"Hold emergency control!" shouts the pilot, his voice drowned out among the wails of the navigation system siren that’s dead.
Electromagnetic wave turbulence from the ocean’s direction disables all the helicopter’s instruments. The rotor blades, unbalanced, whip the fierce sea wind, tossing the metal body into a steep dive.
"Ethan!" Olivia screams hysterically. Despite her body being weak and pale from blood loss and transfusions, she twists her trembling body, resigned as she braces her chest against her child.
Daniel clings tightly to the stretcher holding Alexander, who’s barely hanging on. "Hold on!"
Olivia chokes on salty water. Her body is tossed around in the helicopter’s cabin, which is rapidly sinking toward the ocean floor. The pain from bleeding heavily blurs her vision, but her fingers refuse to release Ethan’s clothes.
"Olivia! Take this life vest!" The splash of water nears. Daniel surfaces from the rising water inside the cabin, pushing a rescue board toward Olivia’s chest.
With her remaining strength almost gone, Olivia straps Ethan into the life jacket. "Get Ethan out first, Daniel!"
"Not without you two!" Daniel shouts as he cuts the submerged rope of Alexander’s stretcher.
"Olivia!" Alexander’s hoarse voice dominates the roaring waves at night. He swims against the current, grabbing Olivia’s waist just as the helicopter is fully pulled into the dark ocean depths.
They float amid the wild Atlantic waves. Local rain pelts their pale faces. On the emergency rubber boat that automatically inflates, Daniel pulls Ethan first, then Olivia, who’s nearly unconscious, and finally helps Alexander climb aboard.
"Keep your eyes open, Olivia," Alexander whispers, trembling as he cups the pale face of the woman with his trembling hands. "I’m here. Don’t dare close your eyes."
Olivia gazes into his silver eyes with a sad look. Her lips, blue as they are, form a faint smile. "You’re alive, Alex."
"Because your blood runs through me," Alexander replies with a trembling, emotional tone. He kisses Olivia’s wet forehead, holding her tightly against the ocean wind.
"Alex, look ahead!" Daniel shouts, pointing toward the thick fog on the western horizon.
About two miles away, a silhouette of a majestic five-story cruise ship cuts through the dark night. Its spotlight beams radiate from the upper deck, reflecting golden glows on the dark surface of the sea.
"The Sovereign," Alexander whispers, his jaw tightening, erasing all pain from his chest. "That’s a ship owned by an international black-market syndicate controlled by Victoria Ashford."
"Julian’s inside," Daniel adds, checking the emergency radio in a waterproof bag. "The patented toxin signal Ethan transmits is coming from the lower deck. They’re holding a closed auction to sell the toxin formula to global syndicate reps."
Olivia tries to sit up, clinging to Alexander’s sleeve. "Are they going to mass-produce that toxin?"
"They want to turn it into a biological weapon," Alexander responds coldly. "And Ethan is listed as the primary test subject in the patent documents. If the auction ends, Ethan will be hunted worldwide until he’s dead."
Olivia’s greatest fear grips her chest again. She hugs Ethan, who shivers under a thermal blanket. "We have to stop them, Alex. We can’t let them sell our kid’s name!"
"We’re not just going to stop them," Alexander whispers, aiming a fierce, piercing stare at the increasingly approaching ship below the fog. "Tonight, I will tear down the entire underworld empire Julian and Victoria built on your suffering."
Daniel operates a small device behind the rubber boat. It hums softly, slicing through the Atlantic waves toward the shadowy hull of the giant ship without detection by the main radar.
They dock right beneath the ship’s stern escape platform. Alexander jumps first, pulling the anchor, then helps Daniel move Ethan and Olivia into the warm, dimly lit technical corridor of the ship.
"Daniel, secure Olivia and Ethan inside the engine control room," Alexander commands, grabbing a silencer and a tactical rifle from the fallen security guard’s rack.
"You can’t face them alone like this, Alex!" Olivia interjects, holding his arm.
Alexander looks directly into her eyes, brushing his fingers across the seawater on her cheek.
"Five years ago, I failed to protect you at that hotel," he whispers, his voice full of unwavering certainty. "Tonight, I’m going to fix all this chaos so you and Ethan can live without hiding anymore."
Before Olivia can reply, Alexander turns and quickly ascends the steel stairs toward the main auction hall on the third floor.
The auction hall of The Sovereign is built grandly, with thick glass walls revealing the raging Atlantic outside.
"Esteemed guests," Julian’s voice echoes through the speakers, over the clinking of glasses among VIPs. "The molecule you see here isn’t just any toxin. It’s the key to the power map of the world’s medical scene. Whoever controls this patent controls life and death of world leaders."
"The starting bid is five hundred million euros!" Victoria shouts, raising a wooden auction hammer.
"One billion euros!" a middle-aged man from the Middle Eastern consortium shouts.
"Two billion euros!" a representative from Eastern Europe’s syndicate responds.
Julian smiles smugly, his eyes gleaming with madness as victory seems within reach. "Two billion euros! Is there any higher bid for this patent?"
Suddenly, the massive double jati doors burst open. Alexander Rington strides in through clouds of tear gas. His gun fires precise shots, disabling four of Julian’s personal guards on stage before they can draw their guns.
The auction guests scatter in panic toward the back exit, leaving only Julian, Victoria, and Alexander on the stage.
Victoria screams in terror, backing into the thick glass facing the Atlantic. "How are you alive, Alexander?!"
"Impressive, little brother," Julian laughs loudly, pulling out an automatic pistol from his coat and aiming it directly at Alexander’s chest. "You crawled out of the ocean’s depths just to die at my hands again?"
"You’ve never fought like a Rington, Julian," Alexander responds coldly, stopping three meters from the stage. "You’re just a coward hiding behind your mother’s name and her poison."
"Shut your mouth!" Julian snaps, eyes wide with hatred. "I should be in charge of this empire! I deserve everything! You stole my life that night in that hotel room!"
"And why?!" Julian screams hysterically. "This world belongs to those who dare to destroy anyone! And tonight, I will wipe you out!"
Julian screams in pain, clutching his bleeding hand. Panicked Victoria tries to seize the toxin patent from the table, but Alexander leaps onto the stage in a flash, grabbing Victoria’s neck and slamming her onto the glass table, shattering it into pieces.
"NO!" Victoria screams hysterically, watching the billion-euro liquid splatter and vanish.
Julian, crazed with defeat, charges at Alexander with a combat knife pulled from his shoe. The brothers wrestle fiercely on the slippery stage, glass shards scattered around. Julian stabs toward Alexander’s neck, but Alexander blocks his wrist with all his remaining strength.
"You’re finished, Julian!" Alexander snarls, spinning and punching him squarely in the scarred jaw.
Julian crashes into the thick glass behind the stage. Micro-cracks spread across the surface, threatening to shatter under the Atlantic’s pressure.
At the same time, Olivia rushes into the auction hall, hugging Ethan. "Alex!"
Julian, desperate, sees Olivia and Ethan. A wild smile returns to his bloodied face. Ignoring his own safety, he pulls a dead-man’s trigger on the emergency bomb embedded in the main navigation console.
"Alexander!" Olivia screams, clutching the main pillar as water rushes in.
Alexander rushes through the raging water, wrapping Olivia and Ethan in a protective hug while gripping an iron anchor embedded in the wall. The magnificent cruise ship begins sinking rapidly toward the ocean’s bottom.
Amidst the rising tide of seawater flooding the hall, Daniel manages to lower a sealed emergency life raft from the ceiling.
"Get in the raft! Quickly!" Daniel shouts, holding the steel door shut.
Alexander pushes Olivia and Ethan inside the airtight raft. As he tries to climb in, a jagged piece of falling stage structure slices his leg, trapping his ankle under the sinking hull’s steel clamp.
"Alex!" Olivia screams, grabbing Alexander’s hand through the open door. "Get in, Alex! Don’t let go of my hand!"
"The tether will break if the ship sinks completely, Olivia!" Alexander yells over the roar of the rising sea. "You have to cut the cord from inside now!"
"NO! I won’t leave you again!" Olivia sobs, clutching Alexander’s blood-stained hand with all her might. "We have to get out together!"
"Take care of Ethan..." Alexander whispers, his silver eyes gazing at Olivia with the deepest love and calmness he’s ever known. "You’re the best thing that’s ever happened to me, Olivia."
"Alexander!" Olivia’s scream is drowned as the raft plunges into the ocean’s surface.
The morning sun shines warmly over St. Katharine Harbor, London. The harbor is peaceful, only disturbed by the seagulls’ cries and the clinking of ship chains.
Olivia Carter stands at the wooden dock, wearing a long black coat. Her hand grips little Ethan’s fingers as they look out over the calm sea. The entire conspiracy of the Rington and Carter families has been exposed in the media. Richard Carter and Eleanora Rington are behind bars for international crimes, while all Rington Group assets are frozen under an independent trustee.
"Mommy..." Ethan whispers softly, looking up at his mother. "Will Papa Alex come back?"
Tears gather in Olivia’s eyes, but she forces a warm, sincere smile for her son. "Papa Alex is always with us, sweetheart, inside here." Olivia touches her left chest.
Daniel approaches from behind, handing her a thick black envelope stamped with a secret Geneva agency seal.
"The will and asset transfer documents for Rington Group have been officially signed this morning, Miss Carter," Daniel says softly, voice rough but respectful. "All of Alexander Rington’s wealth, worth fifty billion pounds, is now officially yours and Ethan’s."
Olivia looks at the envelope without interest. "I never wanted this money, Daniel."
"I know," Daniel replies quietly. "But Alex wanted to make sure no one in this world could threaten or hurt you two again."
Olivia takes the envelope, running her fingers over the paper with longing that tears her apart. She gazes out over the open sea, imagining the face with piercing silver eyes that always protected her from darkness.
Suddenly, her phone in her coat pocket vibrates softly. An anomalous message arrives from an unregistered number.
Olivia pulls out her phone, swiping to turn it on.
A short message appears on the screen, clear and anonymous:
"Open locker 304 at Victoria Station, London. There’s a promise from five years ago that I never fulfilled."
