The Shield and the Tether
The cold, damp air of the lower shelter stairwell hit them like a physical blow.
Ruyi and Kael collapsed against the concrete wall just out of sight of the main underground hall. Kael slumped onto the bottom step, gasping for air as he used his teeth and one good hand to tie a torn strip of his jacket tightly around his shattered left arm, keeping it immobilized.
"We made it..." Kael muttered, spitting a mouthful of dark blood onto the concrete floor. "We actually... survived that thing."
Ruyi sat on the floor beside him, resting her head against the cool concrete, her eyes closed as she focused on forcing her breath to steady. Every inhale sent a sharp, agonizing throb through her broken ribs, her void core completely drained down to absolute zero.
Neither had truly recovered—their bodies were battered, bruised, and pushed well past their human limits. But before they could even attempt to wipe the dried blood from their faces, a sudden, violent shudder rocked the foundation beneath them.
BOOM!
Dust rained down from the ceiling. Screams of sheer terror erupted from the main shelter hall just beyond the heavy blast doors.
Kael’s head snapped up, his swollen, bloodied right eye straining to see through the darkness. "What was that?! Did the surface barricade fail?!"
"No," Ruyi whispered, her amethyst eyes opening slowly. Even in her severely drained state, her spatial perception picked up the localized vibration immediately. "It’s not from the surface. A stray sub-gate opened in the lower maintenance tunnels beneath the shelter."
A pack of low-tier crawlers had bypassed the surface defenses entirely, digging straight through the old drainage pipes into the civilian bunker.
"Rion..." Kael gasped, struggling to push himself up against the wall, his knees trembling violently. "He's in there with our parents!"
Ruyi tried to stand, but her legs buckled instantly beneath her. Her throat tasted of iron, her vision swimming in black spots. She knew that between the two of them, Kael was in a slightly better condition to move.
"Go," Ruyi said softly, her voice barely audible. "I'll be right behind you."
Kael gave her a tight nod and forced his broken body forward, limping heavy-footed toward the blast doors.
Inside the overcrowded main shelter hall, panic had turned into absolute chaos.
A heavy concrete wall near the rear storage bays had caved in, revealing a dark, jagged tunnel. Four Razor-Claw Crawlers—frenzied by the scent of packed human flesh—leaped into the crowded room, their guttural roars echoing off the vaulted ceilings.
Civilian guards ran in terror. Parents threw themselves over their children. Ruyi and Rion’s parents were pushed back against a massive support pillar, trapped in the corner as two crawlers turned their glowing red eyes directly toward them.
"Lia! Get behind me!" Uncle Lin screamed, grabbing a metal folding chair to hold in front of his wife, his face pale with horror.
A crawler hissed, its powerful hind legs flexing as it prepared to spring directly at them.
FLARE.
A translucent, shimmering wall of high-density force materialized two inches from the beast’s snapping jaws.
CLANG!
The crawler slammed headfirst into the invisible barrier, its snout shattering on impact as it bounced backward onto the floor.
Rion stood five feet in front of his parents, his legs set wide, his breathing heavy but controlled. A small, dense, palm-sized Absolute Barrier hovered in front of him, glowing with a faint, steady light.
"Rion?!" his mother gasped, staring at her son in utter disbelief. "What... what was that?!"
"Stay back, Mom!" Rion shouted, not turning his head. "I've got this!"
Another beast lunged from his left flank, aiming for his blind spot. Rion tried to manifest a second barrier, but the rapid consumption of stamina made his vision flicker. He was trying to cover too much area at once without proper combat training.
Thwip!
Suddenly, a thin, invisible thread of compressed spatial energy wrapped tightly around the leaping beast's throat, snatching it mid-air and yanking it backward with violent force.
BANG!
The beast was slammed face-first into the concrete floor, its neck snapping instantly.
Kael stepped out from the shadowy doorway, stumbling slightly as he favored his good right side, his face bloodied and battered but his expression fiercely determined.
"Don't stretch your barrier thin, kid!" Kael called out, his voice hoarse as he manifested two more spatial lines with his right hand. "You provide the anchor! I'll provide the range!"
Rion’s eyes lit up as he recognized his cousin. "Kael!"
A wave of intense relief washed over Rion, immediately followed by a cold spike of dread as he noticed the horrifying state Kael was in—broken arm, covered in blood, barely holding onto consciousness. In that brief split second, a terrible panic for Ruyi seized his chest, but he knew this wasn't the moment to ask.
"Combine them!" Kael yelled, anchoring a Spatial Tether directly onto the surface of Rion’s barrier. "If you hold the shield steady, I can sling your barrier across the room like a battering ram!"
Realization flashed in Rion’s eyes. A moveable fortress.
Rion discovered a brand-new way for him to fight in an instant. Though he severely lacked formal combat experience and couldn't strike effectively on his own yet, he could rely entirely on Kael’s momentum.
Instead of creating a passive wall to hide behind, Rion compressed his Absolute Barrier down to the size of a riot shield, making it unyielding and indestructible. The moment the barrier solidified, Kael attached his Spatial Tether to it, yanking the anchor across the room at top speed.
BOOM!
The high-density barrier swept through the remaining two crawlers like an armored wrecking ball, crushing their carapaces against the back tunnel wall before they could even react.
The shelter fell into a stunned, breathless silence.
The immediate threat was gone. The tunnel was clear.
Rion stood panting in the center of the bay, his small barrier fading into air, while Kael leaned heavily against a steel pillar, letting out a ragged, exhausted laugh.
For the first time, as the two cousins stood side-by-side in front of their terrified, bewildered families, they felt the undeniable, ancient echo of their shared bloodline—an absolute synergy between unyielding defense and spatial manipulation.
Step by agonizing step, dragging her feet along the wall, Ruyi stepped out from the shadow of the stairwell, leaning quietly against the doorframe as she watched them. A subtle, rare smile touched the corner of her lips.
They were no longer just hiding. They were ready.
Rion turned toward the doorway, his eyes widening as he finally spotted her. "Ruyi! Where have you—"
Rion's voice cut off as Ruyi's eyes lost their focus. The sheer, physical exhaustion of running her void core on empty finally caught up to her. Her knees buckled beneath her weight, and she pitched forward.
At the exact same moment, the last thread of adrenaline sustaining Kael snapped. His arm went limp, his eyes rolled back, and he collapsed sideways against the steel pillar.
THUD.
Both cousins hit the cold concrete floor almost simultaneously, motionless and bathed in the crimson residue of beast blood.
Panic tore through the room once more, but this time, it was born of absolute heartbreak and horror.
"Ruyi! Kael!"
Uncle Lin dropped the folding chair he was holding, sprinting across the hall alongside Aunt Lia and Kael's parents. The adults threw themselves onto the floor beside their fallen children.
"Oh God... Lia, hold her head!" Uncle Lin pleaded, his hands shaking uncontrollably as he pulled Ruyi into his arms. Her skin felt terrifyingly cold to the touch, her dark clothes stiff with dried blood that clearly wasn't just her own.
Kael's mother held her son's bloodied face against her chest, weeping aloud as his father carefully checked Kael's shattered left arm, gasping at the severe internal trauma.
Rion stood frozen for a beat, his chest heaving. He looked down at his trembling hands, then at his sister and cousin lying unconscious on the ground. The parents were in utter shock—not just from the monster attack, but from witnessing the impossible, hidden strength their children possessed.
Rion knelt beside Ruyi, pressing two fingers to her neck. Her pulse was thready and faint, but steady.
He looked toward the dark tunnel, then back to his weeping parents. He knew that when Ruyi and Kael woke up, there would be an avalanche of questions they couldn't avoid answering anymore. But as he placed a protective hand over his sister’s cold shoulder, Rion’s gaze hardened.
Whatever came next—the Guild, Vance, or the truth—he would stand in front of them and shield them, just as they had done for him.
