Chapter 18: The Final Exam

The morning of his final test as an academy student had finally arrived.

Sho walked through the gates of the academy, his heart pounding with a mixture of nervousness and anticipation.

He wanted to feel more confident because he had prepared as much as it was humanly possible.

He had trained for as long as he had an ounce of chakra left and only rested what was necessary.

But he could not help but be nervous.

The stakes were too high.

If he failed to graduate for some reason…he would lose everything.

He would lose his second and probably last chance at becoming someone he could be proud of.

The building loomed before him, familiar and yet somehow different today.

Today, it was the threshold between his old life and his new one.

Students milled about the courtyard, some practicing their hand seals, others huddled in nervous groups.

Sho recognized most of them…classmates he’d spent years with, even if he’d never truly been one of them.

Sasuke Uchiha stood apart from the crowd, his expression cool and detached.

A gaggle of girls clustered nearby, stealing glances at him and whispering behind their hands.

Sakura Haruno was among them, her face flushed pink as she watched Sasuke with barely concealed adoration.

Ino Yamanaka stood nearby with a confident posture as her eyes scanned the crowd with her usual smugness.

“Are you nervous?” Hinata, who was standing at his side, asked.

Sho nodded.

There was no point in hiding it.

“I’m nervous too,” Hinata admitted, her voice soft.

“What if I mess up?

What if I forget the hand seals?”

“You won’t.” He squeezed her hand reassuringly.

“You’ve trained harder than anyone.

You’re going to do great.” He was at least completely confident about that.

There was no way his sister would fail.

Hinata’s cheeks flushed with color.

“Thank you, Sho-kun.

That means a lot.”

They stood together, watching the other students arrive.

Kiba came running in with Akamaru at his heels, his loud voice carrying across the courtyard.

Shino followed silently, his presence almost invisible despite being right there.

And then there was Naruto.

Sho spotted his friend near the back of the crowd, his usual boisterous energy conspicuously absent.

His shoulders were hunched, his eyes downcast.

He looked…

defeated.

‘He’s worried about the exam.

He’s been struggling with the Clone Technique for weeks.’

Sho wanted to go to him, to offer some words of encouragement.

But before he could move, the academy doors swung open, and Iruka-sensei stepped out.

“All students, please proceed to the examination hall.

The graduation exam will begin shortly.”

‘Time to go then…’

<><>

The examination hall was a large room with wooden floors and high ceilings.

Several desks had been arranged in a semicircle, with a clear space in the center for the demonstrations.

The students filed in, taking their seats.

Sho found a spot near the middle, Hinata beside him.

Across the room, Naruto sat alone, his eyes fixed on the floor.

Iruka-sensei and Mizuki-sensei stood at the front of the room, their expressions serious.

“Welcome to the graduation exam,” Iruka announced.

“You will each be called up individually to demonstrate the three basic techniques: Transformation, Substitution, and Clone.

You must perform each technique to an acceptable standard to pass.”

Mizuki stepped forward, his voice carrying across the room.

“We will begin with the Transformation Technique.

You will be asked to transform into a specific target.

Precision and stability are key.”

Sho felt his stomach tighten.

‘I can do this.

I’ve practiced.

I’m ready.’

<><>

The examinations began.

One by one, students were called to the front.

Some performed flawlessly.

Others stumbled, barely managing to complete the techniques.

Sasuke Uchiha was called early.

He walked to the front with the confident stride of someone who had never doubted himself for a moment.

“Transformation Technique,” Iruka instructed.

“Transform into me.”

Sasuke made the hand seals, his movements fluid and precise.

In a puff of smoke, a replica of Iruka stood in his place.

The transformation was flawless…down to the scar on Iruka’s nose.

The room erupted in murmurs of admiration.

Sho saw the girls’ eyes go wide, their faces flushing with admiration.

‘He’s perfect,’ Sho thought, a pang of envy twisting in his chest.

‘He doesn’t even have to try.’

It was the same look Neji got from the females in the clan.

The same admiration, the same adoration.

The same certainty that he was special, destined for greatness.

No one had ever looked at Sho that way.

Not once.

He pushed the thought aside, forcing himself to focus.

‘I’m not here to compare myself to Sasuke.

I’m here to pass the exam…nothing else matters.’

There will be time for competition in the future.

Sasuke completed the Substitution and Clone techniques with equal perfection.

Iruka nodded, a rare smile on his face.

“Pass.

Congratulations.”

<><>

More students went by.

Sakura performed admirably, her technique clean and precise.

Ino was equally skilled, her transformation holding for nearly two minutes.

Kiba was loud and brash, but his techniques were solid, so he also passed.

And then it was Hinata’s turn.

Sho watched his sister step forward, her hands trembling slightly.

She was nervous…he could see it in the set of her shoulders, the way she bit her lower lip.

‘You can do this, Hinata.

I know you can.’

Mizuki-sensei gave her the instructions.

She took a breath, made the hand seals, and transformed into a perfect copy of Iruka-sensei.

The technique held firm.

Her substitution was smooth, her clone stable.

Iruka nodded, his expression warm.

“Excellent work, Hinata.

Pass.”

Hinata let out a breath, relief flooding her face.

She caught Sho’s eye as she walked back to her seat, a small smile on her lips.

‘She did it.

I’m so proud of her.’

<><>

“Hyuga Shokuhi.

Please come forward.”

Sho’s heart seized.

His legs felt like lead as he walked to the front of the room.

‘This is it.

This is what I’ve been training for.’

He could feel the eyes of his classmates on him.

Some curious.

Some dismissive.

Some simply waiting to see him fail.

Mizuki-sensei studied him with an unreadable expression.

“Begin with the Transformation Technique.

Transform into me.”

Sho took a breath, steadying himself.

‘I can do this.

I’ve practiced this a hundred times.’

He was about to make the hand seals when a sudden flash of red appeared in his vision.

[Warning: Strong Bloodlust Detected]

Sho blinked, his hands freezing mid-seal.

The words were stark and urgent, displayed in deep crimson.

‘Bloodlust?!’

His heart lurched.

His eyes darted around the room, searching for the source.

Was someone going to attack?

Here?

In the middle of the exam?

He had no mortal enemies, as far as he knew.

He’d made some rivals, certainly, like Neji or Hanabi, but nothing that would warrant assassination.

‘Who would want to kill me?’

Then he noticed it.

Mizuki-sensei’s eyes.

They weren’t looking at Sho with the professional detachment of an examiner.

They were looking at something past him.

At someone behind him.

Sho turned his head slowly, following the teacher’s gaze.

His eyes found Naruto, who was walking toward the front of the room to speak with Iruka-sensei.

His friend looked nervous, his shoulders hunched, his eyes downcast.

But it was Mizuki’s expression that made Sho’s blood run cold.

The teacher’s eyes held a deep, simmering hatred.

It wasn’t the casual contempt of someone who disliked a troublesome student.

It was something darker.

Something personal.

Something that seemed to burn with years of accumulated resentment.

‘He hates Naruto.

He truly hates him.’

Sho knew that many of the villagers disliked Naruto, but he never understood why.

But he’d never seen it so clearly before.

Never seen the hatred so nakedly displayed as now.

“Why does he hate him so much?” Sho muttered under his breath.

“Hyuga-san.” Mizuki’s voice cut through his thoughts.

“Are you ready?

We don’t have all day.”

Sho turned back, his heart still pounding.

The hatred in Mizuki’s eyes was gone now, replaced by the calm professionalism of an examiner.

But Sho had seen it.

He couldn’t unsee it.

‘What was that?

Why did the system warn me?’

He took a step back, unconsciously putting distance between himself and the teacher.

Mizuki frowned, his eyes narrowing slightly.

“This is not the time to get distracted, Hyuga-san.

I need you to perform the Transformation Technique.

Now.”

“Right.

Sorry.” Sho forced himself to focus.

‘I can’t afford to fail.

There’s too much at stake.’

He took a breath, forcing the unease from his mind.

He could worry about Mizuki later.

Right now, he needed to pass.

“Henge!”

A puff of smoke.

When it cleared, a copy of Mizuki stood in his place.

The transformation wasn’t perfect…the hair was slightly off, the proportions a little skewed.

But it was stable.

Recognizable.

Mizuki circled him, his eyes appraising.

“Not perfect.

But acceptable.” He nodded.

“Pass.

Move on to the Substitution Technique.”

Sho’s heart soared.

‘One down.

Two to go.’

He turned to the log that had been placed nearby.

Substitution was his strongest technique, and he’d practiced it obsessively.

‘Focus.

Just focus on the technique.’

He made the hand seals, focused his chakra, and activated the technique.

One moment he was standing in front of Mizuki.

The next, he was beside the log, his arms crossed, a smirk on his face.

The room erupted in murmurs.

Even Iruka looked surprised.

“Excellent,” Mizuki said, his voice carrying a hint of genuine surprise.

“Your timing was perfect.

Pass.”

Sho felt a surge of confidence.

‘One more.

Just one more.’

“Clone Technique,” Mizuki instructed.

“Create a single perfect clone and maintain it for one minute.”

Sho took a breath, forcing himself to calm down.

‘This is the hardest one.

But I’ve practiced.

I can do this.’

He made the hand seals and released his chakra.

“Bunshin!”

A puff of smoke.

And there, standing beside him, was a perfect copy of himself.

Sho held his breath, waiting.

The clone stood motionless, its form solid and stable.

Five seconds.

Ten seconds.

Twenty.

‘Keep going.

Just a little longer.’

Thirty seconds.

Forty.

Fifty.

The clone remained stable, its form unwavering.

Fifty-five seconds.

Fifty-eight.

Sixty.

Mizuki nodded.

“Excellent work, Hyuga-san.”

Sho felt the tension drain from his body.

‘I passed.

I actually passed.’

Mizuki-sensei stepped forward, his expression thoughtful.

“I have to say, Hyuga-san, this is quite impressive.

A few months ago, you could barely perform the leaf exercise without collapsing.

And now you’re creating stable clones?.

What is your secret?”

Sho felt a prickle of unease.

The system’s warning still echoed in his mind.

He looked at Mizuki, trying to see past the friendly facade.

There was something in the teacher’s eyes.

Something cold.

Something calculating.

‘He’s trying to figure me out.

He wants to know my secret.’

“I recovered from my illness,” Sho said carefully, his voice steady despite his racing heart.

“And I’ve been training a lot since then.”

“Mmm?…

I see.” Mizuki’s eyes lingered on him for a moment longer than comfortable.

“Well, congratulations.

You’ve passed.”

He reached for a headband on the nearby table, the metal plate gleaming in the light.

“Welcome to the ranks of Konoha’s genin, Hyuga Shokuhi.”

Sho took the headband, his hands trembling slightly.

It was real.

He was holding the proof of his success.

‘I did it.

I actually did it.’

The system began to display a flurry of notifications in his vision.

But before he could examine them, a voice cut through the room.

“Come on!

Give me another chance!

I can do it right!”

Sho turned, his attention snapping to the commotion.

Naruto was standing in the center of the room, his face red, his fists clenched at his sides.

Iruka-sensei stood before him, his expression pained.

“I’m sorry, Naruto,” Iruka said, his voice heavy with regret.

“You had three chances, and you couldn’t perform the Clone Technique to an acceptable level.

You’ve failed the exam.”

Sho’s blood went cold.

‘Naruto…

failed?’

He watched his friend’s face crumble.

The anger drained away, replaced by something far worse: defeat.

Acceptance.

“But I can do it!” Naruto insisted, his voice cracking.

“Just give me one more chance!

I swear I can do it this time!”

“I’m sorry,” Iruka repeated.

“The exam is over.

You’ll have to try again next year.”

The words hung in the air.

Naruto stood frozen, his shoulders slumped, his eyes fixed on the floor.

He looked so small, so broken.

And then Sho saw something else.

Movement at the edge of his vision.

Mizuki was watching Naruto too.

And on his face was a smile.

A cold, satisfied smile that made Sho’s stomach turn.

‘He’s happy.

He’s happy Naruto failed.’

Sho’s hands clenched into fists at his sides.

‘What is wrong with him?

What does he have against Naruto?’

“I…” Naruto’s voice was barely a whisper.

“I…”

He didn’t finish the sentence.

He turned and fled the room, his footsteps echoing in the sudden silence.

Sho took a step after him, but Hinata caught his arm.

“Sho-kun…

let him go.

He needs some time.”

Sho hesitated, his heart aching.

“But…”

“He’ll be okay.” Hinata’s voice was gentle.

“He’s strong.

He’ll find his way.”

Sho looked at the door where Naruto had disappeared, then back at the headband in his hands.

‘I passed.

I became a genin.

But my best friend…’

The joy of his victory felt hollow now.

And somewhere in the back of his mind, the image of Mizuki’s cold smile lingered.

‘Something is wrong.

Something is very wrong.’
