Fissures in the Nexus

Pledge of the Ranger Vol. 1: The Ash and the Ember

As the dawn's light barely broke through the looming trees of the Eldergrove Forest, an eerie calm hung above the Etherial Nexus, masking the chaos that surged beneath its crystalline surface. Arion could feel a tremor in the air, an unsettling reminder of the monstrous shadows lurking just beyond the rifts in reality. The Nexus pulsed ominously, its colors shifting from vibrant greens to murky blacks, indicating time was running out.

"There—on the left!" Linara shouted, her voice slicing through the fog of uncertainty that gripped them all. Arion turned sharply, his heart racing as he took in the sight of shadow creatures spilling forth from a breach in the Nexus, writhing like smoke given form. They were more vicious than any he'd encountered before, struck with an instinctual hunger, their ghastly forms indistinguishable against the darkening sky.

"Move!" Thalos rallied, brandishing his gleaming sword as he charged ahead, eagerness coursing through his veins. Arion could see the determination etched on his face, a solid foundation amidst the tempest brewing in his own heart.

Engaged in battle, footsteps thundering across the fractured ground, Arion drew his pistol from the holster. The familiar weight of it steadied him, kept the nagging thoughts of betrayal at bay, if only for a moment. "Kuro! Nyx!" he called, shortly before the ground quaked again, a violent reminder that time was of the essence.

From the shadows, Kuro leaped forth, a blur of sleek black fur, flanking Arion and scanning the swirling chaos with a keen eye. Nyx followed, soaring high above, the sharp whistle of her wings adding urgency to their situation. "Keep your heads clear, we have to seal the breaches—they won’t stop coming!" Linara urged as she thrust her sword deep into a shadow creature, sending it dissipating into a plume of inky smoke.

The group maneuvered together, weaving through the ever-tightening pockets of darkness, their senses heightened. But just as Arion lined up for his first shot, disturbing images began to seep into his mind—flashes of his family, their faces both haunting and familiar. He staggered slightly, realizing he was losing focus. How could he fight when memories of betrayal and fear encircled his heart like a vice?

He fired, the loud crack of the gunfire booming through the forest. The shot struck true, the creature faintly screeching as smoke trailed from where it had been hit, but it was enough to cascade deeper doubts through his mind. Arion shook his head, trying to dispel the visions, clamping down on the memories that made him question his purpose.

“Arion! Focus!” Thalos’s voice cut through the fog of doubt, compelling him back to the moment. With renewed resolve, he aimed again, channeling all the pain and conflict into a single pull of the trigger—sending another creature keeling over into shadows. But there was no time to savor his small triumph; more emerged, emboldened and ferocious.

"Arion, we need to clear a path to the rift!" Linara shouted, snapping him back to reality. She was fighting valiantly but seemed to be losing ground as more surged forth.

"This isn't just about us! Think of what they—what he wants!" Arion said, desperation creeping into his tone. Zyphorax's cryptic words echoed in his ears like a mocking chant amidst the chaos; a reminder that deception was rampant.

The tale has been illicitly lifted; should you spot it on Amazon, report the violation.

Thalos swung his blade, cutting through shadow with alarming precision. "Then let’s ensure they don’t reach it! Together!" With that rallying cry, they descended into an all-out assault, side by side, fusing their skills to keep the encroaching darkness at bay.

As creatures fell, Arion's bond with Kuro deepened. His companion surged forward, leaping on creatures while dodging the mocking tendrils of darkness that lashed out at him. Arion felt the pulse of their connection, something raw and pure, a trust that blossomed in the middle of the abyss. With every bullet fired, with every swipe of his blade, he and Kuro danced seamlessly, a pair of predators in harmony.

Amid the fray, a flicker of light caught his eye from the depths of the rift. There, perched atop the remnants of shadow, lay what seemed to be an artifact—the remnants of an ancient relic, glowing faintly against the darkness that surrounded it.

"That’s what we need!" Linara pointed out while fighting back against two shadow creatures. "It might stabilize the Nexus!"

Arion hesitated, a gnawing hesitation creeping back in. Images of betrayal flared back in his mind: his parents… the secrets that had engulfed their legacy… And just as a voice from the shadows urged him onward, he found courage at the thought of an answer, a truth about himself and the family he had lost.

The horde seemed endless, and panic threatened to fracture his resolve anew. "I can’t do this alone!" he confessed, the weight of uncertainty making his voice stumble as he glanced toward Linara and Thalos.

"But you don’t have to!" Thalos grunted, thrusting his blade into the ground, creating a shimmering shield that pushed the encroaching shadows back momentarily. "Arion! We trust you!"

"But what if I—what if I can’t?" he questioned, vulnerability tearing through him like the very shadows they battled. Yet… as he looked at Kuro and Nyx, their fierce loyalty illuminated the path ahead, urging him toward action.

"Trust is a choice," Linara replied, her voice steady, slicing through the chaos. "Trust us as we trust in you."

“Let’s finish this, then!” Arion shouted, the fire of determination igniting within him as he broke into a sprint, eyes set on the artifact as a shadow creature lunged at him, its claws mere inches from his face.

Kuro leaped, the wolf tackling the monster down into the ground, allowing Arion to rush past, adrenaline surging in his veins. "We need to clear these out! Nyx!" he called. Nyx swooped down, a streak of glimmering feathers, striking at the creatures looming around her. With Kuro's help, they formed a barrier, driving the shadows back.

"Now, Arion! Now’s your chance!" Thalos shouted, severing through the last line of defense, leaving a path lined with smoke and shadows—all dead.

Arion reached the artifact, a shimmering orb held together by threads of azure light. As he reached out, however, a thought struck him: could this be another deception? Zyphorax could be watching from the shadows, pulling at his strings, ready to ensnare him within his own doubts. But without the orb, the Nexus would collapse upon itself, and all would be consumed.

Determined, he outstretched his fingers toward the pulsing orb. Just then, the ground convulsed beneath him, a heavy rumble—an omen of chaos.

His heart sank as he felt the earth crack around him, fissures snaking out like dark veins. Turning back, he saw it tower over them: a colossal shadow creature rising from the rift, its eyes glimmering with an insatiable hunger.

Panic surged anew, a howl rippling through the air that silenced the tumult around them, each of their hearts pounding in sync with the chaos that erupted. Arion froze momentarily, the orb just within his reach but the beast… it loomed larger than all his fears combined.

Nothing else mattered but his next choice: should he snatch the artifact and risk them all being overwhelmed? Or should he rally his friends and fight the nightmare before them? The nexus of his destiny was now, and shattered choices hung in the balance of life and death.
