Chapter 15: Rebel or Die
Sho’s eyes snapped open, and the first thing that hit him were the first rays of sun from the early morning.
The second thing was the large text box that had appeared before his eyes.
“What the…when did this happen?”
He began to read the words.
[New Quest Detected!]
Quest: Become a Ninja!
Objective: Pass the Academy Graduation Exam and become a Genin.
Reward: 6,000 Experience Points, New System Function Unlocked: Inventory
Penalty for Failure: You will lose the support of the System…FOREVER!
Time Limit: 2 Weeks
Do you accept?
[YES] / [—]
Sho stared at the text box, his blood running cold.
“Hold on…
what?”
He blinked, expecting the words to change.
They didn’t.
The notification remained, its letters sharp and clear against his vision.
The tournament had consumed so much of his attention that he’d almost forgotten about graduation.
Two weeks… the final academy exam was in just two weeks.
He still needed to master the three basic jutsus: the Clone, Transformation, and Substitution.
But that wasn’t what made his heart race.
“You will lose the support of the System…forever?!”
That was the penalty written inside the text box, right beneath the reward.
He didn’t even have time to process the new System function that was being offered as a reward, because the penalty was just too shocking.
“I can lose the system?.
What kind of penalty is that?” His voice came out as a whisper, barely audible in the quiet room.
“That’s…
that’s not…”
He read the whole thing again, his eyes tracing the words.
The SYSTEM.
That was the source of his second chance.
The reason he could stand, could fight, and have hope for the future.
‘If I lose the system…
I’ll go back to being the sick boy.
The useless spare.
The burden.
What kind of joke is this?.’
His hands clenched into fists, trembling slightly.
“Also, why is the ‘forever’ in all caps?” He tried to sound annoyed, to inject some humor into the situation.
“For dramatic effect?”
The text box didn’t respond.
It never did.
But something about this felt different.
It felt wrong.
The system had never been so…
aggressive before.
It had offered quests, provided rewards, tracked his progress.
But it had never threatened him.
It had never made him feel like this.
Sho stared at the buttons.
He could accept the quest.
He could commit to passing the graduation exam in two weeks.
It was possible…barely.
He’d already mastered the Clone Technique at Novice Level 2.
He could learn the other two if he pushed himself hard enough.
‘Is not like I was planning on failing, but…but what if I fail?’
The thought made his stomach clench.
‘What if I try my best and still fail?
What happens then?’
He thought about continuing his life without the system.
The chronic fatigue would return.
The weakness, the illness, the constant exhaustion.
He’d be bedridden again, unable to train, unable to improve, unable to do anything but wait for the next fever to take him.
‘I can’t go back to that.
I can’t do that…’ The mere thought made him feel sick.
But he also considered the alternative.
Even if he failed the graduation exam, he could try again next year.
With the system, he could train for another twelve months.
By then, he might be the best student in the academy…maybe even rivaling Neji or Sasuke.
‘That’s not a terrible prospect.
Another year of training.
Another year to get stronger.’ Is not like anyone expects him to pass this year, so no one would be surprised or disappointed.
He looked at the quest text again.
[Penalty for Failure: You will lose the support of the System…FOREVER!]
‘But if I fail this quest, there won’t be another year.
There won’t be anything after this.
I will have to go back to be…nothing.’
He thought about Hinata and all the times he must have made her worry while falling sick, thinking that he was going to die at any moment, just like their mother did.
‘I can’t do that to her…not again.’ He would rather die than put her through that torment once more.
Sho shook his head; his decision became crystal clear.
“No.
The risk is too much.
I can’t accept this quest.”
His finger moved to the bottom of the text box, pressing on where the [NO] option should be.
Nothing happened.
“Huh?”
He pressed again, harder this time.
The text didn’t change.
The option didn’t appear.
Sho noticed something strange at the bottom of the message.
Do you accept?
[YES] / [—]
“Where is the NO?…” He had been pressing it without realizing that the letters were missing and had been replaced by some hyphens.
He tried again, pressing on the empty button.
“I said no.
I do not accept this quest!” He raised the volume of his voice as he became increasingly exasperated.
But…the message refused to go away.
The text box simply sat there, mocking him with its silence.
Then, the words began to blur and to change.
“What is happening?” He glanced at the text again.
The bottom part was different now.
Do you accept?
[YES] / [YES]
Sho’s breath caught in his throat.
“What…
what is this?”
He stared at the text box.
His heart was hammering against his ribs.
The options had changed.
Both buttons now read [YES] and [YES].
There was no way to refuse.
“You can’t…
You can’t force me to accept a quest!”
The text box began to blink, pulsing with an eerie rhythm.
The message at the bottom appeared to glow while growing in size.
Do you accept?
[YES] / [YES]
Sho felt shivers run down his spine.
Something about this made his blood run cold.
The system had always been impersonal and mechanical.
Like the video game interfaces he remembered from his past life…it was just a functional thing, emotionless, and devoid of agency.
But this…
this was different.
‘The system is showing agency.
It’s trying to force me to accept a quest I don’t want.’
“Why…
why are you doing this?” His voice trembled, but he forced himself to speak.
“You’ve never done anything like this before.”
The text box flickered.
For a moment, he thought nothing would happen.
That the system would remain silent, as it always had.
Then, a new line appeared inside the quest box.
[Power belongs to those willing to rebel against the Universe]
Sho stared at the words.
“The…
Universe?”
He had no idea what the system meant by this.
The phrase was cryptic, almost poetic…a strange departure from the system’s usual clinical tone.
This looked like something written by a person.
But somehow, he understood.
Deep in his bones, he understood the meaning behind those words.
‘It’s telling me that if I behave like a coward, if I refuse to take risks, this power will be taken away from me.’
His fists clenched at his sides.
“Even you are looking down on me?”
The words came out as a snarl, surprising him with their intensity.
But at this moment, the anger felt right, clean and pure.
Everyone in the clan had looked down on him his entire life.
His father.
The elders.
Neji.
Even Hanabi, his younger sister.
They’d all written him off, dismissed him, treated him like a burden…as something useless.
And now this thing, this cold, mechanical thing, was doing the same.
‘It’s trying to call me a coward.
It’s trying to make me feel small.’
He wouldn’t let it.
“Fine then!”
His finger slammed onto the [YES] button.
“I’ll do it!
I’ll take your stupid quest and pass it!.
I’ll show you what I’m capable of!”
[Quest: Become a Ninja!

Good Luck…Hyuga Shokuhi.]
The text box shimmered, then vanished.
Sho sat in the silence of his room, his chest heaving, his heart pounding.
‘What just happened?’
He looked down at his hands.
They were trembling.
His whole body was trembling.
‘The system forced me to accept a quest.
It changed the options.
It…
it threatened me.’
He took a deep breath, forcing himself to calm down.
‘This changes things.
The system isn’t just a tool.
It’s…
something else.
Something with its own agenda.’
He didn’t know what that agenda was.
He didn’t know what “rebellion against the Universe” meant.
But he knew one thing for certain.
‘I can’t afford to take it easy.
Not anymore.
And I cannot take this power for granted.’
He rose from his futon, his jaw set with determination.
“Two weeks.
I have two weeks to master the Transformation and Substitution techniques.
And I still need to improve the Clone Technique.”
He wasn’t worried about the theoretical aspects of the exam, as reading and studying were some of the few things that even the old him was able to do.
Because of this, his grades have always been quite good.
Though not as good as those from Haruno Sakura, but still good.
As long as he could learn how to use those three jutsus, he should be able to pass.
He looked at the window, at the sun rising over the Hyuga compound.
“I can do this.
I have to do this.”
He took a step toward the door…then paused for a moment.
‘But what if the system does this again?
What if it forces me into something worse?’
He pushed the thought aside.
‘No, Sho… let’s take this one problem at a time.
First, graduation.
Then, I’ll figure out what’s really going on.’
