The ceiling was unfamiliar.

Ren stared at it for three full seconds before his brain caught up — the smooth plaster, the paper lantern burning low in the corner, the warmth that had no right to exist in his body after what had just happened to him on that training ground.

He turned his head.Full novel: Naruto: The Bonds of Blood And Power — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

Not his house.

Not the clan compound’s crumbling guest quarters.

Not anywhere he recognized.

He sat up slowly, and the blanket slid off his shoulders like water.

“You’re awake.”

The woman in the chair hadn’t moved.

She sat with the particular stillness of someone who had been waiting a long time and had decided long ago to stop being impatient about it.

Red hair, pulled back with the careful precision of old habit.

A face that carried its years without apology.

Her eyes, when they opened, were the color of deep water.

Ren’s chest went very still.

Konoha.

Red hair.

That seal mark on her forehead.

He moved before he’d consciously decided to — threw back the covers, swung his legs to the floor, and dropped to one knee beside the bed.

The floorboards were cold through his socks.

“Thank you for saving my life, Lady Mito.”

One elegant eyebrow rose.

“I don’t recall mentioning my name to you.”

A beat.

Ren’s mind ran the options in the time it took to exhale.

Can’t say: ‘I watched your grandson’s story in another world and recognized you from animated footage.’ Can say:

“Forgive me,” he said, keeping his eyes respectfully low.

“But which woman in Konoha carries herself like that?

I couldn’t think of anyone else.”

A pause.

Then — the softest sound, barely there, like a page turning.

Mito Uzumaki was laughing.

“Sweet-talking brat,” she said, and the warmth in it was genuine enough that Ren felt his shoulders drop half an inch.

Something shifted in the room — a flicker across her expression, there and gone, as though she’d heard a voice only she could hear.

Her gaze went briefly inward.

Whatever passed between her and the thing sealed inside her chest, she settled it in seconds, and her attention returned to him with the unhurried ease of someone reclaiming a book they’d set aside.

“I heard you awakened your Sharingan,” she said.

“May I see it?”

“Of course.”

He closed his eyes.

The chakra was already there, sluggish and thin but present — Yin-natured, threading upward along the optic nerve the way water finds a crack in stone.

He opened his eyes.

The room sharpened.

Every dust mote in the lantern light hung suspended and distinct.

Mito Uzumaki’s expression was readable in a dozen new ways: the micro-tension at the corner of her mouth, the slight dilation of her pupils, the way her breathing had slowed in something that was not quite surprise but adjacent to it.

“Not bad,” she said quietly.

“A clean awakening.

The aura is…” She tilted her head.

“Comparable to Sharingan from the Warring States era.”

Ren didn’t move.

Didn’t speak.

The words landed somewhere behind his sternum and stayed there.

Warring States era.

He’d awakened at eighteen — the age the clan whispered about, the age that meant something had gone wrong, the age that made the elders look through him rather than at him.

He’d carried that assessment like a stone in his boot for months.

And Mito Uzumaki, who had seen Warring States Uchiha, was sitting three feet away comparing him to them.

He kept his face neutral through sheer effort of will.

“Thank you, Lady Mito,” he said.

She shook her head.

“Don’t thank me.

Tsunade found you on the ground and carried you here.

She’s out at a meeting — she’ll be back.”

Tsunade.

The name hit him with an absurd amount of force for two syllables.

He’d spent years watching Naruto, years knowing the lore, years filing away details the way a strategist files intelligence — and none of that preparation had included actually existing in the same world as her.

The warmth he’d noticed when he first woke up suddenly felt less like the room and more like something she’d left behind in the blankets.

He pulled his thoughts into order.

A meeting.

Pre-war mobilization, most likely.

Troop assignments.

She’s eighteen, she’s the Hokage’s student, she’ll be given a command role.

The shape of the next year arranged itself in his mind like pieces on a board: the war’s opening months, the Jonin conference, Tsunade’s proposal for a dedicated medical corps.

He needed to be at that conference.

He needed to reach Jonin rank and distinguish himself enough to earn a seat at the table — all within twelve months.

No pressure.

“Ren,” Mito said.

He blinked.

“Rest.

You’ve only just awakened, and chakra exhaustion doesn’t fix itself through scheming.” The ghost of amusement in her voice suggested she’d been watching his expression the entire time.

“When Tsunade returns, you’ll have plenty to discuss.

You’re the same age.”

He bowed his head.

“Thank you, Lady Mito.”

She rose, smoothed her robes, and crossed to the door with the unhurried certainty of a woman who had never once in her life needed to hurry.

At the threshold she paused, hand on the frame, and glanced back.

“By the way,” she said, “this is Tsunade’s room.”

She left.

Ren sat completely still for approximately four seconds.

Then he lay back down.

The pillow carried a faint scent — something clean, faintly herbal, the kind of smell that didn’t announce itself but simply was.

He stared at the ceiling again, and this time it felt entirely different.

Focus, he told himself, with limited success.

The notification arrived without fanfare, without sound — just text assembling itself across his vision like ink spreading through water:

[System Binding Complete — Strongest Ninja System Active]

[Confirm activation?]

He didn’t hesitate.

“Yes.”

[Current Status — Chakra Level: Genin | Combat Strength: Genin]

[Bloodline Limit: One-Tomoe Sharingan — upgradeable]

[Newbie Gift Pack detected.

Open?]

Genin.

He’d known it, but seeing it written out with such clinical indifference still stung.

On the Second Shinobi World War’s battlefield, Genin-level chakra was the difference between a combatant and a casualty statistic.

“Open it,” he said.

[Chakra upgraded to Chunin-level]

[Skill Unlocked: Fire Style: Great Fire Annihilation Jutsu (B-rank) — directly mastered]

[Sharingan reward replaced — equivalent substitution processing…]

[Wind and Earth chakra natures detected — minimum requirements for Kekkei Genkai met]

[Skill Unlocked: Sand Binding Pivot (B-rank) — directly mastered]

The change moved through him like a tide coming in.

His chakra pathways stretched — not painfully, but with the strange pressure of a muscle being worked for the first time, a sensation that sat right at the edge of discomfort and didn’t cross it.

The pallor that had been pulling at the edges of his vision since the Sharingan awakening retreated.

His hands, lying open on the blanket, stopped trembling.

The knowledge of both jutsu arrived complete, as if he’d drilled them for years.

His fingers twitched.

Sand.

There was a fine layer of it on the windowsill — tracked in from somewhere, dried clay-dust from the garden, barely visible.

His chakra reached for it before he’d consciously decided, and it moved, rising in a slow curl —

He cut the flow immediately.

His heart hammered once, hard.

Mito Uzumaki is in the next room.

He lay perfectly still, listening.

No footsteps.

No approaching chakra signature he could sense with his limited perception.

He breathed out through his nose, slow and deliberate, and made a mental note to practice not reflexively using new abilities within range of one of the most powerful sensory ninja Konoha had ever produced.

Across the hall, Mito Uzumaki withdrew her Kagura’s Mind Eye and folded her hands in her lap.

The boy’s chakra signature had just done something very interesting.

She’d felt the Magnet Release flare and die in the span of a single breath — controlled, fast, instinctive.

The restraint was almost more impressive than the ability.

He’s hiding it, she thought.

And he’s been hiding it well.

She looked toward the door of Tsunade’s room, and the corner of her mouth curved — not quite a smile, but the shape of one that was thinking about becoming something more.

The young people could sort themselves out.

She wouldn’t interfere.

But she would, she decided, be paying attention.

Hey dude, you finished that chapter and just paddled off quietly.

Nah.

Drop a comment down there, whatever you’re feeling.

Good vibes, bad vibes, doesn’t matter.

Honestly it’s what keeps this whole thing going, no joke.
