Out of Bound

The Silent Vanguard

The sub-level civil defense shelter beneath District AAA was a damp, subterranean cavern of reinforced concrete, echoing with the frantic sounds of hundreds of terrified citizens. Industrial floodlights cast harsh shadows over families huddled together on folding cots, while sirens blared faintly through meters of earth overhead.

In the midst of the chaos, a familiar voice called out over the crowd.

"Uncle Roan! Over here!"

Ruyi’s father turned to see Kael’s parents weaving through the packed aisle, carrying heavy duffel bags. Kael followed closely behind his parents, looking pale but alert. The two families immediately congregated in a quieter corner near the reinforced support pillars, setting down their gear with visible relief.

While the adults quickly huddled together—Ruyi's parents and Kael's parents rapidly exchanging anxious hushed whispers about the terrifying red sky and rumors of the gate breaking—the three younger cousins stepped back into the shadows behind a concrete pillar to talk in private.

Kael kept his eyes locked on Ruyi. Having felt the subtle, terrifying shift in her spatial aura back at the tea shop weeks prior, he could see the absolute, eerie stillness in her eyes. She wasn't frightened. She was calculating.

"You're going out there, aren't you?" Kael asked softly, his voice barely audible beneath the cavernous echo of the shelter.

"Rion, I need you to stay here with Mom and Dad," Ruyi said, completely ignoring Kael's question as she turned to her younger brother. Her voice was firm, leaving no room for argument. "Watch over them. If anything gets down into these tunnels, use your barrier—but only if it's life or death. I'm going to survey the surface and assess the situation."

Rion’s eyes widened in disbelief. "What? Ruyi, are you crazy? It’s a Class-1 gate! The loudspeakers said high-tier Alphas are everywhere! How are you even going to move around out there without getting torn apart?"

"I have my own methods," Ruyi replied smoothly, her voice cool and unbothered. "My ability allows me to bypass the surface danger entirely. I can move without being seen or sensed."

Rion stared at her, jaw slack. "Your ability... wait, you can teleport?"

"I'll explain later," Ruyi cut in gently, placing a hand on his shoulder. "I'll return as soon as I can. Keep Mom and Dad calm."

"I'm going with you," Kael interjected instantly, stepping between Ruyi and the tunnel exit.

Ruyi frowned, her amethyst eyes narrowing. "No. You're staying here."

"I'm not letting you wander out into a Class-1 disaster zone alone, Ruyi," Kael insisted, his jaw set tight. He held up a hand, a faint, compressed ripple of spatial energy flickering across his knuckles. "I've been refining my Spatial Tether like you told me. I can keep up, and I can cover your back if things go south."

Ruyi sighed, offering him a flat, unimpressed look. "Don't separate from everyone. It's safer if you stay."

"I'm not asking for permission," Kael replied stubbornly, crossing his arms. "Either we go together, or I'll cause enough of a scene right now that Uncle Lin won't let you out of his sight."

Ruyi studied her cousin for a long moment, weighing the time it would waste to argue against his sheer stubbornness. "Fine. But you follow my instructions down to the second. If I tell you to retreat, you don't hesitate."

Kael turned to Rion, patting his younger cousin's shoulder reassurringly. "Don't worry, kid. I guarantee you, she and I will be fine. I'll look after her."

"Don't make promises you can't keep," Ruyi spat coldly, though a faint, subtle softening touched the corner of her eyes.

Now came the hardest part: convincing their parents.

When Ruyi and Kael approached the four adults and announced their intention to step outside the shelter to "help the surface volunteers at the secondary supply intake," the reaction was immediate and fierce.

"Absolutely not!" Ruyi's mother gasped, grabbing Ruyi's wrist tightly. "Are you out of your mind? Did you not hear the sirens? There are monsters out there!"

"Dad, Auntie, please listen," Kael tried to explain, forcing a calm expression onto his face. "The secondary intake is just at the top of the bunker stairs. They're short-handed on civilians to help organize incoming medical crates for the injured—"

"They have registered Guild Hunters for that!" Kael’s father snapped angrily, his hands shaking as he motioned toward the heavy blast doors. "There are Awakened professionals whose entire job is to handle this catastrophe! Why should my son and my niece risk their lives?"

"Your father is right!" Ruyi's dad chimed in, stepping in front of them with his arms crossed stubbornly. "You two are non-awakened civilians! You stay right here in this shelter where it's safe. Let the Hunters handle the beasts!"

The argument stretched on agonizingly. Minute after minute ticked away while Ruyi stood silently, letting Kael handle the bulk of the convincing while she subtly monitored the spatial vibrations through the ceiling.

It took nearly twenty minutes of relentless pleading, promises to stay strictly within the fortified inner perimeter of the bunker entrance, and Kael swearing on his life that they would run back down the moment a single siren sounded, before the four parents finally—and reluctantly—relented.

"Ten minutes!" Ruyi's mother called out tearfully as they stepped toward the stairs. "If you aren't back in ten minutes, I'm coming up there to get you myself!"

Once they turned the corner into the dim stairwell leading to the surface, away from the crowded main hall, Kael let out a long, exhausted breath.

"Man, that was exhausting," Kael muttered, leaning against the concrete wall. "Alright, how are we slipping past the Guild guards stationed at the top of the stairwell without them seeing us?"

"We aren't using the stairwell," Ruyi said quietly.

She reached out, grabbing Kael’s jacket sleeve.

"Hold your breath," she instructed.

Before Kael could even ask what she meant, Ruyi activated her newly acquired Spatial Anchor. She called upon the microscopic void mark she had left hours prior on a tall, abandoned rooftop overlooking Sector 1's dead zone.

Whishp.

A silent, zero-pressure vacuum enveloped them both for a fraction of a second. Kael felt a terrifying, weightless sensation—as if the world had suddenly vanished—before his boots slammed down onto cold, gritty gravel.

The damp, noisy underground shelter was gone.

Instead, Kael found himself standing five hundred feet in the air on the windy roof of an abandoned skyscraper. The sky above was a nightmarish canvas of bleeding crimson, and the distant roars of Class-1 Alpha beasts echoed across the ruined city streets below.

Kael stumbled back, clutching his chest as he gasped for air, his eyes wide with absolute shock as he stared at Ruyi.

"You..." Kael wheezed, looking from his feet to the burning skyline. "This... this isn't just spatial manipulation! What are you?"

Ruyi didn't answer. She stood at the edge of the roof, her dark hair whipping in the violent gale, her amethyst eyes reflecting the crimson glare of the burning gate.

"Stay close," Ruyi said, her voice chillingly serene as her void folded around them once more. "We have work to do."
