The air in the room shifted the moment Tsunade left.

It grew heavier, dense with the scent of old paper and the faint, medicinal undertone of the tea Mito Uzumaki was brewing.

Her skin was cool, paper-thin over bones that remembered a different century.

“Come inside.” Her voice held no room for argument.

He followed.

The inner room was spartan, dominated by a low table and the lingering ghost of Senju Hashirama’s presence.

Mito’s hands moved through a series of seals—fluid, effortless.

A barrier snapped into place around them, muting the world to a dull hum.

The only sound left was the quiet hiss of steam from the iron kettle.

She poured two cups.

“Speak.”

His pulse tapped a rhythm against his ribs.

He met her gaze.

“Grandma Mito.

What is the fighting strength of the Uzumaki clan?”

The porcelain cup in her hand paused halfway to the table.

She set it down with a soft click.

“We are scholars of the seal.

Healers.

Our strength is in preservation, not conquest.

It has always been enough.” Her eyes narrowed, a fraction.

“Why do you ask?”

He leaned forward, palms flat on the cool wood.

“If an enemy attacks the Land of Whirlpools while Konoha is pinned in the Land of Rain—will the village send aid?”

The air turned to ice.

Gold chains erupted from behind Mito, not with a roar, but a whisper of lethal intent.

They wrapped around his torso, his arms, pinning him to the floor.

The pressure was immense, cold iron against his ribs, but carefully calibrated.

It sealed his movement, not his breath.

Mito Uzumaki stood.

The kindly grandmother was gone.

In her place stood the princess of a fallen sea-kingdom, her eyes chips of violet ice.

“Who gave you permission to speak such poison?”

Ren forced air into his lungs. New chapters come out on g.com first.

The chains hummed with contained power.

“It’s not poison.

It’s strategy.

The other nations have crude seals.

Their beasts break free.

They look at the Whirlpool Country and see a library of solutions they cannot steal, and an ally they cannot tolerate.” He spoke fast, the words tripping over each other.

“Konoha is your ally.

But the Third Hokage needs a victory to cement his rule.

He is Hokage of the Leaf, not guardian of the Whirlpools.

Will he sacrifice a winning front for sentiment?”

The chains tightened.

A warning.

Then, they loosened.

The cold fury in Mito’s eyes fractured, revealing a sliver of raw fear.

She had not considered it.

Not truly.

She had trusted in the old bonds, in Hashirama’s legacy.

The chains dissolved into golden light, then nothing.

Mito sank back to her cushion, her face pale.

The steam from the forgotten tea rose between them like a ghost.

“They would not just take the scrolls,” she whispered, not to him, but to the memory of her home.

“They would take the people.

Our chakra… our vitality.”

Ren rubbed his chest where the chains had been.

No bruise.

A lesson, not an attack.

“They would.”

She looked at him, her composure a fragile mask.

“You raise this shadow.

Do you have a blade to cut it down?”

He did.

The plan had crystallized the moment he decided to walk here.

“Does your word still carry weight in the Land of Whirlpools?”

“It does.”

“And do you miss them?

Your clan?”

She gave a single, slow nod.

“Then invite them for a visit.

The great Uzumaki Mito, the Nine-Tails’ Jinchuriki, is not long for this world.

She wishes to see her family one last time.

Many will come to pay their respects.”

Understanding dawned in her eyes, bright and terrible.

“We keep them here.

Under the protection of Konoha’s walls.

We use the war as the excuse—travel is too dangerous.”

“Yes.”

“They will think I betray them.

That I conspire with Konoha to swallow our clan whole.”

“They might.”

Mito Uzumaki straightened her spine.

The fear was gone, burned away by a steely resolve.

“Let them think it.

Let them curse my name in every port from here to the sea.

As long as they live to do it.”

She studied him then, her gaze stripping away every pretense.

“Your mind moves like water around stone.

It reminds me of two men I once knew.

Tobirama Senju.

And Izuna Uchiha.”

Ren shook his head.

“I am nothing like the legends of the Warring States.”

“I am never wrong in my judgment.” A faint, knowing smile touched her lips.

She gestured, and the barrier fell with a soft pop, letting the sounds of the compound back in.

“Come.

We will see Tsunade.

And I will begin writing letters.”

She took his hand again.

Her grip was firm now, certain.

As they stepped into the hallway, a shadow detached itself from the eaves outside the window, vanishing in a silent swirl of leaves.

The Anbu was already on his way to the Hokage.

And Ren walked beside the most dangerous woman in the village, wondering which of them had just bound the other.
