”Neither had I when I started.”

Her confidence was strangely reassuring.

The entire conversation felt surprisingly easy.

Comforting, even.

Sasha had always been friendly, and I trusted her.

She wasn’t the type to trick people or push them into bad situations.

If she said the job was worthwhile, I believed her.

“Okay,” I said finally.

“I’ll do it.”

Her eyes lit up.

“I’ll be there with you,” she said reassuringly.

“If you’re nervous, just call me, and I’ll be there.”

I smiled.

“Thank you.

I know I can count on you.”

Sasha clapped her hands together.

“You’re going to love it.”

I wasn’t sure about that.

But as I thought about the overdue bills, the money I owed Damian, and the constant anxiety hanging over my head, I knew one thing.

I needed this opportunity.
