Jiang Chiyu didn’t linger at the Pei residence after finishing her meal. Instead, she had Chen Mo drive her to Hengchuang.
Although she had been forced into the position, she was now the owner of Hengchuang, for better or worse. She couldn’t just dump all the work on others.
However, once she actually arrived at Hengchuang, she realized she had been far too optimistic. There was no such thing as a peaceful world; it was simply that someone else was carrying the burden for her.
Looking at the thick stack of documents piled on her desk, Jiang Chiyu’s head began to throb. Rubbing her temples, she asked, “Do I really need to go through all of these?”
The young man standing before her nodded. “This is the recent procurement list from the Purchasing Department. It requires your review and signature.”
Before she could even respond, there was another knock on her office door. Hearing the sound, Jiang Chiyu’s pulse quickened with a sense of impending doom.
“Come in,” she called out, forcing herself to rally some energy.
The person at the door didn’t hesitate and stepped inside immediately. “Hello, President Jiang. I am the Director of Global Entertainment, a subsidiary of Hengchuang. We are holding our tenth-anniversary celebration tonight and would like to invite you to attend. We hope you can make it.”
The newcomer was a striking woman with a bold appearance, wearing a black uniform. She was tall, with simple yet elegant makeup. After speaking, she left an invitation on Jiang Chiyu’s desk, which included the specific location of the gala.
Thinking that this was surely better than staying here to do paperwork, Jiang Chiyu agreed immediately. “Alright, I’ll be there tonight.”
“Then I’ll take my leave and stop disturbing you, President Jiang.” The woman gave a respectful, polite smile and walked out slowly in her high heels.
Being called “President Jiang” sent a thrill of satisfaction through her. Jiang Chiyu raised an eyebrow and looked at the young man with a delighted expression. “You can head out too. I’ll have Chen Mo send these over to you once I’m done signing.”
Since she had put it that way, the young man had no choice but to nod and withdraw.
But the moment he left and her gaze fell back onto the mountain of paperwork, Jiang Chiyu’s excitement withered. “The CEO characters in novels never seem to have this much trouble. Why am I being slammed with so much work the moment I take office?”
Complaining aside, she still pulled a file from the stack and began reading. Fortunately, the actual vital information in these documents wasn’t excessive; it was mostly data and the total costs for various procurements.
The file in her hand listed a total expenditure in the eight-figure range, but the items were all genuinely necessary. Jiang Chiyu pulled a black pen from the holder and, with a wince, signed her name.
It really hurt—every signature felt like a million dollars was evaporating.
Before she could reach for the second file, there was yet another knock. Jiang Chiyu felt like she couldn’t take much more of this. “Come in!”
She expected another NPC delivering more tasks, but it was Chen Mo, who had been away on business for a while.
Relieved to see him, Jiang Chiyu was about to speak when Chen Mo beat her to it. “Miss Jiang, the young master has landed and is on his way back. He doesn’t know you’re at the office, so he went to the Pei residence. I expect he’ll track you down here within the hour.”
His long explanation boiled down to one thing: You’re about to be in trouble; the little demon is back.
Hearing this, Jiang Chiyu slapped a document over her face and leaned back in her chair. “Let him come. It’s not like he can beat me to death, right?”
She decided to embrace a policy of total resignation.
However, Jiang Chiyu waited until evening, and the so-called “little demon” never showed up to cause trouble. By then, it was time for her to get off work.
Since entering Hengchuang, she hadn’t rested once. She hadn’t even taken a bathroom break, throwing herself entirely into the work.
When she encountered things she didn’t understand, she shamelessly asked Chen Mo. If Chen Mo didn’t know, she summoned the project managers directly, making them explain to her face why they were doing things a certain way and what Hengchuang stood to gain.
Though the project managers were shocked, they answered her questions honestly.
The afternoon passed productively. Now, she had the Global Entertainment tenth-anniversary gala to attend. Since it was a celebration, surely she could relax for a bit?
“Has Lin Wu reached out yet?” Jiang Chiyu asked suddenly as she sat in the car, watching the scenery flash by the window.
Chen Mo, who was driving, nodded. “No, he hasn’t come forward yet, nor has he contacted Pei Su’s side.”
Hearing that name again, Jiang Chiyu remembered what Chen Mo had said a few days ago about Pei Su’s liquidity problems. After a moment of silence, she asked, “You mentioned before that Pei Su was having cash flow issues. What exactly is the problem?”
She hadn’t been paying attention to him, so she was completely in the dark.
Chen Mo didn’t even bother to roll his eyes, playing along with her feigned ignorance. “A year ago, Pei Su spent a fortune poaching an artist from a rival company. Now, that artist is in trouble. All of the artist’s endorsements are at risk of termination. I estimate the liquidation damages he’ll have to pay the brands will be at least fifty to sixty million, conservatively speaking.”
One had to realize that the person in trouble was a top-tier superstar. When an artist of that caliber has a scandal, brands will immediately terminate their contracts to protect themselves.
Because the endorsement fees for such artists are incredibly high, the corresponding penalties for breaching the contract during the endorsement period are astronomical.
“Something involving the entertainment industry?” Realizing she was on her way to an entertainment company gala, Jiang Chiyu asked out of curiosity, “Which artist?”
The moment the question left her mouth, she realized how stupid it sounded. If the liquidation damages were that high, how could it be a minor celebrity?
When an artist of that level messes up, it blows up the entire internet. If she were even remotely online, she wouldn’t have to ask.
Sensing that Chen Mo was probably speechless, Jiang Chiyu held up a hand. “Just focus on driving. I’ll look it up myself.”
“…Alright.”
It wasn’t that Jiang Chiyu was disconnected from the world; she just hadn’t felt like going online the past few days. She had been too busy thinking about her hundred-billion-dollar inheritance or the heavy burdens she was about to face.
But when she opened Weibo for the first time in a while and saw the top trending topic, she froze in surprise. Clicking on it, she was even more shocked.
