Chapter 15: Beneath the Armor

Plugged In: Reincarnated As A Demon Lord (Now I'll Conquer The World)

The mine tunnel is quiet.

Almost too quiet.

Lucien walks in the middle of their trio, flanked by Serenith at the front, her wings tucked tightly behind her as her divine glow lit a golden path through the mine. And Groth, looming silently at the rear in her full, clanking armor.

Torchlight flickers along veins of raw ore embedded in the walls, throwing long, jittery shadows that seem to lean in and listen as their steps echo off into the distance. Dust floats in the stale air, while, somewhere far below, an elder dragon stirs.

Lucien suddenly throws his hands up dramatically, startling both women.

"That’s it!" He cries out, "I can’t take it anymore!"

Serenith spins, alarmed. "What? What’s wrong? Do you sense something?"

Lucien jabs a finger behind him. "It’s Groth! The sexual tension radiating off her armor is intolerable! I can taste it in the air! I can’t go on like this."

Serenith blinks, gobsmacked. "Are you deranged? Groth? General Groth? She’s not—!"

But before she can finish, a thunderous clank echoes through the cave as General Groth drops to one knee, helmet bowed low.

"My Lord..." Her voice came out small and muffled from within the helmet. "Forgive me. I’ve tried to control it. But hearing the others talk about your morale boosting methods, I couldn’t help but feel..."

She trails off.

"... a little jealous."

Lucien gasps dramatically and rushes to her, dropping to his own knees.

"My poor Groth!" he wails. "In my empire-building frenzy, I committed the most unforgivable sin of management. I’ve neglected my most valuable employee!"

He gently reaches up and brushes a gloved hand across her helmet’s curved edge. "You wear a magnificent piece of engineering," he murmurs. "Did you forge it yourself?"

Groth nods, hesitantly.

Lucien’s voice drops, smoky and smooth. "Then you are as brilliant as your creation is powerful."

He rises, then bows low again, hand over his chest, eyes smoldering with a burning intensity. "I must see you. Not just the armor. But the true you. May I... be graced with seeing the soul beneath the metal?"

There’s a tense pause.

HISS~

Groth’s armor releases jets of steam as gears click and plates unfold, and with a final puff of mist, a small, delicate figure emerges from within the armor, like a ghost emerging from a machine.

She’s pale, flushed with heat, fire-red hair tousled from the helmet. Slender and fragile, with luminous green eyes that shimmer with nerves, standing barely as tall as Lucien’s chest now that several hundred pounds of enchanted plate no longer lend her height.

"Um... hi," she says shyly. "My real name is Veyra Grathalia."

Then she coughs violently before digging a compact gas mask from the armor and strapping it across her mouth. "Sorry," she wheezes. "The Ashland air doesn’t... agree with me."

Lucien coos and helps her step down from her armored shell, holding her like glass. "You’re not from the Ashlands, are you?"

Veyra shakes her head, blushing. "No... I’m from the Green Kingdom."

Serenith steps closer, gaze narrowing. "That explains it. You don’t carry the scent of demon magic."

"This is a lot." Lucien says, and he turns to Serenith. "I want to hear her story, I’m setting up camp."

"What!?" the angel gasps, "In the middle of a—"

A fountain of ash interrupts beside them, bubbling from the floor and from it, a crate emerges. Lucien kicks it open, tosses the contents aside, and begins weaving tendrils of shadow through the air. Within moments, a cozy little camp takes shape. Tent, fire, blankets, even enchanted cushions arranged with a care that seems almost surgical, considering he built the whole thing out of glorified smoke and ash.

Veyra blinks. "You carry that in your ash magic?!"

"One of the perks of being a dark lord." He grins, "I’m prepared for anything."

He helps the wobbly Veyra towards the tent, then halfway there, he pauses, apologizes for his forwardness, and sweeps her into his arms anyway, carrying her the rest of the way like she weighs nothing at all.

Serenith groans, wings twitching. "You’re impossible."

Lucien only smiles more sweetly with the wood-elf clutched to his chest before they both vanish into the tent flap.

Inside, the air is warm and soothing, filled with the gentle flicker of firelight against shadow-woven walls. A plush bed awaits, complete with pillows, fur blankets, and subtle runes of comfort stitched into the frame.

Lucien sets her down tenderly, then flips her onto her tummy.

She gasps, then moans as his hands hover above her back and shadowy tendrils emerge, massaging her tense, overworked muscles with expert precision, working the knots out of a body that have clearly spent decades locked inside a suit of armor built for carnage, not comfort.

"I’ve been a terrible lord," Lucien murmurs. "You’ve carried so much burden in silence... and I barely knew your name."

Veyra whimpers, eyes fluttering.

He continues. "Tell me your story. I want to know you. Why you came here. Why you serve a Demon Lord."

Through hitched breaths and soft sighs, Veyra begins. "I’m... a wood elf. I was born in the greenwilds, forests stretching from horizon to horizon. My people revere balance. Harmony. Natural precision."

Lucien nods, working her shoulders with rhythmic shadows.

"But me? I built things. Toys and traps at first. Then weapons and war machines. While others were learning forest songs, I was designing siege engines."

"You sound like a visionary." Lucien whispers across her back.

Her breath hitches. "Well... they exiled me. Deemed me a threat to the forest. So I wandered. Until I reached the Ashlands. Here, at least, my skills had some purpose."

Lucien’s brow furrows with sympathy.

"But this land hurts me. I’m not meant to be here. So I built the armor to survive. I forged the life support systems. This mask too."

She turns her head toward him, eyes glistening. "I was looking for a purpose. And I found you."

Lucien’s smile turns unusually soft and from the tent flap, Serenith sniffles. "That was... actually beautiful."

She walks forward, kneels beside the bed, and takes Veyra’s hand. "You’re not born of darkness. That’s why the Ashlands hurt you. But not anymore."

She leans down and kisses Veyra gently on the forehead and a soft pulse of holy light shimmers through the elf.

"You deserve to breathe a little easier." The angel smiles.

Lucien blinks. "Wait... she didn’t get hurt from your aura?"

"My light only harms those born of dark magic." Serenith scoffs, "She may be here, but she’s not from here."

Veyra reaches up slowly and removes her gas mask. She takes a deep breath, filled with ash, dark magics, and new possibilities.

And exhales with a smile.
