Episode 12 — Eyes of the Dragon and Vampire
The unfamiliar energy Drako had sensed the night before stayed on his mind even after he returned to his room. It had appeared for only a second, but it felt different from everything around Astra Academy. It wasn’t human, Phoenix, Draconic, or Vampiric. More importantly, the System itself hadn’t recognized it. Drako sat on his bed with one golden eye and one crimson eye, trying to recreate the state he had reached during training. [Second Hybrid Technique Completion: 12%.] He activated Blood Sense first. Heartbeats appeared throughout the dormitory. Students sleeping. Guards patrolling outside. Small animals moving through the grass. Then he slowly activated Dragon Sense. Energy signatures appeared around those heartbeats, and immediately pressure built behind his eyes. “Easy.” Drako controlled his breathing. Instead of forcing the abilities together, he allowed each one to perform its own purpose. Blood Sense tracked life. Dragon Sense tracked supernatural energy. Slowly, the two streams of information stopped interfering with each other. [Hybrid compatibility increasing.] [Completion: 14%.] Drako smiled. “Two percent.” He pushed slightly harder. Suddenly, he could see something new. Every heartbeat seemed surrounded by an energy pattern. Some were weak. Others were stronger. When an instructor passed outside, Drako could immediately tell that his energy was several times greater than the students around him. “So I can judge strength?” [Approximate energy assessment possible. Accuracy increases with mastery.] Drako stood. This ability could become incredibly useful. An enemy might hide their power from normal senses, but if Drako learned to read both their blood and energy simultaneously, hiding from him would become much harder.
The next morning, Drako met Adrian, Mira, and Raizen outside the combat building. Adrian looked exhausted. “Did you sleep?” Drako asked. “Did you?” Adrian replied. “Fair.” Mira shook her head. “Both of you are going to collapse before the tournament.” Raizen was staring at Drako’s eyes. “They’re different.” Drako quickly returned them to normal. “I’ve been practicing.” “Clearly.” Before Drako could ask what Raizen had noticed, the training arena doors opened. Their instructor stood inside beside a large holographic board. “Tournament qualifiers begin in nineteen days. Starting today, every student interested in participating will receive an official combat ranking.” Excitement spread through the room. Hundreds of names appeared across the board. Kaien stood near the top. Drako found his own name much farther down. “Rank 183?” Adrian laughed. “You’re famous and still ranked one hundred eighty-three.” Drako smiled. “Good.” Mira looked confused. “Good?” “More people to pass.” The instructor explained that rankings weren’t based only on level. Combat performance, teamwork, control, victories, and strategic ability were all included. Students could challenge people above them, but only a limited number of official matches would count each week. To qualify for the tournament, they needed to finish among the academy’s selected representatives.
Drako received his first challenge before lunch. A Level 3 student named Varek approached him in the courtyard. “You’re Drako?” “Yeah.” “Rank 183.” Drako looked at the ranking badge on Varek’s uniform. “Rank 146.” Varek smiled. “Exactly. Everyone keeps talking about you. I want to see why.” An official match was arranged that afternoon. Students gathered around the arena, including Kaien, who watched from the upper seats. Varek entered carrying two short metal staffs. Electricity moved between them. Drako entered without a weapon. The referee raised his hand. “Begin!” Varek attacked immediately. Electricity exploded across the floor. Drako activated Blood Step and moved aside. Varek anticipated it. One staff swung toward the place where Drako reappeared. Drako barely activated Dragon Scales in time. CRACK! Electricity spread across his scaled arm. Pain traveled through his shoulder. Drako jumped backward. Varek smiled. “I’ve watched your fights. You disappear, then attack with strength.” Drako rubbed his arm. “So you’ve figured me out?” “Pretty much.” Drako smiled. “That’s a problem.” “For you.” “No. For me. Means I’m becoming predictable.”
Varek attacked again. This time Drako didn’t use Blood Step. He activated Blood Enhancement and moved normally, avoiding the first staff. Blood Sense detected Varek’s heartbeat accelerating before his second attack. Drako ducked. Dragon Sense detected electricity gathering inside the other weapon. Instead of blocking, Drako moved away before the discharge came. Varek’s expression changed. Drako realized his developing hybrid perception was already helping him. Blood Sense showed what Varek’s body intended to do. Dragon Sense showed where his energy was moving. Together, they gave Drako two different warnings. Varek increased his speed. Electricity surrounded both weapons. Drako’s left eye briefly turned crimson while his right became gold. The world sharpened. Heartbeat. Muscular movement. Energy flow. Weapon charge. Direction. Drako could almost see the attack before it happened. [Hybrid completion: 21%.] Varek swung. Drako stepped inside the attack instead of retreating. Dragon Scales appeared across his shoulder as one staff scraped against him. Blood Enhancement accelerated his body. Drako grabbed Varek’s wrist but didn’t attack immediately. Varek expected Dragon Strength and pulled his defense inward. Crimson energy gathered around Drako’s legs. Blood Step. He vanished while still holding Varek’s wrist for a fraction of a second, disrupting his balance. Drako appeared behind him and used a controlled Dragon Strength strike against his back. BOOM! Varek rolled across the arena.

Varek stood again, breathing heavily. “You changed your pattern.” Drako nodded. “That’s the point.” Varek slammed both staffs together. Electricity exploded around his body. “Then read this!” He charged. Drako’s hybrid senses immediately detected multiple energy pathways. Too many. Blocking would be dangerous. Blood Step could move him away, but Drako wanted to test something else. He activated his Blood-Scaled Form partially. Golden scales spread across his chest and arms while his eyes changed. His muscles became denser. His fangs sharpened slightly, but he kept the rest of his body human. The transformation still hurt, though much less than before. Varek attacked. Drako used Blood Step. Crimson energy accelerated him. Before reappearing, he pulled that energy through his arm while Dragon Strength awakened. Golden and crimson power twisted together. “Dragon Blood Strike.” Drako appeared directly in front of Varek. His fist stopped inches from Varek’s chest. The pressure alone pushed Varek backward. The referee immediately stepped between them. “Enough!” Silence filled the arena. Drako lowered his fist. He could have landed the attack, but at their current strength difference, he didn’t know how badly it would hurt Varek. The referee looked at both fighters. “Winner: Drako.” The crowd erupted. [Official victory recorded.] [Ranking updated: 183 → 149.] Drako frowned. “Only 149?” Adrian shouted from the stands, “You didn’t beat enough people yet!” Drako laughed.
Kaien was waiting outside the arena. “You stopped your final attack.” Drako nodded. “It was over.” Kaien’s expression became serious. “That’s good.” Drako looked surprised. “I thought you’d tell me I was soft.” “There’s a difference between fighting and hurting someone who can’t defend themselves.” Kaien turned away. “Don’t confuse strength with stupidity.” Drako watched him leave. His rival was more disciplined than he first appeared. That made Drako want to fight him even more.
Later, Adrian showed Drako another recording from the ruins. “Remember that unknown frequency?” A holographic pattern appeared. “I found another reference.” Drako leaned closer. “Where?” “A corrupted historical file. Most of it was deleted, but one word survived.” Adrian enlarged the damaged text. The letters flickered. AZUNAKKII. Drako stared at the word. “What does it mean?” “I don’t know.” Adrian lowered his voice. “But someone went through a lot of trouble to erase it.” Mira entered unexpectedly. The moment she saw the word, her face changed. Drako noticed immediately. “You’ve seen it before.” Mira remained silent. Raizen entered behind her and saw the projection. His hand tightened around his sword. Adrian looked between them. “Okay. Apparently I’m the only person who doesn’t know anything.” Mira finally spoke. “My family used to tell stories about an old war. They called the enemy something similar.” Drako’s expression hardened. “Enemy?” Mira nodded. “Beings that didn’t come from our world.” Nobody spoke for several seconds. Drako remembered the foreign energy he had sensed beyond Astra Academy. “Another world?” “Maybe more than that,” Mira answered. “The stories said they came from somewhere humanity couldn’t normally reach.”
That evening, Drako returned to training with even more questions. The tournament suddenly felt small compared with what Adrian had discovered, but Drako knew he wasn’t ready for universe-level enemies. He needed to focus on what was directly ahead. He activated Blood Sense and Dragon Sense together. Golden and crimson filled his eyes. This time the pain was manageable. [Hybrid Technique Completion: 31%.] Drako continued concentrating until the two senses synchronized completely for several seconds. [New Hybrid Technique unlocked.] [Dragon Blood Vision.] [Ability: Combines Draconic energy perception with Vampiric life detection, allowing Host to analyze movement, energy circulation, bloodline traces, and weaknesses.] Drako smiled. “Dragon Blood Vision.” His second hybrid technique wasn’t an attack. It was something potentially more dangerous: the ability to understand his opponent. He returned his eyes to normal at will. Nineteen days remained before the qualifiers. Somewhere in humanity’s forgotten history was the name Azunakkii, and somewhere beyond Drako’s world, something unfamiliar had briefly touched his senses. But Drako wasn’t going to rush toward a war he wasn’t prepared to fight. First came the tournament. First came his friends. First came mastering his own body. He clenched his fist as golden and crimson energy intertwined around it. One ability at a time, one evolution at a time, Drako was becoming harder to predict.
