“You’d better give it your all!”
“And whatever you do, don’t get yourself killed, that teacher of yours genuinely does not care whether you live or die.”
“Ino, thank you!”
Sakura threw her arms around Ino, genuinely moved.
In her most helpless moments as a child, it had always been Ino who showed up and helped her find her confidence again.
This moment was no different, even if the way it happened was a little different.
“What are you thanking me for?”
“I just didn’t want to win too easily.”
“Alright!”
“Stop your blubbering!”
“Don’t make me lose respect for you!”
Ino’s expression went a little awkward, but she kept up her tough front all the same.
Sakura wiped her tears and turned to Ino with a smile.
“I won’t anymore!”
“From now on, I won’t cry at the drop of a hat!”
Just like Ino said, she had dared to stake her life for him.
What did a little humiliation matter next to that?
“Ino, tell me about our teacher.”
“He said his name is Tiange Hyūga.
Do you all already know him?”
Ino gave a solemn nod and spoke with complete seriousness.
“Sakura, meeting him — you could call it your good fortune, or your greatest misfortune.”
“He’s incredibly strong.
My father said the Hokage herself is no match for him.”
Ino whispered that last part directly into Sakura’s ear, as though she were afraid of being overheard.
“He’s…
that strong?”
Sakura’s pupils shrank.
That teacher who looked absurdly young, was he really that monstrous?
Ino nodded and kept going.
“There are almost no stories about him circulating in Konoha, not because they aren’t explosive enough, but because no one dares talk about them.”
“The first is from nine years ago.
The one he told you about today.”
“To protect his younger brother, he came within a breath of slaughtering the entire main branch of his own clan.”
“The second was the same year, to protect his father, he fought the Hokage directly.”
“Right in front of her, he cut off the arms of two Elders, one after another.”
“The third was just a couple of days ago.
Every major clan knows this one.”
“He had barely returned to Konoha before he wiped out an Elder’s entire faction and killed the Elder himself.”
“The Hokage knows.
And she said nothing — because she didn’t dare.”
“My father said that before he left, he threatened her outright.
He was hoping she’d make a move.
She chose not to.”
“All of this is kept secret among the major clans.
Don’t go telling other people.”
Ino had chosen every word carefully.
Everyone with any standing knew these things, yet every clan had warned their members not to breathe a word of it carelessly.
Sakura was genuinely shaken.
That teacher of hers truly had no regard for any law or authority.
“He’s so young — how can he be that strong?”
“That’s what a genius is, I suppose.”
“I heard that when he was at the ninja academy, he graduated after just one year.
Everyone could only look up at him.”
“And it wasn’t just him, he has a younger brother, one grade above us, who was the undisputed number one of his time.”
“When I say you’re lucky, I mean it.
Following him, you will grow strong very quickly.”
“Even if the process is painful.
Grueling.
Even if it puts you face to face with life and death.”
“But as long as you can hold on, your improvement will be beyond anything you could have imagined.”
“The misfortune is the same thing.
He is cold, aside from his own family, other people barely register as lives to him.”
“Make him unhappy, and he might cut you down on the spot.”
“You should have already seen that for yourselves today.”
Sakura nodded over and over.
Even now, just thinking about it, her face was still a little pale.
“Since he said he absolutely won’t step in as long as the enemies you face don’t exceed your level,”
“That is the absolute truth.
He genuinely does not care whether you live or die.”
“You have to face it yourselves.
Sakura, I mean this, this is your chance.”
“But you have to make up your mind.
You need the resolve to die if it comes to that.”
“As long as you have that resolve, you will absolutely grow through this.”
“I know you’ve never been very confident, no clan, no access to good resources.
I’ve always known.”
“But Sakura, this time?
Every single one of us with our so-called clans doesn’t amount to anything in his eyes.”
“Honestly, my father is afraid of him.
But if he had a choice, he would not hesitate for a single second to send me to train under him instead.”
Sakura looked at Ino.
The one friend she had had since childhood.
The girl who had looked out for her through all of it.
She knew exactly why Ino was saying all of this, she was afraid Sakura might choose to walk away.
“Ino, let’s make up.”
“When it comes to Sasuke, let’s compete fairly.”
“No more fighting over him.”
Ino blinked.
She looked at the hand Sakura was extending toward her, grabbed it, and smiled.
“Since when were we ever on bad terms?”
“Yeah.
Exactly.”
“We’ve always been fine.”
“Come on!”
“Let me treat you to a proper meal.
Your hard days start tomorrow, actually enjoying good food is about to get a lot harder.”
“Hey!
Ino, you’re jealous, aren’t you?”
“A bit rough is all, I’m not scared.
You’d better work hard yourself, or before you know it I’ll have surpassed you.”
“Like you said, my teacher is very strong.”
“Ha, then I’ll be waiting to watch you bloom.”
“For sure.
We’ll bloom together.
The most beautiful flowers.”
“Oh, right, Ino, how did you even find out about what happened to us today?”
“Ha.
Who do you think I am?
I’m Ino.”
The two of them walked off laughing, their voices fading into the distance.
Sakura had found her confidence again.
In the Uchiha clan district, Sasuke returned home and trained without stopping.
No hesitation.
Every waking moment, his mind was on one thing: getting stronger.
This was his chance, he understood that more clearly than anyone.
Because against Tiange Hyūga, that man hadn’t stood a single chance.
Not one.
He would not throw this away.
He set aside the arrogance that had always been part of him.
Whatever task he was given, he would carry it out with his life if he had to.
Compared to Sasuke and Sakura, one unshakably resolute, the other having come through real doubt, Naruto seemed almost cheerfully unaffected.
Tiange’s words had barely crossed his mind before he let them go entirely.
But toward that teacher, he was genuinely a little afraid.
In front of him, Naruto didn’t dare act up the way he usually would.
The next morning.
In front of the Hokage Tower, Sasuke spotted his two teammates.
“You’re both here.”
He glanced at Sakura.
The coldness in his face shifted, just slightly.
“I thought you might give up.”
“Good.”
Sakura met his gaze directly, the first time she had ever done that, and said with steady confidence:
“I will get stronger.”
“I won’t hold anyone back.
I’m staking my life on it.”
Sasuke looked at her.
It was the first time he had ever seen Sakura like this.
He gave a small nod.
“Good.
Until you catch up, I’ll do my best to protect you as your teammate.”
“Me too, me too!
Sakura, I’ll protect you too!”
On a rooftop not far away, Tiange Hyūga watched it all unfold.
He gave an almost imperceptible nod.
Then his figure flickered, and he was standing in front of all three of them.
“Good.”
“I hereby declare, Team 7 is officially formed.”
