Out of Bound

The Eye of the Storm

The air near the epicenter of Sector 1 was suffocating.

The Class-1 rift hovered like a bleeding tear in reality, over a hundred yards wide, spilling a crimson haze that distorted the surrounding skyline. Buildings near the gate leaned at unnatural angles, their concrete foundations twisted by volatile spatial pressure.

Ruyi and Kael crouched on the upper ledge of a collapsed overpass, looking down into the cratered plaza beneath the rift.

"There should be a source," Ruyi murmured, her amethyst eyes sweeping over the swarming waves of low-tier crawlers and armored gargoyles. "This isn't random. Look at how they're moving."

Kael squinted, focusing his spatial perception. "You're right... They're not just mindlessly rampaging. The lesser beasts are forming defensive perimeters around specific intersections. They're taking orders."

"Someone or something stronger is directing them," Ruyi said, her tone growing colder. "A beast with enough intelligence to command those capable of receiving it."

Kael let out a bitter breath. "The Guild hunters at the primary line must know it too. That's probably why they issued a total evacuation order instead of pushing in. They know there's a boss-class entity steering this mess." He paused, glancing sideways at Ruyi. "If we work together with the Guild responders..."

He trailed off, catching the sharp, silent frown on Ruyi's face.

Kael sighed, rubbing the back of his neck. "Yeah. I guess we’d get noticed instantly. Vance would have us in an interrogation room before the blood even dried."

He knew they were both exceptionally strong—far stronger than any civilian had a right to be—but stepping into the spotlight was a suicide pact with their freedom. Still, looking at the horrors unfolding below, Kael couldn't shake the pit in his stomach.

For twenty tense minutes, the cousins stalked the shadows of the ruin, tracking the subtle, rhythmic pulse of spatial energy radiating through the terrain. Guided by Ruyi's absolute sensitivity to the void, they finally pinpointed the heart of the command structure.

At the center of a devastated multi-story shopping mall whose glass dome had been completely shattered sat the entity.

It was a Spatial Distortion Alpha—a towering, six-limbed behemoth encased in obsidian-like chitin that cracked and flared with unstable violet light. Unlike the mindless beasts on the perimeter, this creature sat motionless on a throne of crushed steel, its long, segmented tail tapping against the ground. With every tap, a visible ripple of spatial distortion radiated outward, sending command pulses to the sub-beasts across the sector.

"That's it," Kael whispered, his knuckles whitening on his blade. "That's the commander."

Before they could act, a sudden explosion of elemental fire shook the atrium.

A high-ranking Guild strike team—five heavily armored Class-A Hunters—vaulted through the shattered skylight. They moved with textbook precision, their leader firing a concentrated beam of compressed plasma straight at the Alpha's head.

Ruyi and Kael stayed motionless in the high rafters, watching the engagement unfold.

"Look at its movement," Ruyi instructed softly. "Study it."

The fight was brutal and brief. The strike team leader thought he had landed a decisive blow, but as the plasma beam reached the Alpha, the space directly in front of the monster folded in on itself.

Whishp.

The plasma beam vanished into a localized spatial distortion and re-emerged directly behind the strike team's shield-bearer, blasting him through a concrete pillar.

"It can manipulate spatial folds," Kael gasped under his breath, horror creeping into his voice. "It... it's doing what you do, Ruyi!"

The Alpha moved with terrifying speed. It didn't rely on raw brute strength alone; it manipulated the spatial coordinates of the mall itself. When the Guild mages cast spells, the Alpha twisted the space around them, causing their attacks to implode or hit their own teammates. When the vanguard hunters tried to close the distance, the beast warped the ground beneath their feet, dropping them into localized spatial shears.

Within three minutes, the entire Class-A strike team was wiped out. The leader fell last, his body crushed when the Alpha compressed a ten-foot area of space down to the size of a marble.

Silence returned to the ruined mall, broken only by the Alpha's heavy, rhythmic breathing as it absorbed the dying hunters' mana.

Kael was drenched in cold sweat. "Are we... are we really fighting that thing?"

"If we don't," Ruyi replied, her voice eerily calm despite the carnage below, "it will finish absorbing their energy, expand its domain, and reach the shelters within the hour."

Kael stared at the dead hunters, then down at his own trembling hands. He knew the grim reality of their situation. In a Class-1 disaster, sacrificing the few was often the only way the many survived. The hunters below had bought them critical information with their lives—revealing the beast's reaction time, its spatial warping radius, and the short cooldown on its reflection technique.

"Let's just do our best," Kael sighed, forcing his breathing to steady as he channeled every ounce of spatial energy he could muster into his fingers. "I'll draw its focus and fold the distance when it tries to warp you. You finish it."

Ruyi looked at her cousin, her amethyst eyes glowing with an unearthly violet hue as she released the final locks on her internal energy.

"Don't die, Kael," Ruyi said softly.

Deep in her chest, the boundless void opened wide—no longer compressed, no longer suppressed. For the first time since her awakening, Ruyi prepared to push her Void to its absolute limits, combining Spatial Anchor, Cold Storage, and Matter Erasure into a singular, absolute state of combat.

She stepped off the rafters and fell into the eye of the storm.
