Don’t be fooled by how easily Heydrich completed it—that was only because his stats were high enough.

Some missions, if you sent an Astartes, would carry a degree of danger.

But for a mortal to go, it was nine deaths and one chance at life—being sent alone into the under-hive to investigate a cult of Khorne heretics.Full novel: Path of Elation in Warhammer 40K — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

Weren’t they afraid he’d just turn to Chaos outright?

And yet here they were again, only a few days later.

Working for the Inquisition was definitely more dangerous—truly a case of working a good tool to death.

But then again, the stronger the wind, the pricier the fish.

Being able to influence more people meant he could walk further along the Path.

Of course, through all of this Heydrich’s expression never changed in the slightest.

And to counter these methods of searching memories—

Heydrich had deliberately fabricated for himself a complete set of memories.

Otherwise, with the protection of the Path of Enigmata, even if the Emperor came in person there would be no way to read his memories—no way to see anything at all.

So to avoid drawing attention, Heydrich had constructed a rough set of memories within his mind; as long as it wasn’t an interrogation-level questioning, there would be no problem.

And if they tried to forcibly interrogate him, then they couldn’t blame Heydrich for cutting his way through the Inquisition single-handedly and slipping away.

Getting him to solo-kill an Inquisitor would be difficult, but if he wanted to slip away from the Inquisition, that wasn’t really much of a problem.

After all, even Khayon had managed to break out of prison on Holy Terra; the prisons in Warhammer could rival the prisons of the Land of Light.

“Yes.”

Heydrich answered the Inquisitor’s assessment neither humbly nor arrogantly.

He had indeed completed every mission perfectly—after all, there was only one outcome for failing a mission, and that was death!!!

And as for those missions….

Through the Path’s replaying, Heydrich was even rendered speechless to see that there was actually a record of killing a Genestealer Patriarch.

You had to understand that some Genestealer Patriarchs had combat power rivaling certain Chapter Champions, and more terrifying than the Genestealer Patriarch itself were the boundless masses of Genestealers swarming around it.

In any case, this assassination business carried the chance that even an Astartes might botch it with one careless move; it was only because Heydrich’s strength was sufficient that he could truly bear this identity.

So this was the same core reason wingsuit flying had zero negative reviews: failure meant death.

Of course, the compensation wasn’t bad either—Heydrich’s standard of living was considerably better than that of many upper-hive nobles.

To outsiders, this identity was a taciturn but never-failing perfect tool, one that never cut corners.

What Inquisitor Gers saw when he pulled the files was a string of blood-red “Completed” marks, like a straight line of blood running through three full years of mission records—any one of which, taken on its own, would have been enough to earn a mortal a medal or a place on a tombstone.

And yet Wells was still alive; that alone said enough.

“…..”

After seeing Heydrich’s demeanor, Inquisitor Gers gave him an extra glance.

Ordinary people—forget the sight of him, an Inquisitor—were scared witless even by some of his interrogators, scattering in terror.

Truly an elite of the Sector Governor’s family—calm and composed in everything he did.

He had even faced Chaos head-on, yet by the looks of it there wasn’t any great problem.

Although the Inquisition was fanatical, it wasn’t as if they purged everyone who had come into contact with the corruption of Chaos.

Otherwise, all those IG would have been wiped out by them.

Someone from a top-tier family, especially, was a separate case—as long as there were no obvious signs of Chaos corruption, they had to think twice before making any move.

“These are your next missions.

First, go investigate the Genestealer tribe located between the under-hive and the lower-hive.

Lead them to launch an assault on the heretics and grind down their effective forces.

Second, head to another sect in the under-hive that pursues life and eternity.”

“Mm…..”

Hearing this, Heydrich didn’t refuse but rather looked at the documents in his hands and began to ponder—now all that was missing was a Tzeentch.

“Are you really that short on manpower?

Aren’t there any PDF Enforcers?”

At this, Heydrich’s brow furrowed slightly.

Although he had heard of the rich variety of species that had been put to rest at Kuent, he still felt a certain degree of shock.

“The heretics’ momentum this time is immense, and the local sector’s military strength is insufficient.

We must mobilize every available force, so this time it falls to you.”

“Uh…”

At this, Heydrich couldn’t help scratching his head—these missions really were a headache.

“Oh, right—one more person will assist you.

She is a Sister of Battle from the local Black Rose: Sister Irena.”

“Huh?”

At this, the corner of Heydrich’s mouth froze for a moment.

Then, as Inquisitor Gers’s words fell, a Sister of Battle clad in power armor and wearing a helmet walked over and gave a salute to the group.

“Are you serious?”

By now Heydrich couldn’t be bothered with appearances anymore, and grabbed hold of the Inquisitor.

Bringing this batch of lunatic bolter girls along with him to a Genestealer tribe, or into the very heart of a Nurgle cult—are you sure this thing can keep herself under control?

And if he brought along a dead weight, he’d find his own hands tied.

“…..”

After seeing Heydrich’s expression, Gers’s eye twitched as well.

Clearly he too knew how absurd this decision was, but having a Sister of Battle at one’s side was an excellent safeguard against corruption.

He wasn’t entirely at ease with Heydrich either, so he needed someone to keep an eye on him.

“This is for your own good……”

So at this moment, although he knew his demand was a bit excessive, he still issued the order.

“Then it’ll cost extra!!!”

At this Heydrich couldn’t be bothered to argue further—worst case, he’d just lay her out cold with one solid blow and carry out the mission alone.

“If you can complete the mission, I can apply for you to qualify as an acolyte of the Inquisition.

That status would be considerably higher than what you have here.

And if you’re not interested in that, then this will be yours instead.”

As he spoke, the Inquisitor produced a property deed, for a small villa with a garden located in the spire-top.

Its value was absolutely terrifying—and it wasn’t even something money could buy.

“Deal.”

Although he didn’t care about wealth, in order to maintain his persona Heydrich still chose to agree.

This gesture, however, made the Sister of Battle beside him tilt her head, though because of the helmet her expression beneath couldn’t be seen.

“Then get moving quickly.

And you—you’ll need to restrain yourself when the time comes.”

“Yes…..”

After hearing the Inquisitor’s words, Irena replied somewhat reluctantly.

Then she couldn’t help rubbing the boltgun in her hands, looking as though she planned to launch an attack at any moment.

“No time to lose—come with me.

I’ll go contact my informants and have them provide me some intelligence.

Next we’ll head to the Genestealers—er, the Genestealer tribe first.”

At this Heydrich didn’t refuse, but took the mission report and left.

Before leaving, of course, he went to the armory to stock up on a piece of equipment, including a talisman with a defensive force field—though this thing was of limited use to him.

But considering that a madwoman was now trailing along at his side, Heydrich figured it was better to rein himself in a little—lest he provoke this one too much and she ascend on the spot into a Living Saint.
