The neuro-medical pod’s AR feature was updated again.

It turned out this was the real reason why they stopped the AR simulation.

The neuro-medical pod received an update from the headquarters and took some time to update its system.Full novel: Orphan’s Guide to Surviving the Dark Web — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

Alice’s mind was initially still reeling from the earlier discovery and was currently absentmindedly staring at a cartoon movie on her tablet, but a conversation in low voices between the researchers and medical staff distracted her.

“Although the update is a little sudden, didn’t we still enjoy ourselves today?

Just think of it as the higher-ups giving us a chance to hold a team-building feast.”

The researchers, including Dr.

Smith, were not happy at all.

Test Subject C3 was their own test subject, yet they were not informed at all beforehand about the update tonight, only learning about it when the neuro-medical update finished receiving the data from the main brain.

“Did they say anything about what the update is about?”

The medical staff was also not sure.

“Apparently, when the headquarters saw the test subject’s stellar performance in the AR rehabilitation program, it caught the attention of several departments.”

“Especially the department in charge of artificial intelligence development, they said that the combination of AR simulation and neural interface had a lot of potential if they paired it with their newly developed AI,” the medical staff shrugged.

“It’s that department again!

Previously, they interfered in the second division’s VR project.

Now, they’re dipping their hands into our business again.

Why is the headquarters not saying anything?”

“This is an order from above, we can’t really stop it, so there’s no point arguing about it.

But they assured us that there will be absolutely no harm caused to the patient.

We can only relent after getting that guarantee.”

“I think they’re just being too domineering, looking down at us for being a minor facility,” a researcher murmured again in complaint.

Alice recalled that the neuro-medical pod was supposed to be currently under preparation for a future VR update.

From what Alice discerned from their words, this undertaking was supposed to be under the second division’s management, but the artificial intelligence department took over for some reason.

It seemed not everyone in this organization got along well.

The Neural-Link department and the artificial intelligence department had some history of disagreement between them.

That night, Alice spent the whole night inside the neuro-medical pod.

Lying down on the silicon bed, Alice was in a daze again.

“Perhaps your family members are still watching over you from above and praying for you, because you were soon adopted by Edmund and Emily, who tried their best to get you the best treatment possible, allowing you to get better and better.”

These were the exact words said by Dr.

Mark.

That was a really nice way of putting it.

Alice knew that Dr.

Mark added several layers of sugarcoating to his words, thinking she was still a child.

But in the end, it all boiled down to this—

Alice was just an orphan adopted by a pair of researchers, who then sent her to experimental trials.

She had no choice in the matter at all.

No matter how kind their supposed intentions were, that was what actually happened in reality.

Thinking from this perspective, it felt a little alarming and eerie.

Was she simply being too cynical?

Alice lacked too much knowledge and common sense; she could not make a proper judgment.

Alice missed her days of not bothering to think of such things at all.

She just had to kill whoever got in the way, monsters or humans alike, and life would still go on as normal…

Of course, Alice still did not regret being sent here in this peaceful era.

But still, to think the outside world was totally opposite of peaceful.

As expected, humans were prone to conflict.

As long as humans exist, there will be conflicts of interest, and whenever there are conflicts of interest, there will be chaos.

Alice comforted herself that at least the people around her were not malicious.

The experiments had only been very helpful to her, and she was not in any danger.

Her mind was in turmoil until Alice smelled the familiar scent again and saw the same starry sky…

…..

…..

Above the brightly shining neon lights of the sprawling cities in Country A, an aircraft flew smoothly through the skies, overlooking the world and the countless hardworking ants it contained.

“Well, they’re no different from ants, aren’t they?”

A man in a loose silk robe with his chest exposed sat languidly on a couch.

He took a glass of champagne offered by the bartender.

“Going around looking soulless, they don’t seem to know how to live.” He looked down at the view outside the glass window of the private jet.

“That’s why I really dislike going to the company.

I always get to see such unpleasant faces.”

The man sitting on the other side of the glass table laughed.

One of his arms was wrapped around a tall, stunning woman in a short and tight skirt, while another knelt on the floor.

“That’s the reason we hire presidents in the first place.

Let them handle the trivial tasks.”

The man in the loose robe sighed.

“What can I do?

The shareholders are causing me a headache right now.

It’s just a poorly made AR game.

Our business scope isn’t even in the gaming industry, so why make such a fuss about not having games connected to our BCI products?”

“My, my.

Space Link Corporation, huh?

They really like getting under your skin.”

“It’s a pity that old man hasn’t died yet.

Those little chicks of his would have been a piece of cake to take care of.”

“All right, enough with the serious stuff.

If you worry about every little thing, you won’t even have time to have fun with us on the island.

I even ordered some new dolls to play with.

You can let loose then.”

“New dolls?

How about the ones we had a couple of weeks ago?”

“They’re not very durable.

Last week, when my friends visited, they overdid it a little.”

Tony smiled and waved a hand dismissively.

“Forget them.

I already got new ones.

You should unwind and relax.

Take some time to enjoy life.

Betty, why don’t you sit with my dear friend?” He kissed the woman and smiled. New chapters come out on novelping.com first.

The woman stood up, her long, smooth legs gliding with every elegant step as she twirled toward the other side.

The man in the silk robe obliged and pulled the stunning woman onto his lap.

The woman straddled him, leaned forward, and pressed her plump chest against his very seductively.

“Now, baby, I finally get to have you for myself.

Tony has been safeguarding you and Janet for a while now.

How about I take care of you instead?” he whispered into her ear.

The woman playfully traced a circle on the man’s exposed chest, her painted lips smiling like a vixen.

The other man, Tony, said, “Says the Casanova.

You have a large group of models at your beck and call, and now you want to steal mine?”

“What a pity.

Tony doesn’t approve.

Then let’s enjoy ourselves tonight, shall we, Betty?” He held the woman’s chin and kissed her deeply.

Just when the heat in the lounge was about to burn—

At that moment, a phone began ringing.

The man in the silk robe, who had been kissing the woman passionately, paused at the ringtone.

It was the ringtone that specific contact had set up to play whenever they called him.

He groaned.

“What bad timing.

Betty, it seems you’ll have to wait a little longer.”

Then he looked up at Tony and excused himself.

“I’ll take the call first.

You go ahead and enjoy yourselves.

I’ll join you in a bit.”

Tony laughed at him after seeing his unsatisfied expression and waved him off.

After retreating into the private bedroom, the man answered the call.

A pleasant, gentlemanly voice sounded from the other end.

“Good evening, Mr.

Jeff.

I hope I’m not disturbing you at the moment.”

“Why, your calls are always music to my ears, Sir Hermod, never a disturbance.

Every time I hear your voice on the phone, it means something nice is about to happen,” Jeff said almost sarcastically.

“It is indeed as you said.”

“Oh?”

“Our organization is glad to inform you that Phase 1 of the Neural-Link Project you invested in along with the other selected gentlemen has finally shown success.

The clinical trials showed spectacular results across all key indicators.

I can send you the encrypted files at any time you are available.”

Neural-Link Project…

The Neural-Link Project!

Jeff’s eyes were shining.

After a few years of investment, the results were finally here!

He immediately turned and took a few steps toward the door, wanting to give instructions to the pilot, then paused, suddenly remembering that his aristocratic friend was still enjoying himself outside, waiting for the private jet to land at the private airstrip near the island.

It helps me a lot, really!
