Arthur didn’t return to the manor.
Instead, he walked much deeper into the subterranean forest. He walked until the shimmering lake was entirely out of sight. He walked until he could no longer hear the distant, comforting sounds of the estate above. He kept going until he was surrounded by nothing but ancient, towering trees and deep shadows.
Then, he stopped in the center of an overgrown clearing.
The sun was almost entirely gone now. Above the valley, the sky would be bleeding into shades of violent orange, deep red, and bruised purple.
His chest tightened painfully.
There it was.
The curse.
Faint wisps of violet energy slowly began to manifest beneath his skin, crawling up his forearms like dark veins.
Arthur closed his eyes. He could feel it spreading through his internal pathways. It wasn’t violent. Not yet. It was just waking up. Testing the boundaries.
Waiting.
Arthur took a deep, centering breath. "All right," he whispered to the empty clearing. "This time, I’m watching."
The sun finally set.
The violet aura instantly flared, spreading rapidly across his entire body like dark fire.
Arthur’s breathing immediately became heavy and ragged. His heartbeat accelerated into a frantic, violent rhythm. His senses sharpened to terrifying extremes. Every snapping twig sounded like a gunshot. The smell of damp earth and pine became overpowering. The shadows around the clearing didn’t look dark anymore; they seemed impossibly bright, illuminated by a predatory filter.
Arthur opened his eyes.
The world looked entirely different. It was terrifyingly beautiful. The ancient trees were outlined in a faint, pulsing violet light. The ambient moonlight slicing through the canopy seemed sharper, cutting through the dark like silver blades.
His physical body felt impossibly stronger than it had during the day. It was a suffocating, absolute power.
Arthur slowly clenched his fist. "So this is what happens after sunset."
He moved.
*BOOM!*
His fist struck the solid earth beneath him. The ground literally cracked open, a spiderweb of fissures spreading outward for ten feet.
Arthur stared at the destruction. His sheer physical output had increased dramatically.
But something else had changed. The curse wasn’t simply increasing his raw strength.
It was turning up the volume on his emotions.
Every single thought passing through his mind became terrifyingly sharp. Every passing desire became a heavy, crushing need. Every dark memory felt immediate and present.
The exact moment he thought of Elena waiting for him, his chest tightened with an overwhelming, toxic possessiveness. The moment he thought of Kaelera trembling on that auction block, his anger flared into a blinding, murderous rage. The moment he remembered the sneering nobles in their carriage...
The violet aura flared ten feet into the air.
Arthur immediately dug his heels into the dirt. "No."
He forced his lungs to expand. He forced his racing heart to slow.
"I won’t let you decide what I feel," he snarled through gritted teeth.
The curse pulsed violently in response.
Arthur smiled bitterly, sweat beading on his forehead. "You want me angry."
*Pulse.*
"You want me afraid."
*Pulse.*
"You want me to completely lose control."
The darkness aggressively climbed higher up his arms, threatening to swallow his vision.
Arthur stared into the dark flames. "Then I’ll give you something else to chew on."
He slammed the mental gate open and activated the Concentrated Mana.
Brilliant, blinding emerald light exploded through his body from the core outward. The violently expanding violet darkness collided with it instantly.
The entire clearing shook violently under the pressure.
Arthur gritted his teeth, his muscles screaming in agony. The two immense powers pushed against each other, fighting for absolute dominance over his body.
But instead of violently destroying one another in a localized explosion... they began circulating together.
The emerald mana was pure, stable, and deeply rooted in his soul. The violet curse was wildly chaotic, hungry, and entirely reactive. But the Concentrated Mana could act like a heavy iron anchor in a storm.
Arthur focused every ounce of his willpower.
Slowly. Carefully. Brutally.
The wild violet energy began to compress. The massive, towering aura shrank back, pulling closer and closer to his physical body, anchored by the green light.
Arthur finally breathed out a long, shaky exhale. "That’s it."
He took a slow, deliberate step forward. The violet flames followed his movement perfectly. They still burned, they still whispered dark temptations in his ear, but they no longer spread uncontrollably.
They obeyed.
Not perfectly. It felt like holding a starving wolf by a frayed leash. But it was enough.
Arthur let out a triumphant laugh. "I can control you."
Instantly, the darkness surged with terrifying speed.
Arthur’s smile vanished as the curse violently struck his mind with a tidal wave of pure emotion.
*Anger. Loneliness. Desire. Fear. Need.*
It hit him with the force of a physical blow. Arthur dropped heavily to one knee, clutching his head. "Stop..."
The ancient forest seemed to dissolve around him.
Suddenly, he was looking at his old world. His cramped, empty apartment. His glowing computer screen. The sterile, silent kitchen. The cold linoleum floor. The knife. The suffocating, absolute loneliness of his entire past life.
Then, Xetra’s face appeared in the dark. Her radiant smile. Her gentle kindness. The fragile promise that they might meet again.
Arthur’s breathing became ragged, tearing at his throat.
The curse took those precious memories and aggressively twisted them into weapons.
*You were alone.*
Arthur clenched his teeth, squeezing his eyes shut.
*You were entirely unwanted.*
"No."
*No one loved you.*
"Shut up."
*No one will love you here, either. You will die alone again.*
Arthur’s eyes snapped open. His emerald mana exploded outward in a furious shockwave.
The violet aura was violently pushed back, shattering the illusions.
Arthur screamed into the dark, his voice echoing off the trees. "You are not my memories!"
The forest shook. The curse recoiled, retreating into the depths of his chest like a beaten dog.
Arthur remained kneeling in the dirt for several long minutes. Sweat dripped steadily from his chin. His hands trembled violently against his knees.
He stared down at his shaking hands. Then, slowly, a low, exhausted laugh bubbled up from his chest.
Not because anything about the situation was funny. He laughed because he had finally, truly understood the mechanics of the trap.
The curse couldn’t create anything from nothing. It didn’t have its own thoughts. It needed him. It needed his anger, his deep-seated fears, his profound loneliness, and his desires. It took what already existed inside his human heart and magnified it into an overwhelming weapon.
Arthur slowly stood up, wiping the sweat from his face.
"So that’s your game," he whispered to the dark.
The violet aura flickered faintly in response.
He looked toward the distant direction of the manor. "I won’t run from you anymore."
He raised his hand. The emerald and violet energy instantly coiled together, a perfect, lethal helix of light and dark.
"But I will absolutely not let you control me, either."
Hours passed.
Arthur continued training deep into the night. He relentlessly tested the limits of the dual system. He tested exactly how much Concentrated Mana was required to perfectly suppress the curse’s emotional spikes. Then, he tested exactly how much the curse could safely amplify his physical strength without bleeding into his mind.
He discovered something fascinating. The powers could be intentionally overlapped.
The emerald Concentrated Mana provided absolute control and stability. The violet curse provided massive, explosive output. When he combined them carefully, they created a physical state far, far beyond what either magic could ever accomplish alone.
But the longer he maintained that delicate balance, the harder it became to think clearly. The mental exhaustion was staggering.
So, Arthur established a strict rule.
Five minutes of dual-activation. Then, total rest. Five minutes on. Rest.
He repeated the grueling cycle throughout the entire night.
By the time the silver moon reached its absolute highest point in the sky, Arthur was utterly exhausted. His muscles ached, and his clothes were soaked with sweat.
But he was smiling.
He had learned more about his own potential in one single night than he had since waking up in Valen’s bed. He finally understood that the curse wasn’t simply a parasitic death sentence. It was a second system. An incredibly dangerous, volatile one, yes. But it was a tool.
And he needed to completely master it before it found a way to master him.
Back at the manor, Elena stood silently beside the large window in the grand library.
She stared out across the vast estate, looking toward the dark tree line of the forest. Arthur still hadn’t returned.
Kaelera stood quietly a few feet behind her.
"He lied," Kaelera whispered softly.
Elena glanced back over her shoulder. Kaelera’s ears were lowered defensively.
"He said he was going to the manor," Kaelera pointed out.
Elena nodded slowly, turning her gaze back to the dark trees. "I know."
"Why?"
"I don’t know." Elena rested her hand against the cold glass. "But he’s hiding something."
Kaelera’s golden eyes reflected the pale moonlight streaming through the window. "The darkness."
Elena turned fully around, her brow furrowing. "What?"
Kaelera reached up, her trembling fingers lightly touching the heavy iron collar secured around her neck. "The darkness inside him." She swallowed hard. "It calls to this."
Elena’s expression became incredibly serious. She walked over to the beast-woman. "Are you sure?"
Kaelera nodded quickly, looking back toward the distant forest. "Tonight... it is much stronger."
Far away from the manor, deep in the dark woods, Arthur was walking back toward the lake when he suddenly stopped dead in his tracks.
He felt something.
It wasn’t the curse. It was something entirely external.
His head snapped toward the dense cluster of ancient trees to his right. There was a presence nearby. His heightened senses could feel it. He couldn’t see anyone in the shadows, but the sensation of heavy, calculating eyes watching him was undeniable.
Arthur slowly reached inward. The violet flames sparked to life around his right hand, illuminating the dark woods.
"Who’s there?" Arthur demanded, his voice echoing sharply.
Silence.
Then...
*SNAP.*
A heavy, dry branch broke in the dark under a booted foot.
Arthur’s expression hardened instantly into a mask of pure lethality.
Someone was in his private forest. And worse, they had been watching him train with the dual magic.
For how long? He had no idea.
But one thing was absolutely certain as he raised his glowing fist into the dark.
Arthur was no longer alone.
