The silence after the rain held the weight of a held breath.

“Lord Hanzo.” The Rain ninja’s voice was a dry rustle in the damp hall.

The civilians, the army… we have one day of food left.

Two at most.”

Hanzo of the Salamander did not move from his seat.

Four months.

Four months since he had thrown his declaration of war at the feet of three great nations.

The first two months had tasted of lightning and blood, his forces striking deep into foreign soil.

Then the giants had turned their heads.

They had not been weak.

They had been patient.

He had crushed their vanguard armies in a single, brutal day, but that had only drawn their full gaze here, to his capital.

To Ame.

Rain Cleared City.

The name was a prayer he’d carved into this swamp—a hope for clear skies after the storm.

The drizzle outside his window had not ceased in weeks.

He waved a hand, a stiff gesture.

The ninja bowed and vanished into the gloom.

Hanzo stood.

His joints protested.

He walked to the archway overlooking his city, the gray towers weeping constant tears.

A strand of hair, stark white against the black, fell across his vision.

He was tired.

Then the sound began.

It drifted from beyond the eastern wall, carried on the wet air.

Not a war cry.

Not a chant.

A melody.

Slow, mournful, familiar.

The Rain Country ballad.

The song of home.

He was at the eastern gate in a dozen heartbeats, scaling the stone steps.

His chakra flared, sharpening his vision across the distance.

There, just outside effective artillery range, stood the Konoha forces.

They weren’t preparing to charge.

They stood in ranks, hands at their sides, faces tilted toward Ame.

Their mouths were open.

Chakra amplified the sound, weaving their voices into a single, piercing thread that slipped past the walls and into the streets below.

Hanzo’s fist clenched on the cold, wet stone of the battlement.

What was this?

Psychological warfare?

A taunt?

He looked down into his own city.

His soldiers lining the inner walls had stopped moving.

A ninja lowered his drawn sword, the point scraping against the stone walkway.

Another leaned his forehead against the haft of his spear.

Their shoulders slumped.

A young chuunin by the gatehouse was weeping silently, his tears mingling with the rain on his cheeks.

The song coiled through the streets, a ghost of hearths and dry land.

It didn’t break bones.

It broke will.

Hanzo sucked in a thin, sharp breath.

The air tasted of damp rot and defeat.

Very good.

The Konoha commander was a surgeon of the soul.

Starve the body, then poison the spirit.

His army’s fighting strength was bleeding out into the mud without a single arrow being fired.

A flicker of movement at the edge of the Konoha camp.

Two scouts, moving fast.

Hanzo’s gaze narrowed.

His own chance for a reversal, perhaps, hinged on whatever news they brought.

Tsunade’s command tent smelled of wet canvas and pine resin.

The first scout collapsed through the flap, an Uchiha from Jiraiya’s division.

Blood crusted his temple, and his breathing came in ragged hitches.

He didn’t kneel.

He swayed.

“Report,” Tsunade said, her voice flat.

“Lady Tsunade.

Commander.” The scout’s eyes found Ren, then flickered away, glassy.

“The west gate siege… we had them.

Then Chiyo of the Sand appeared.

Five hundred Suna ninja.

A flank attack.

Our forces… shattered.

Lord Jiraiya is retreating toward your position.

Heavy losses.”

The words hung in the resin-scented air.

Ren’s jaw tightened.

A muscle jumped in his cheek.

He saw the map in his mind, the pieces he’d placed, and the new, violent piece Sunagakure had just slammed onto the board.

Tsunade opened her mouth, a reassurance already forming, when the second scout arrived.

This one wore the flak jacket of the Yamanaka clan, clean but for mud on his boots.

His face was pale with a rage he kept caged behind his teeth.

“Lady Tsunade.

Commander Ren.

Onoki of Iwa.

He led a thousand through the southern passes.

Hit our rear.

Lord Orochimaru engaged.

Two hundred casualties.

He is retreating north with six hundred.

He will be here by nightfall.”

The silence that followed was absolute, broken only by the plink of a single drop of water falling from the tent seam onto the map table.

Ren closed his eyes.

The pressure behind them was immense.

He had planned for the rain.

He had not planned for the desert and the mountain to move at once.

Arrogance.

A strategist’s fatal flaw.

He dropped to one knee, the damp earth cold through his pants.

“The fault is mine, Lady Tsunade.

My command failed.

The punishment is yours to give.”

Across the tent, Ryuichi and Ryuji exchanged a glance, stepping forward.

A middle-aged Senju clansman laid a warning hand on Ryuichi’s arm, his face grim.

The message was clear: the chain of command was a blade, and it had to fall somewhere.

Her hand, strong and calloused, gripped his shoulder and pulled him up.

Her gaze held no blame, only a weary, flinty resolve.

“Ren.

Look at me.” Her voice was low, for him alone.

“Your strategy broke Hanzo’s spirit and his walls with a vanguard and a song.

You achieved the Hokage’s objective with minimal bloodshed.

No one, not even sensei, could have accounted for two other Kage deciding to stab us in the back at the same moment.” She squeezed his shoulder.

“The fault lies with the wolves, not the shepherd.

Now get up.

We need to figure out how to survive the pack.”

Ren stood.

The weight didn’t leave, but it shifted, turning from a stone of shame into a mantle of necessity.

The tent flap whipped open.

Jiraiya entered first, his white hair matted with grime and blood, three hundred bedraggled ninja at his back.

Orochimaru slipped in behind him like a shadow, his contingent larger but bearing the same hollow-eyed look of a forced retreat.

They scanned the tent, their eyes finding Tsunade, then locking onto Ren.

Ren braced himself.

The reprimand.

The justified anger.

He met their gaze.

Jiraiya and Orochimaru moved as one.

They crossed the space between them and dropped to their knees, fists on the ground, heads bowed before him.

Ren froze.

The air left his lungs.

“What are you—”

“Commander Ren,” Orochimaru’s voice was a cool, precise scrape.

“The failure in rear defense and perimeter security is mine.

A commander executes the plan.

I failed in the execution.

The lapse is mine to bear.”

Jiraiya’s head came up, his usual boisterousness burned away, leaving something harder underneath.

“He’s right.

We got greedy at the gate.

Forgot to watch our own backs.

The plan was sound.

We were the weak link.

Punish us.

Then tell us how to fix it.”

Ren stared at them.

The kneecaps of two of the Legendary Sannin were pressing into the mud of a Rain Country field, for him.

Not for the clan.

Not for the Hokage.

For the chain of command.

For the idea that a village fought as one body.

Tsunade walked over and stood beside her teammates, completing the triangle.

She looked down at Ren, a faint, fierce smile touching her lips.

“The command is waiting, Commander.”

Ren took a breath.

This time, it filled his lungs completely.

The scent of pine resin and wet earth and exhausted sweat—the smell of a village that, for all its flaws, refused to break.

His eyes cleared.

The map in his mind re-formed, not with the pieces he wished he had, but with the pieces he did: a broken Rain, two invading armies, and a Konoha force that had just shown him its spine.

“Get up,” he said, his voice quiet but carrying the edge of a new plan being whetted.

“We have work to do.”
