"Our greatest glory is not in never falling, but in rising every time we fall." — Confucius
The sun beat down ruthlessly on the grand courtyard of the Imperial Academy.
Yet hundreds of students stood in perfectly aligned rows, and the intense heat could do nothing to suppress the nervous excitement buzzing in the air.
Because it was not just any random day at the academy.
Today was the Awakening Ceremony. That single day of the year which decided the trajectory of their entire lives.
In this world, it did not matter whose son you were, or how rich your father was.
All that mattered was how strong you were. It was the only thing that mattered.
And this Awakening Ceremony was being orchestrated to awaken the elemental essence dormant within the students.
But like life, not all were equal.
The Awakening did not make all men equal; it merely opened the door.
Once awakened, a person’s entire future was dictated by two distinct metrics: their Affinity Rank and their Mana Core Stage.
Affinity Rank determined a person’s absolute potential and the purity of their element. It scaled from the abysmal F-Rank, the lowest dregs of the magical hierarchy, to the legendary, continent-shattering S-Rank.
However, towering potential was utterly useless without the fuel to sustain it. That was where the Mana Core came in.
The Core dictated a person’s raw magical output and capacity. Every awakened began at the Iron Stage, the lowest foundation of magic, and had to painstakingly cultivate their core through Bronze, Silver, Gold, and beyond.
In this ruthless world, a high elemental grade meant better potential and faster growth, but without a developed core to back it up, it was of no use.
A young prodigy boasting an S-Rank Earth affinity but still at the foundational Iron Stage was still just an insect waiting to be crushed by a veteran with a mediocre C-Rank affinity but a highly refined Silver Stage Core.
In a true fight, the veteran’s overwhelming reservoir of raw mana and decades of combat experience would always obliterate the prodigy’s unrefined potential.
But magic was only half the equation in the struggle for supremacy. The world was shared by a myriad of races, each endowed from birth with distinct biological advantages that could easily tip the scales of power.
Elves boasted naturally long lives and massive mana reserves.
Beastmen possessed hyper-enhanced senses and lethal physical raw power.
Meanwhile the humans reproduced like rabbits, overwhelming the world with their sheer numbers.
And then there were the vampires. Their inherent biological advantages were raw, terrifying physical power, long lives, and mana reserves.
Even when unawakened, a pureblood vampire possessed the physical strength and durability of a Iron Stage human. They could shatter boulders and tear a normal man limb from limb.
But in the eyes of the high nobles, biological traits were secondary.
Physical strength was considered a trait for mindless beasts and manual laborers. Control over mana was the true tool of rulers.
And for that very reason, nobles and commoners wishing to become nobles were gathered in the courtyard of the Imperial Academy of the Kingdom of Valoris.
And right now, even in this most awaited once-in-a-year ceremony, all eyes were on the star of the Imperial Academy.
Adrian Ravencrest walked up the massive stone steps toward the centre of the courtyard. He was eighteen years old this year, tall, broad-shouldered, and the second son of Duke Maximus Ravencrest, the most feared and ruthless vampire lord in the kingdom.
Whispers broke out in the crowd as he slowly approached the pedestal.
Everyone expected greatness.
After all, the Ravencrest bloodline only produced monsters.
Adrian stopped in front of the Awakening Stone. It was a massive, round gemstone that stood over ten feet tall.
It was supposed to glow brightly the second he touched it and project his elemental affinity and his core grade into the sky for all to see.
A flicker of nervous energy twisted in Adrian’s gut. He turned his head, glancing up at the towering VIP balcony where his father sat.
Duke Maximus had a stern, uncompromising look on his face, but as their eyes met, the imposing vampire lord simply gave a single, firm nod.
Taking a slow breath, Adrian turned his attention back to the towering monolith.
Stepping out from the shadow of the massive gem was an elderly professor.
The frail, white-haired man was swallowed by heavy ceremonial robes, deep midnight-blue velvet that cascaded to the floor, embroidered with glowing silver runes and gold trim.
Yet, despite his esteemed rank, the old man practically shrank under the weight of Adrian’s presence.
He bowed far lower than his hunched back demanded, his wrinkled face twisting into a strained smile.
"An absolute honor, Young Master Ravencrest," the professor murmured, rubbing his hands eagerly. "The Academy expects monumental things from your illustrious house today."
"If you please... whenever you are ready. Simply place your palm flat against the center of the Awakening Stone. No rush"
Turning his attention back toward the stone, Adrian placed his bare hand firmly against the smooth surface. He tried channelling his internal energy through the stone.
Everyone stared at the stone with their breaths held, not moving an inch.
But as they continued to wait, the seconds stretching into an agonizing silence, nothing happened. The quiet began to fracture.
"Is the stone not activated?" a boy in the second row muttered to his friend.
"Maybe it takes longer for S-Ranks," a girl whispered back.
"Or maybe the monster’s bloodline finally ran dry," another student scoffed softly.
Up in the towering VIP balcony, Duke Maximus leaned forward. The heavy wooden armrest of his chair groaned under his iron grip. His crimson eyes narrowed into a glare at the unexpected delay.
The elderly professor anxiously dabbed sweat from his wrinkled forehead.
"Just... relax, Young Master," he urged softly, his voice trembling. "Let the energy flow naturally. Do not force it."
But nothing happened, and the crystal didn’t glow.
The stone flickered dimly, like a dying candle. Hope reignited in everyone’s heart for a second before a loud, sharp crack echoed across the dead-silent courtyard.
A massive fissure shot up the centre of the giant gemstone.
Snap.
Crack.
More fractures spidered outward from the main fissure, crawling across the polished surface with every sickening sound.
In the courtyard below, hundreds of people collectively sucked in their breath, their lungs burning as they froze in terrified silence to watch the impossible unfold.
A second later, the crystal shattered entirely, raining dull, grey shards across the stone platform.
The academy proctor, an old mage in heavy robes, stared in absolute shock.
’Wha...?!’
The Awakening Crystal was an ancient, and reinforced artifact. It did not simply break.
A cold spike of panic seized the old man’s chest.
How was he supposed to explain the destruction of a priceless royal relic to the headmaster?
He had no idea what had just happened or what had caused it.
But he could not let all those present in the courtyard know this. He was in charge of the Awakening Ceremony. He had to take control of the situation.
Forcing his trembling hands to steady, he quickly masked his terror behind a veil of calculated authority.
"Ahem!" He tapped his staff, sweating profusely but keeping his face completely stoic.
He looked at the readings in the stone he was holding, then looked at Adrian with a mix of pity and disgust.
"Adrian Ravencrest," the proctor announced. He used wind magic to amplify his voice so it boomed over the crowd.
"Unawakened. Tier Nil."
"No elemental affinity."
There was a moment of heavy, suffocating silence.
Then the whispering started, as a wave of profound, unsettling confusion spread through everyone’s head.
"Did that stone just break?"
"How is it a bad thing?"
"But the proctor said he is not awakened?"
"A Ravencrest without magic?"
"Could the rumours be true?" One of them whispered as if remembering something, "Could Adrian really be the illegitimate son of the Duke?"
"Maybe he isn’t even his illegitimate son. He could be just an adopted son."
"But why would the Duke adopt a trash?"
The collective murmurs swelled, as hundreds of quiet voices merged into a loud buzz that echoed across the courtyard.
The second son of the great Duke Ravencrest was trash? That was impossible.
Meanwhile Adrian stood perfectly still on the platform. His face was completely blank, but his mind was racing in sheer panic.
’What just happened?’ he thought, staring at the small shards near his boots.
’It broke. Why did it break? And why didn’t I awaken?’
His internal energy had been there... He had felt it drain into the stone. So how did it yield nothing? Why was he unawakened?
A suffocating dread settled in his chest as his thoughts instantly drifted to the VIP balcony, thinking about his father.
’What will he do? Exile me? Kill me?’
He knew he had no power, and House Ravencrest would never tolerate a failure.
But while he was worried about his father, another mess awaited him.
"Adrian!" a sharp, highly irritated voice called out over the whispers.
