Chapter 24: No Exit

My System Wants Me Dead

The eighth floor was unlike anything above it.

Where previous floors had been structured around singular enemy types with consistent behavioral patterns, the eighth floor mixed its population—Death Knights walked patrol routes through the same corridors as Soul Husks, with Bone Colossuses anchoring the larger chambers and functioning as mobile obstacles rather than territory holders. The combination made clean engagements significantly harder to guarantee.

Constantine spent his first hour mapping the population distribution through Hollow Sense before committing to a single confrontation.

The Death Knights were the immediate priority problem. Unlike the Skeleton Knights of the second floor, these were fully animated entities with active intelligence and equipment sets that reflected long dungeon experience—long spears with spectral-tipped heads that disrupted intangibility on contact, and awareness Skills that extended their detection range substantially beyond their visual field. He ran into the spear's anti-spectral property in the first exchange before he understood it, surfacing from a phase move directly into a thrust that connected when it shouldn't have.

Level 97.

He reformulated immediately.

The revised approach removed phase movement from close-engagement entirely and substituted Spirit Drain at range combined with Soul Shatter for high-resistance targets. Death Knights responded poorly to Soul Shatter—their construction had layered magical hardening that made standard spectral attacks inefficient, but Soul Shatter's penetrating force bypassed it cleanly. The Bone Colossuses were easier despite their size. Massive physical construction without meaningful magical component meant Soul Shatter dismantled them in two direct contacts.

Skill Crystals dropped with greater frequency on the eighth floor than any floor below it.

By the second day, he had absorbed four.

[Skill Crystal: Phantom Grasp]

{The user extends a spectral force that grips and immobilizes a target regardless of physical resistance. Duration scales with the user's Level and diminishes against significantly superior targets.}

[Skill Crystal: Wail of the Hollow]

{The user emits a concentrated spectral frequency that disrupts the coordination of all entities within its radius. Effect is amplified against physically-constructed targets such as bone and stone-based entities.}

[Skill Crystal: Death's Patience]

{The user's ability cooldown rate decreases passively over time in sustained combat. Effect resets between engagements and scales with the number of consecutive abilities used.}

[Skill Crystal: Spirit Veil]

{The user creates a mobile decoy that registers identically to the user's own spiritual signature across all detection methods. Duration and behavioral complexity scale with user Level.}

The eighth floor's Boss was a Death Lord—a Death Knight that had accumulated enough concentrated essence to develop autonomous intelligence and a full Skill set of its own. Constantine cleared it in under twenty minutes using Phantom Grasp to create immobilization windows that the Death Lord had no counter to, and Soul Shatter through an immobilized target dealt substantially amplified damage.

The Boss drops included two SSR pieces: [Veil of the Death Lord (SSR)], a robe granting active damage negation to spectral energy attacks on activation, and [Soul-Eater Gauntlets (SSR)], which amplified Spirit Drain's range and rate enough to make it a primary combat tool. The crystal it left behind was equally welcome.

[Skill Crystal: Soul Fracture]

{A targeted spectral attack that fragments the target's soul structure, inflicting damage that cannot be recovered through conventional healing or Level restoration. Cooldown: substantial.}

He equipped the new gear and pressed on.

The ninth floor carried a lighter population than the eighth but compensated in individual entity quality. Wight Lords and Ancient Specters occupied the space—entities one classification step below the floor's own Boss. Ancient Specters were the worst of them. They operated on the same spectral frequency as his own class, making them resistant to every intangibility-based approach. He couldn't phase past them; they phased with him. Soul Shatter was his primary reliable option, and they were durable enough to require multiple applications.

Wail of the Hollow suppressed their coordination in grouped encounters and bought him the half-second windows that Soul Shatter needed. Spirit Veil gave him a decoy that Ancient Specters reliably pursued—their detection method prioritized signature intensity, which made a constructed duplicate highly persuasive—and gave him free positioning to charge attacks without interruption.

A crystal dropped from a Wight Lord patrol on the third day.

[Skill Crystal: Bone Fracture]

{Disrupts the structural integrity of physical and energy-based constructs through targeted spiritual force. Especially effective against entities with high physical resistance.}

The ninth floor's Boss was a Wight Sovereign—a Wight Lord that had undergone the same accumulative transformation as the Death Lord, with spectral intelligence and a Skill suite that made it the most demanding standalone opponent since the Litch. The fight lasted forty minutes and cost him six Levels at the worst point. When it ended, he had recovered to Level 90 from the Boss EXP and absorbed the twelfth Skill.

[Skill Crystal: Ethereal Speed]

{Dramatically enhances movement velocity while the user is in an intangible state. Effect scales with Level and is amplified by equipment with spectral affinity.}

The Boss drops added [Sovereign's Crown (SSR)] and [Wraith-Step Greaves (SSR)] to his loadout.

He checked his equipped items.

Every piece was SSR.

'Twelve Skills. Full SSR equipment. Level 90,' he thought, moving toward the descent passage. 'The last stretch.'

The tenth floor was the densest in terms of ambient spiritual pressure.

It wasn't an enemy density issue. The population was actually lighter than the ninth floor—fewer entities, larger territories, more separation between encounters. What made the tenth floor different was the atmosphere itself, a concentrated essence produced by decades of powerful Undead cycling through the space and leaving residue. It slowed everything marginally—movement, perception, reaction time—not by much, but consistently enough that he had to account for it.

The floor's enemies demanded his full toolkit in combinations he hadn't used before. Warlocks with high magical resistance worked in coordinated formations alongside Skeletal Guardians with high physical resistance, each covering the other's weaknesses as long as they remained together. He separated them before engaging every time—Phantom Grasp on the Guardian to immobilize it, Soul Shatter on the Warlock while it was isolated, then reversed the sequence on the next formation before they could adapt.

It worked. It was also slower than any floor below it.

Level 93. Level 95. Level 97.

Twelve Skills operating in combination created options that no single Skill could generate, and the tenth floor was the clearest demonstration of that yet. Spirit Veil gave him positioning freedom. Wail of the Hollow suppressed coordinated formations. Soul Fracture handled the encounters where resistance made standard attacks insufficient. Ethereal Speed gave him engagement and disengagement control that turned the floor's larger territorial spacings into an advantage rather than an obstacle.

Level 98. Level 99.

He reached the corridor leading to the Boss Room at Level 99.

[System Notice]

{One more Level, Host! The Gacha would love to congratulate you. Why not celebrate? :)}

He closed the notification and advanced.

A Warlock and two Guardians occupied the space between him and the Boss Room entrance. He read their formation through Hollow Sense, circled through the wall to the optimal engagement angle, and cleared the encounter in under ninety seconds.

[You Have Leveled Up!]

Level 100.

The prompt appeared immediately beneath it.

[Achievement: Level Cap Reached]

{Select one: Advance Class / Change Race}

He stood at the Boss Room entrance with the prompt open and both options waiting, and let himself feel the weight of the number for exactly two seconds. Every floor, every Level lost and clawed back, every fight where he'd emerged with less than he'd entered—it had all pointed here. Change Race. Human form. Out of the dungeon and into the world with an identity that didn't classify him as a monster.

Then Hollow Sense screamed.

Not in the way it normally registered presences—a quiet ambient awareness at the edge of its radius. This was six signatures appearing simultaneously at close range, with the abrupt completeness of something that had been actively suppressed until the moment suppression was deliberately released.

He was already phasing when the first binding hit him.

Six thin lines of golden energy converged on his position from points distributed around the corridor, placed in advance from angles that formed a closed geometry around the space he occupied. They struck his semi-intangible form and the phase state didn't hold. The bindings conducted directly through the intangibility and anchored in his spiritual structure, forcing a return to solidity he hadn't chosen. He hit solid form and the corridor floor simultaneously, and the lines tightened around his arms and torso before he could reorient.

He tried Ghost Step.

It initiated and died before it propagated—not blocked externally but intercepted at the point of origin, the anchor lines threading through his spiritual structure and dampening ability function within a radius of his own body. He tried Phantom Grasp and felt the same suppression apply at the source.

'Soul Anchors. High-grade. Pre-positioned.'

He looked up.

Edric stood at the corridor's far end with his arm lowered and his expression identical to what it had been outside the Litch's chamber—unreadable, unhurried, reading the space with the same quiet attention that had made him dangerous from the moment Constantine first detected him. Behind him, spread in practiced formation across the corridor's width, were the four Rank 4 Adventurers. All equipped differently from the last encounter. All carrying that same faint golden energy as the anchor lines.

Anti-spectral gear. Specifically sourced. Applied to a layout that had used his own Hollow Sense's detection method against him—six presences suppressed past his awareness threshold until the trap was already closed, appearing only when running was no longer an option.

Constantine tested the bindings against the Veil of the Death Lord's damage negation and Iron Bones simultaneously.

Neither applied.

Soul Anchors operated on the spiritual layer rather than the physical, which placed them outside every resistance category he had built. Intangibility ran on the same foundation the Anchors were now threaded through, which was why they had been able to intercept the phase state directly. Twelve Skills and full SSR equipment, and every defensive layer he possessed was addressing a different problem than the one currently holding him to the floor.

He looked at the Level prompt still waiting in his vision.

[Select one: Advance Class / Change Race]

Then at Edric.

Then at the six anchor lines.

The one thought that rose above everything else was simple and entirely without comfort.

'This is very bad.'
