Chapter 02: The Second Chance
Sho blinked a few times, but the message remained in place.
[Your soul has successfully integrated with the memories of your previous life.
In recognition of your perseverance, you have been granted access to the Second Chance System.
Would you like to proceed with initialization?…]
He moved his head from side to side, and the words seemed to follow his eyes, always remaining at the center.
Sho was so distracted by this bizarre message that it took him a long moment to realize something more important.
The fever was gone, and his pain was gone as well;
As he lay in his futon, staring at the ceiling, for the first time in his entire existence, he felt like his head was clear.
There was no pressure, no headaches.
No constant thrum of something wrong behind his eyes.
He took a breath.
Then another.
His lungs expanded easily.
There was no rattle, no cough, no burning sensation in his chest.
It felt like a dream.
“Impossible…”
He sat up slowly, waiting for the wave of dizziness that always came when he moved too quickly.
It didn’t come.
He waited for the weakness in his limbs, the trembling in his hands, the exhaustion that had been his constant companion for eleven years.
It didn’t come.
He looked down at his hands.
At his small paled fingers that had never been strong enough to grip anything properly.
But for the first time, they didnt shake.
“What…
what happened?” His voice came out as a whisper.
Raw from the fever, but steady.
Stronger than it had ever been.
His attention then shifted to the message still displayed before him.
“Is this the reason for my recovery?…this…what is this?” It reminded him of the screens he saw in those memories, but this was not on any screen…he could see the letters floating in the air.
He moved his hand and tried to touch them, but his hand went through them as if they were something intangible.
He very much wanted to call for the healer to return and ask if he could see them too, but was afraid of being taken for someone who had gone insane.
‘But maybe I have gone insane…’ He considered the possibility.
No matter how many times he blinked, the words remained.
“Could this be a genjutsu then?.” He reached up to touch his forehead, feeling for the familiar telltale signs of an illusion.
Nothing.
His chakra was flowing normally…better than normally.
For the first time, he could actually feel it moving through his veins, unhindered by the constriction that had plagued him his entire life.
Suddenly, a new line appeared.
[If you would like to proceed with the initialization, please say the word “Status” out loud.]
“…status?.”
The screen changed immediately.
Words and numbers began to be displayed before him.

Health Assessment (Active)
System Message: Your body is severely deficient.
Immediate action required.
Otherwise, your life expectancy is approximately 11 months.
Sho stared at the numbers.
He understood what he was seeing…this system had given him a clear, clinical assessment of his condition.
It was like one of those video games that the young man from the memories used to play while lying in his bed.
This had to be a numerical representation of his physical body…and it was not looking good.
His stats were half of what they should be.
His body was a wreck.
He was, by any objective measure, a complete failure.
Just like everyone had told him his entire life.
But he was no longer feeling hopeless…if this system could show him his stats, then there must be something he can do about it.
“These…
these can change?” He gestured at the floating screen, not sure how to interact with it.
“These numbers can go up?”
The System didn’t respond to his question, but when his finger touched the word “Strength” displayed in the menu…another smaller menu appeared before it.
[ Strength: the internal capacity to exert force or withstand strain.
It can be increased through the constant repetition of physical training.]
“Oh…I guess it makes sense.” If he did exercise, he would become stronger.
He already knew that.
And if he hadn’t always been sick, he would have done that already.
He felt slightly bitter just by thinking about it.
But then…something else appeared before him.
This time, the message was inside a red box and was blinking.
[Unique Quest: Health Assessment
Objective: Understand your condition and identify your deficiencies.
To complete this quest, you must:
Examine your physical state
Identify your primary weaknesses
Accept your status
Reward: 5 Stat Points, 100 Experience Points
Do you accept this quest?]
Sho didn’t hesitate.
“Yes.
I accept.”
The screen shimmered, and he felt something shift inside him.
A warmth spread through his chest, settling into his core.
[Quest accepted.
Please begin assessment.]
He pushed himself to his feet, expecting the familiar wave of dizziness.
It didn’t come.
He cautiously waited for a bit, and when the room remained steady, he took a step forward.
Then another.
He walked to the window, looking out at the Hyuga compound.
The night was especially dark, as the moon was hidden behind clouds.
The clan’s buildings stretched out below him, silent and imposing.
He had been lying in that bed for…
how long?
Since morning?
Since yesterday?
He didn’t know.
The fever had been so consuming that he’d lost all track of time.
But now…
Now he was standing, and without help or support.
Without his body threatening to collapse beneath him.
Despite all those negative effects the system had mentioned…he had never felt better than now.
He looked down at his hands again.
They were still small and pale.
Still the hands of a sickly child.
But they were his.
And for the first time, they felt like they could actually do something.
“Okay.” He took a breath.
“Let’s do this.
Let’s see what I can actually do.” He felt refreshed and full of energy…at least compared to the usual.
<><>
The next two hours were spent exploring the limits of his new condition.
He started with basic exercises…the kind he’d always failed at in the academy.
“Let’s try ten push-ups.”
He collapsed after three, gasping, but he’d done three.
Before the fever, he could barely manage one.
“Twenty sit-ups.”
He did five before his legs screamed in protest.
“A minute of planking.”
He lasted seven seconds.
But each failure was accompanied by a system notification, and each notification gave him something precious: information.
[Physical assessment complete.
Primary weaknesses identified:
Muscular atrophy due to prolonged inactivity
Chakra vein constriction limiting energy flow
Chronic fatigue syndrome
Brittle bone density
Reduced lung capacity
Recommendation: Focus on Vitality and Chakra Control during initial stat allocation.
Quest complete.
Reward: 5 Stat Points, 100 Experience]
Sho sat on the floor of his room, breathing heavily, sweat dripping down his face.
He’d pushed himself harder than he ever had in his life, and while he was exhausted, it wasn’t the bone-deep, soul-crushing exhaustion that had defined his existence.
It was the exhaustion of progress.
The system notification shimmered before him, and he felt the stat points settle into his awareness.
Five points.
He could allocate them anywhere.
He didn’t hesitate.
“Two points to Vitality,” he said aloud.
“Two points to Chakra Control.
One point to Strength.”
Immediately, he felt the change.
It was subtle…like the difference between breathing through a straw and breathing through your nose.
The air in his lungs felt deeper.
The weakness in his limbs felt…
less.
Not gone.
Not even close to gone.
But less.
His new stat block appeared before him.
[Stats:
Strength: 3
Agility: 3
Vitality: 3
Chakra Capacity: 1
Chakra Control: 4
Perception: 6]
It wasn’t much.
He was still far below where he should be.
But for the first time, he was moving in the right direction.
And he immediately felt the changes in his body.
Mainly in his vitality, which used to be at one.
He now felt like he could actually complete those ten push-ups without collapsing.
“Thank you!.” The words slipped out before he could stop them.
He felt foolish, thanking a floating screen, but he meant it.
“Thank you for this second chance.”
The system didnt respond, but it didnt matter.
He now knew that this was real and not just something out of his imagination.
‘Could this be a gift from some god?…did someone up there take pity on me?.’ He didn’t have the answer to that, and the system didn’t seem sentient enough to answer his questions, but he hoped to learn the answer one day…as he continued moving forward.
The night stretched on, but Sho couldn’t sleep.
His body was tired, yes, but his mind was racing.
He spent hours exploring the system, understanding its features, memorizing its functions.
The system had three main components:
Stats: The core attributes that defined his physical and spiritual condition.
Each point of improvement would be hard-won, but the progress was tangible.
Skills: Abilities he could learn and improve through training.
Right now, he had none.
But the system indicated that as he trained, skills would unlock.
Quests: Objectives that would guide his growth.
Some were simple, like physical training milestones.
Others were more complex.
The system claimed that “hidden” quests could unlock under special circumstances.
He spent a long time staring at one particular aspect of the system.
Title: The Eclipsed Spare
This was the title the system had given him.
It was not inaccurate, but still hurt his feelings a little bit.
“No…I can change that now.
I’m not going to be forgotten,” he said softly.
“I’m going to make them see that I can be much more than just the spare heir…the useless one that no one expects anything from.
”
The system didn’t respond.
It didn’t need to.

The morning arrived before he realized.
Sho had fallen asleep at some point, slumped against the wall of his room.
He woke to the first rays of sunlight streaming through the window, and for a moment, he thought everything had been a dream caused by the fever.
The System, the memories from a previous life…
But then he saw the floating screen, patiently waiting for his attention.
[New quest available.
Quest: First Steps
Objective: Run one lap around the Academy track without stopping.
Reward: +1 Vitality, +1 Endurance Skill
Do you accept?]
He smiled.
It felt strange, smiling.
He couldn’t remember the last time he’d genuinely smiled.
“Yes,” he said.
“I accept.”
