Ryder’s POV”Why didn’t you tell me that you went back to work at the company, sweetheart?
Do you have any idea how that felt when I found out from someone else?”
”I didn’t realize I needed your permission.” She turned to face me fully now, chin lifted, nothing soft in her expression at all.
“I don’t report my schedule to you, Ryder. My work is my business.”
Something in my chest went tight and hot.
“Your business.” I let out a breath that wasn’t quite a laugh.
“After everything, that’s still what I am to you?
Someone you don’t owe an explanation to?”
”I never asked you to be anything else.”
I leaned forward, closing the distance between us until her back met the wall.
She looked up at me startled, lips parting like she wanted to argue, and I didn’t let her.
“You don’t get to say that.” My voice came out rough, lower than I meant it to.
“Ryder—”
”You came to me first!” I could hear how hoarse I sounded, how little control I had over my anger now.
“And now you don’t get to just walk away like none of it happened. Not this lifetime. I won’t let you go.”
She kept quiet, our eyes locking for a while.
I couldn’t bear listening to another hurtful word from her.
My breathing was unsteady as I kissed her, stealing her breath in a completely different way.

She looked up, startled.
