Powerful Protection of His Wife
Qin Mingzhu had a bad feeling and sure enough, the next moment
“Xiao Zhi finally came back to the country, I just brought her over. Let’s all have lunch together today!” In an instant, Qin Mingzhu understood where Gu Man’s hostility toward her came from.
So she wasn’t the sister-in-law Gu Man had hoped for.
“Nonsense! Today’s lunch is a family gathering why did you bring Xiao Zhi here?” Old Madam Gu said, avoiding the main point.
“Didn’t Xiao Zhi always come before?” Gu Man argued confidently. “Why can’t she now?”
Her gaze shifted to the left, pointing directly at Qin Mingzhu. Everyone’s attention followed.
“Is it because of her now? If only one of them can exist, I choose Sister Xiao Zhi.”
“Silly girl, what nonsense are you talking about?” Old Madam Gu scolded lightly.
Everyone present was sharp they could immediately tell the old lady and the girl were playing along together. They all turned to watch Qin Mingzhu’s reaction.
To their surprise, not only did Qin Mingzhu show no panic, she had even been grinning silently for quite a while.
Everyone: …
Did Gu Jingchen marry a fool?
“Ahem.”
Qin Mingzhu composed herself, covering her mouth with a fist, and said seriously, “I understand how you feel, but I’m sorry you can’t change the facts. Your brother and I are already legally married.”
“Are you showing off?” Gu Man fumed.
Qin Mingzhu shrugged innocently. “I’m just reminding you it’s useless no matter how much effort you put into matchmaking your brother with Lin Zhi. You’d be better off focusing on your studies.”
“I got first place in my entrance exam this semester!”
“It’s not like that’s the only exam you’ll ever have,” Qin Mingzhu replied with a grin.
At the mention of studies, Gu Man’s temper flared. She stomped her feet. “You’re really annoying. I don’t accept you as my sister-in-law!”
“Manman,” Qin Mingzhu looked at her with mock pity, “things in life don’t always go the way you want. For example, I don’t really like you as my sister-in-law either but I’ve accepted it just fine. You should learn from me.”
Gu Man had never seen someone so shameless.
Her lips trembled as tears began to fall.
Oh she’s crying.
Qin Mingzhu guiltily glanced at Gu Jingchen. The man beside her suddenly stood up and pulled her into his arms.
…What’s he doing now?
Qin Mingzhu was stunned. She tried to lift her head but could only see his chin.
“Gu Man, I thought you would have grown up after five years.”
Gu Jingchen pressed her head down firmly, leaving her only able to feel the vibration of his chest as he spoke.
Despite the warmth of his embrace, his words were cold.
“You’ve really improved you can even force me to leave now.”
“That’s not what I meant!” Gu Man sounded panicked and wronged. “It’s just a meal! Brother, don’t go, okay?”
“Then you can eat with Lin Zhi.”
Gu Jingchen wrapped an arm around Qin Mingzhu’s waist and strode toward the exit.
“Jingchen!” Old Madam Gu stood up sternly. “Enough! It’s just a meal why make such a big fuss?”
“Judging by the situation,” Gu Jingchen turned and swept his gaze over everyone, a mocking smile on his lips, “it doesn’t seem like a small fuss. It’s just two fewer bowls at the table. Grandma, enjoy your meal.”
The room fell into an awkward silence. Qin Mingzhu, still pressed against his chest, was dying of curiosity.
She really wanted to watch the drama!
She really wanted to see everyone’s expressions!
As if hearing her thoughts or perhaps because she was fidgeting too much Gu Jingchen finally loosened his hold. Qin Mingzhu immediately popped out.
And just like that, her gaze collided with Lin Zhi, who stood at the doorway.
Wow watching the show from the sidelines while letting Gu Man and Old Madam Gu take the front line. Pretty sly.
Qin Mingzhu raised a brow and gave a teasing smile.
“I’m sorry, everyone,” Lin Zhi quickly stepped forward, lowering her head guiltily. “I didn’t expect this to cause an argument. Miss Qin, you don’t have to leave I’ll go instead.”
She frowned slightly in apparent distress, tears hovering in her eyes, looking utterly pitiful.
“Jingchen, do you hate me that much now?”
After all, they had grown up together. Gu Jingchen closed his eyes, looking weary.
If this kept going, they might really rekindle their childhood romance.
Qin Mingzhu broke the stalemate first, whining sweetly, “Husband, what are you all talking about?”
Her overly sweet voice made goosebumps rise on Gu Jingchen’s skin.
The faint trace of sentiment in him disappeared instantly. He simply looked down at his little wife, wondering what trick she was about to pull next.
“Since it’s just a meal, and the dishes are already on the table, we might as well eat before leaving,” Qin Mingzhu said, shaking his hand coquettishly.
Gu Jingchen resisted the urge to pull his hand away and asked in a low voice, “You’re sure?”
“Of course.” Qin Mingzhu shot him a flirtatious glance trust me.
Gu Jingchen: …
He took a deep breath, withdrew his hand coldly, and turned around. “Fine.”
The Gu family, being so wealthy and powerful, had an extremely lavish spread on the table.
Qin Mingzhu sat to Gu Jingchen’s right. Out of the corner of her eye, she saw Lin Zhi, looking delicate yet determined, walking toward the seat on his left.
“Jingchen, can I sit beside you like before?” Her eyes were still slightly red, her fragile appearance stirring sympathy.
Before Gu Jingchen could respond, Old Madam Gu spoke up for her.
“It’s just a seat sit down.” She snorted. “As long as I’m still alive, the Gu family isn’t solely his to decide.”
Qin Mingzhu joined in, nodding. “Yes, go ahead and sit. A guest is a guest don’t make it seem like we’re bullying you. After all, you’re the young lady of the Lin family. It wouldn’t look good if word got out.”
“Heh… heh.” Lin Zhi forced a smile and pulled out the chair to sit.
With all the dishes served, Qin Mingzhu’s attention immediately shifted away from Gu Jingchen. Her eyes sparkled as she surveyed the table.
Bird’s nest, shark fin, abalone, sea cucumber, mushroom chicken soup… and many other delicacies she couldn’t even name her stomach was practically growling!
“Jingchen, this is your favorite.”
