The walk into Zone 2 never got any easier.

We had spent the last four days crossing this border, scouting the perimeter, and mapping the immediate threats.

Yet, every single time we passed the invisible line separating the outer ring from the inner depths, the “Atmospheric Wall” hit exactly the same way.Full novel: One Piece: Digivolving Destiny — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

It wasn’t a shift in temperature, it was an oppressive, physical weight that settled directly onto your lungs and spine.

It felt like walking into a sealed room where the air was entirely composed of someone else’s hostile, vibrating intent.

“Day four, and the air is still actively trying to suffocate us,” I muttered, rolling my shoulders against the unseen pressure.

“You’d think the island would get used to our smell by now.”

“It doesn’t care,” Gammamon grumbled, walking low to the ground.

“Every time we cross over, it feels exactly like the first time.

It’s like the island is just sitting on us, Victor.”

“Just keep your guard up,” I whispered, the sarcasm bleeding out of my voice.

We were a mile past the border, navigating a patch of strange, silver-barked trees, when we heard the heavy, rhythmic thud of a large animal approaching.

We ducked behind the sprawling, moss-covered roots of an ancient cedar.

A massive, armored beast that looked like a cross between an ankylosaurus and a boar lumbered into the clearing.

It was easily a top-tier Zone 3 predator, venturing too far out of its depth.

It sniffed the air, completely ignoring the large, innocuous-looking puddle of rainwater sitting directly in its path.

As the beast’s heavy foot stepped into the “water,” the puddle shivered.

In a fraction of a second, the liquid mercury surface erupted into a dense forest of needle-sharp spikes, each one a foot long and polished to a terrifying, metallic black.

The Quicksilver Slime.

The spikes didn’t just pierce the beast’s thick armor, they slid through the plating like it was wet paper.

The beast didn’t even have time to scream before the metallic slime rapidly expanded, wrapping around its legs and dragging its heavy, twitching body down into the earth.

“Right,” I breathed, my heart hammering a frantic rhythm.

“Detour.

Now.”

We scrambled backward in total silence, taking a sharp eastern route through a dense thicket of giant ferns.

But in Zone 2, avoiding one nightmare usually meant walking into another.

As we pushed through the foliage, the air above us suddenly warped with a high-frequency hum that made my teeth ache.

We crouched low, peering up into the canopy.

Fifty feet above, the Silken Widow-Maker was engaged in a brutal, high-stakes war of attrition with an Echo-Bat.

It wasn’t a brawl, it was a lethal game of three-dimensional chess played at blinding speed.

The spider hung suspended between two massive redwood trunks, its body nearly invisible against the bark.

But the bat wasn’t using its eyes.

It let out a rapid series of sonic pulses, physical ripples that distorted the air, mapping out the nearly invisible, Haki-coated threads the spider had spun across the gap.

The bat banked sharply, its wings taking on a dark, metallic sheen.

It dove like a missile, intentionally aiming for a cluster of threads.

But the spider had already anticipated the trajectory.

Using Observation Haki, the Widow-Maker didn’t try to reinforce the web, it released the tension on the left side entirely.

The bat’s Haki-hardened wing sliced through empty air, throwing its balance off by a fraction of an inch.

In that microsecond of imbalance, the spider twitched its two front legs.

The slack threads snapped taut, transforming into a razor-sharp net that plummeted toward the bat’s back.

The bat, however, was already reacting to a future it had sensed.

It didn’t try to dodge.

Instead, it expelled a concussive sonic blast directly downward, using the kinetic recoil to launch itself straight up, narrowly slipping through a gap in the falling net.

As it ascended, the bat fired a concentrated sonic spear from its mouth, aimed directly at the tree bark where the spider rested.

But the spider wasn’t there.

It had already dropped into a free-fall the moment the bat opened its jaws.

As the sonic spear shattered the redwood’s trunk, sending massive splinters raining down like shrapnel, the spider fired two thick anchor lines to the adjacent trees.

Using its own falling momentum, the spider violently yanked the threads, using the sheer tensile strength to pull the two massive trees down toward the center of the clearing.

The bat shrieked, caught in the collapsing canopy.

The environment itself was being weaponized.

Massive branches and thousands of pounds of timber crashed together in mid-air, the shockwaves of the destruction tearing the surrounding foliage to shreds.

“We need to move,” I yelled over the deafening roar of collapsing wood, shielding my face as debris rained down on us.

“The whole grid is coming down!”

We bolted, leaving the high-IQ predators to their localized apocalypse, and sprinted toward our true destination.

We reached the edge of the crater an hour later.

It was a massive, bowl-shaped depression in the earth, the trees around the rim twisted and stunted by years of gravitational abuse.

I stepped behind a thick cluster of brush and tapped the black disk at my hip.

I didn’t speak.

I simply willed the energy forward.

In a series of silent, green flashes, the full roster materialized around us, the Sonic Tiger, the Exploding-Antler Stag, the Phase-Wolf, the Silk-Spider, the Phoenix-Peacock HoHo, and the Hummingbird.

I looked at them and gave a sharp, downward hand signal.

The clones immediately scattered, sinking into the dense undergrowth and shadows around the crater’s rim, completely motionless.

They had no heartbeat and no biological Will, they were the perfect invisible vanguard.

I turned to Gammamon and nodded.

He raised his claws, and I channeled my Fa-Jin reserves into the Digivice.

A brilliant explosion of crimson light swallowed him, the heat singing the grass.

When the light faded, BetelGammamon stood in his place.

His red scales shimmered like armor, his fists already smoking, and his eyes locked onto the center of the crater.

We stepped over the rim together.

The moment we crossed the threshold, the Gravity Well hit us.

It wasn’t an attack, it was simply the passive pressure of the beast residing within.

My boots sank an inch into the packed dirt, the Jade Wings suddenly feeling like they were forged from solid lead.

In the center of the crater sat the Gravity-Crag Gorilla.

Its massive, obsidian-plated body was relaxed, casually peeling a giant, thick-skinned fruit with its arms.

It slowly turned its head to look at us.

Its eyes were a dull, predatory gold.

It didn’t roar.

It just flexed.

CRACK.

The gravity doubled.

I was forced into a half-crouch, my bones groaning in protest as the air turned to syrup.

“Now!” I shouted, funneling Fa-Jin into my legs to fight the pressure.

BetelGammamon exploded forward.

He bypassed the crushing weight with Soru, blurring out of existence and leaving a violent trail of fire in his wake.

He reappeared directly inside the Gorilla’s immense guard, launching a blistering Muay Thai combination.

Left hook, right cross, rising knee each strike coated in roaring digital flames.

The Gorilla didn’t even drop its fruit.

It casually raised its left arm, taking the flaming knee directly against its obsidian forearm.

The sound was like a sledgehammer striking a vault door.

BetelGammamon didn’t pause.

Using the Gorilla’s arm as a springboard, he backflipped, snapping both legs out to unleash a point-blank Fire Rankyaku.

The flaming crescent of compressed air slammed into the Gorilla’s chest, detonating in a shockwave of heat and force.

The titan took a half-step back, the obsidian plates lightly scorched, and finally dropped its meal.

Simultaneously, I used Soru to blur toward the beast’s right flank.

I willed the Jade Wings into a pair of wickedly curved trench knives.

The Gorilla noticed, swinging its massive upper-right arm in a sweeping backhand that would have reduced me to red mist.

I triggered Kami-e, letting my entire body go limp.

I bent backward, parallel to the earth, the wind from the passing fist tearing a gash above my cheek.

Using the momentum of my unnatural dodge, I planted one hand on the dirt and fired a concentrated Fa-Jin beam from my blade directly into the Gorilla’s exposed knee joint.

The beast grunted, its leg buckling slightly.

Mid-spin, I shifted my right trench knife into a rope-dart, telekinetically whipping the black chain forward.

The jade blade bit deep into the Gorilla’s cheek, drawing a thick line of dark, heavy blood.

The Gorilla let out a sound like grinding tectonic plates.

It planted its feet, and the gravity shifted from a passive weight to a targeted pull.

I felt myself being dragged toward its massive legs.

I shifted my blades into twin longswords and braced myself.

The Gorilla unleashed a flurry of strikes with its arms.

It was a terrifying, suffocating avalanche of violence.

I parried a downward smash with crossed blades, the force fracturing my left wrist instantly.

BetelGammamon dove in to relieve the pressure, his fists flying in a blur of flaming jabs.

For thirty grueling seconds, we fought perfectly in sync.

BetelGammamon used Geppo to bound around the Gorilla’s head, raining down “Betel Flame!” fireballs to blind it, while I slid between its legs, using my chains to telekinetically bind its lower left ankle to its right wrist.

I whipped the chain taut.

“Got you!” I spat, blood leaking from my nose due to the atmospheric pressure.

The Gorilla simply stopped moving.

Its golden eyes narrowed, locking directly onto me.

A dark, metallic-purple sheen instantly coated all four of its massive arms, rippling up to its shoulders.

Armament Haki.

The Gorilla casually flexed its bound wrist and ankle.

The telekinetic strain on my chain was so absolute that I was physically yanked off my feet, flying directly toward its upper right fist.

“Victor!” BetelGammamon roared, dropping from the sky with a flaming Shigan aimed squarely at the Gorilla’s neck to intercept.

The fiery, compressed-air finger strike hit the Gorilla’s throat, and simply extinguished against the purple-black Haki barrier.

The beast didn’t even blink.

With terrifying, fluid speed, its left hand snapped up, catching BetelGammamon out of the air by the ribcage.

I heard the sickening crunch of BetelGammamon’s ribs shattering as the Gorilla slammed him into the crater floor.

The impact sent a tremor through the earth, snuffing out his crimson aura instantly.

At the exact same moment, the Gorilla’s fist met me mid-air.

I barely had time to shift the Jade Wings into a massive tower shield.

The Haki-infused punch struck the jade.

The alchemical stone held, but the kinetic force bypassed the shield entirely, ripping through my right arm and dislocating my shoulder with a deafening pop.

I was launched fifty feet backward, skipping across the dirt like a stone on water, coughing up a mouthful of blood as I finally tumbled to a halt.

I struggled to my knees, my right arm hanging uselessly.

The Gorilla stepped off BetelGammamon’s broken body and turned its full attention to me.

It clapped its Haki-blackened hands together.

The gravity didn’t just increase, the world collapsed.

I hit the ground face-first, the air forced from my lungs in a violent, agonizing rush.

The dirt beneath me instantly compacted into stone-hard clay.

I tried to push up, to funnel Fa-Jin into my good arm, but my muscles wouldn’t respond.

It felt as though an actual mountain had been dropped squarely onto my spine.

I could hear my ribs cracking, splintering inward under the invisible strain.

Ten feet away, BetelGammamon was pinned flat on his back, gasping wetly, his claws digging uselessly into the dirt.

The Gorilla walked toward us, the sheer weight of its presence suffocating.

It stood over us, blotting out the sun.

It raised its massive fists, the metallic-purple Haki gleaming with absolute, lethal intent.

It was going to turn us into a smear on the ground.

Move, my brain screamed, panic drowning out logic.

Move!

But my body was completely paralyzed.

The fear was a cold, absolute void in my chest.

I looked at BetelGammamon.

He looked back at me, his yellow eyes wide, blood pooling at the corner of his mouth.

This was the end.

We had flown too close to the sun.

We were going to die in the dirt, just another meal in the food chain.

But from the very bottom of that terror, a different sensation sparked.

It wasn’t the analytical mind of a survivor, it was the raw, primal, blood-deep refusal of the “D”.

A violent, roaring rejection of submission.

I felt the exact same defiance echoing through my digital bond with BetelGammamon.

We weren’t going to bow.

In the exact millisecond the Gorilla’s fists began to descend, something inside us shattered.

A concussive, invisible wave of sheer, unadulterated Will erupted from both of us simultaneously.

The air distorted violently, not from gravity, but from the sudden, cataclysmic burst of Conqueror’s Haki.

The Gorilla’s eyes widened in profound shock as the invisible wave hit it, freezing its descent for a vital fraction of a second.

And in that moment of absolute clarity, the invisible pressure forcing us down met a resistance from within.

My skin, my blood, the very air around my remaining good fist suddenly felt impossibly dense.

A dark, liquid-black sheen began to flicker across my knuckles, and mirrored perfectly across BetelGammamon’s surviving claws the undeniable, metallic manifestation of Armament.

The rules of the island had just changed.
