“Mama!”

Nyra’s voice tore through the quiet evening as she rushed through the front door.

She had barely stepped inside when the scent of blood hit her.Full novel: NYRA : THE LAST BLOOD — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

Her entire body went still.

Eira stirred violently inside her.

‘Nyra’.

Eira called in her head

‘I know Eira’.

The scent was coming from the living room.

Ravenna and Aurelia had followed her through the door, and the moment they sensed it too, their expressions changed.

“Nyra…” Aurelia whispered.

Nyra didn’t answer.

She rounded the corner and stopped dead.

Mara was on the floor, one wolf stood over her and another was moving toward the doorway.

For half a second, nobody moved then Nyra’s instincts took over.

“Get away from her!”

The wolf turned.

Nyra charged at it, the first impact sent the wolf stumbling backward, and Ravenna immediately joined the fight.

Aurelia moved toward Mara, but the second wolf lunged before she could reach her.

“Watch out!”

Aurelia twisted away just in time.

Ravenna caught the wolf from the side, giving Aurelia enough time to recover.

The room erupted into chaos.

Nyra had never fought with this much anger before.

She wasn’t thinking about technique or anything else.

She was just thinking about Mara; Her mother, the woman who had raised her.

The woman who had been there through every fever, every bad day, every examination, every disappointment and every achievement.

The woman who had stood proudly in the crowd only hours ago and watched her graduate and now…

she was lying on the floor.

Nyra’s wolf surged forward faster.

Eira’s voice echoed inside her mind.

‘Don’t let them touch her again’.

Nyra moved.

The first wolf attacked, but she dodged beneath his strike and drove him backward.

Ravenna and Aurelia fought the second one together, moving with the coordination that came from three years of training side by side.

The first wolf recovered and charged again, Nyra met him head-on.

The fight lasted only a few more moments then silence fell.

The two attackers were down.

Nyra stood frozen, breathing heavily as she looked at them.

She only felt one thing: Fear.

“Mama!.”

She dropped beside Mara.

Ravenna and Aurelia immediately rushed over.

Mara’s eyes slowly opened.

“Nyra…”

“I’m here Mama.” Nyra took her hand.

“You’re going to be okay.”

Mara looked at her.

“Mama?”

“I’ve been waiting to tell you.”

Nyra frowned.

“Tell me what?”

Mara’s eyes moved toward the two fallen wolves.

“They weren’t here because of me.”

Nyra stared at her.

“They came for you.”

The words barely left Mara’s mouth before Nyra felt the world shift beneath her.

“What?”

Mara squeezed her hand weakly.

“I wanted to tell you after graduation.”

Nyra shook her head.

“Tell me what?”

“You deserve to know who you are.” Ravenna and Aurelia exchanged a confused glance.

Nyra stared at Mara.

“What do you mean, who I am?” Mara took a shaky breath.

“The life you’ve known… the life I’ve given you… it wasn’t the life you were born into.”

Nyra’s heart began pounding.

“Mama, you’re scaring me.”

“I’m sorry.”

Mara’s eyes filled with tears.

“But you have to know now.”

She reached beneath her clothes.

Her fingers trembled as she pulled out the old pendant.

Nyra stared at it.She had seen it before, many times actually but never like this.

Mara placed it carefully into Nyra’s palm.

“This belonged to your mother.” Nyra froze.

“My… mother?”

Mara nodded.

“The woman who gave birth to you.” Nyra stared at the pendant.

“Where is she?”

Mara looked into her eyes.

“She’s dead.”

The words struck harder than any blow.

Nyra couldn’t speak.

Mara continued.

“Your father is dead too.”

Ravenna covered her mouth.

Aurelia stood completely still.

Nyra shook her head.

“No.”

“Nyra-”

“No.”

She pulled her hand away.

“You told me my parents died before I could remember them.”

“They did.”

“Then why are you talking like there’s more?”

“Because there is.”

Mara’s voice cracked.

“Much more.”

Nyra stared at her.

“Who were they?”

Mara looked down at the pendant.

“Your father was the King.”

Nyra blinked.

“What?”

“Your mother was the Queen.”

Ravenna’s eyes widened.

Aurelia looked at Nyra as though she was seeing her for the first time.

Nyra simply stared at Mara.

“I don’t understand.”

“You were born into the royal bloodline. You were never an ordinary Omega.”

Nyra’s breath caught.

Mara continued before she could interrupt.

“The royal family you know from history wasn’t the beginning. Your parents came from an ancient bloodline that ruled long before the modern pack system became what it is today.”

She touched the pendant.

“Your ancestors were the first rulers of the werewolf world. They were called Lycans.”

Nyra looked at the pendant again.

“Their blood was different. Their abilities were different. And their power was something the council feared.”

“The council?”

Mara nodded.

“The council wanted control. Your parents stood in their way.”

Nyra’s fingers tightened around the pendant.

“What happened?”

Mara’s eyes filled with tears.

“They betrayed them.”

She swallowed.

“They killed your parents.”

Nyra felt something inside her snap.

“They… killed them?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because they wanted the throne. They wanted to rule.”

Mara’s voice grew weaker.

“And because they feared what your bloodline could become.”

Nyra stared at her.

“Then what happened to me?”

Mara looked directly into her eyes.

“You were just a baby.” Her voice trembled.

“The Beta found out what the council was planning. He tried to protect your parents, but he couldn’t stop them. After they were killed, the council came for you.”

Nyra’s eyes widened.

“Me?”

“Yes.”

“They knew I existed?”

“They knew there was a child.”

Mara took a shaky breath.

“But they didn’t know where you were.”

Nyra looked at the pendant.

“This…”

“Your mother put it around your neck when you were born. It was the only thing I was able to keep of her.”

Mara closed her eyes briefly.

“After your parents were killed, the Beta came to me with you.”

Nyra’s voice was barely audible.

“The Beta?”

“Yes. He gave you to me and told me to protect you with my life.”

Mara looked at her.

“So I ran.”

Nyra stared at the woman who had raised her.

“You raised me.”

“I did.”

“You knew all this?”

“Every day, for twenty years?”

Mara nodded.

“Every single day.”

Nyra’s eyes filled with tears.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“Because I wanted you to live.”

Mara reached for her hand again.

“I wanted you to go to university. I wanted you to have friends. I wanted you to laugh without looking over your shoulder. I wanted you to grow up without carrying the weight of a kingdom that no longer existed.”

Nyra couldn’t stop the tears now.

“You should have told me.”

“I know.”

“I trusted you.”

“I know.”

“You were my mother.”

Mara smiled through her tears.

“I still am.”

“Nyra, promise me something. Never transform into your wolf infront of anyone you don’t trust”

“Yes Mama, promise”

Nyra leaned forward and held her.

Mara wrapped her arms around her as tightly as she could.

For a few moments, everything else in the room seemed to have disappeared.

There was only a mother holding her daughter then Mara whispered,

“I’m sorry.”

Nyra shook her head.

“No.”

She held her tighter.

“Don’t say that.”

Mara’s breathing became weaker.

Nyra pulled back.

“Mama?”

Mara looked at her one last time.

“There is something else.” Nyra immediately leaned closer.

“What?”

Mara’s eyes moved toward the window.

“The wolves.”

Nyra followed her gaze.

“They weren’t random.”

“What do you mean?”

“They’ve been searching.”

“For me?”

Mara nodded.

“I think they’ve found you.”

Nyra’s blood ran cold.

“Who sent them?” Mara’s lips parted.

“The council.”

Her voice was barely more than a whisper.

“They know the King’s daughter survived.”

Nyra stared at her.

“Then why didn’t they kill me tonight?”

Mara looked at the pendant in Nyra’s hand.

“Maybe they didn’t realize who you were.”

“Or maybe…”

Her eyes slowly closed, “…they already do.”

“Mama?”

Nyra shook her gently.

“Mama?”

Mara didn’t respond.

“Please Mama.”

Nyra pressed her hand against Mara’s.

“Please wake up.”

“Mama?”

Ravenna’s eyes filled with tears.

Aurelia stepped closer.

“Nyra…”

“No.”

Nyra shook her head.

“She’s just tired.”

She looked at Mara.

“She’ll wake up.” Her voice cracked.

“She has to.”

Ravenna knelt beside her and wrapped her arms around her.

Nyra didn’t move.

She simply stared at Mara.

The woman who had protected her for twenty years was gone and with her went the last piece of the life Nyra thought she knew.

The days that followed were a blur.

There was a funeral, people came to offer condolences, there were people who also whispered about the attack.

Some called it a Rogue attack, others blamed territorial disputes.

Nyra listened to none of them.

She barely spoke or ate.

Ravenna and Aurelia stayed beside her.

They didn’t try to force her to move on because they understood how she was feeling.

One evening, several days after the funeral, Nyra sat alone in her room.

The pendant rested in her palm.

She studied the strange wolf symbol engraved into it.

For twenty years, she had thought she was an ordinary Omega.

Now she knew that every part of her life had been built around a lie meant to keep her alive.

She closed her eyes.

Eira stirred inside her.

‘We know who we are now’.

Nyra’s fingers tightened around the pendant.

“Yes”.

“What will we do?”

Nyra opened her eyes.

The grief was still there so was the pain but beneath it was Determination.

“They took everything from us.”

Eira listened on.

Nyra stood.

“They took my parents.” Her eyes hardened.

“They took Mama.”

She looked at herself in the mirror.

“And they took twenty years of my life.” She slipped the pendant around her neck, “But they’re not taking anything else.”

A knock sounded at the door.

Ravenna stepped inside,

“Nyra?”

Nyra turned.

Ravenna looked at her carefully.

“What are you thinking?”

Nyra took a slow breath.

“I’m going to find them.”

Aurelia appeared behind Ravenna.

“Find who?”

“The people who killed my parents.”

The two girls exchanged a look.

Nyra continued “And the people who killed Mara.”

Ravenna stepped forward.

“Then you’re not doing it alone.”

Nyra shook her head.

“I have to.”

“No!.” Ravenna’s voice was firm.

“We’ve been beside you for three years. We’re not stopping now.”

Aurelia nodded.

“Whatever happens next, we’re in it.”

Nyra looked between them.

For the first time since Mara’s death, a small smile touched her face.

“Thank you guys.”

Ravenna crossed her arms.

“Don’t thank us yet. You haven’t seen how annoying we’re about to become.”

Aurelia laughed.

Nyra actually smiled.

Far away, inside the council chamber, Marcus stood at the head of the table.

Several council members sat around him.

One of them looked nervous.

“The men haven’t returned.”

Marcus slowly raised his eyes.

“How long?”

“Several days now.”

Then another council member entered the room.

His face was pale, he bowed his head,

“We received a message before they disappeared.”

Marcus’s expression hardened.

“What message?”

The wolf swallowed.

“They found the house.”

Marcus leaned forward.

“And?”

“They found the woman.”

“Did they find the girl?”

The wolf hesitated.

Then he spoke.

“They believe so.”

Marcus went completely still.

For twenty years, they had believed the King’s bloodline had ended.

For twenty years, they had ruled without fear.

Marcus slowly stood.

“Find her at all cost and kill her!.”

The room went silent.

“Before she finds us.”

Somewhere far beyond the council’s walls, Nyra tightened her grip around the pendant that had once belonged to her mother.

She had spent twenty years believing she was an Omega.

Now she knew the truth.

She was the last heir of the Lycan bloodline the council had tried to erase and they had just made one very dangerous mistake; They have given her a reason to come looking for them.
