The second Round 2 match was called in the afternoon.

Team Three against Team Four.

Míng Xīn watched from the observation platform with his tea and Liàng's sixth scheduled meal of the day and the particular quality of attention he gave to things that mattered in ways he had not yet fully classified.

The unknown participant stood at the center of Team Three's formation.

Plain robes. Unremarkable features that added up to something you could not look away from. He had not changed his clothes since the tournament began, which either meant he had not been assigned competitor quarters or he had been assigned them and found them irrelevant. His eyes were the same as they had been at dawn during the bracket announcement. Too still. Too old. Looking at the arena floor with the quality of someone who was not seeing the floor but was seeing something that occupied the same space the floor occupied.

Fang Liú stood at the center of Team Four's formation opposite him.

He looked good. He always looked good. The Eternal Courts bearing carried well on his frame, the warm smile in place, the calculating eyes behind it doing the work the smile was meant to prevent people from noticing. He was performing for his grandfather in the observation platform above. Míng Xīn noted which section of the platform Elder Councillor Fang occupied and noted the angle of Fang Liú's body relative to it and noted that the performance had been calibrated to that specific angle.

Filed.

The match started.

For the first three minutes it was unremarkable. Team Three and Team Four moved through the early exchanges with the standard tactical rhythm of a mid-level Round 2 contest, positions established, pressure tested, the field organized into the recognizable patterns of people who had trained in structured environments and were applying that training honestly.

The unknown participant did not move for the first three minutes.

He stood at his position in Team Three's formation and watched the match develop around him with his too still eyes and his plain robes and his complete absence of the specific tension that active fighters carried in their bodies in the seconds before they committed to movement.

He looked like he was waiting.

In the fourth minute he moved.

What he did was not describable in terms of any technique Míng Xīn had in his archive. It was not a gap in the archive. The archive was extensive. The archive included the restricted texts Elder Fang had moved three years ago and the older documents the Remnants delegation had left with the Eternal Courts after the awakening phenomenon and several things that had no formal classification and lived in the deep storage of the Grand Archive under access designations that required grandfather's personal authorization.

None of them described what he was looking at.

The technique had no name that corresponded to any naming convention used by any faction in the hidden civilization. It moved through Team Four's formation with the unhurried quality of something that had not needed to hurry in a very long time. Two Team Four members were at the boundary line before they registered that they had been moved there. The third was kneeling with both palms flat on the arena floor in the submission position before the crowd had time to react.

Fang Liú adjusted.

He was good. He was genuinely good beneath the performance and the warm smile and the calculating eyes. His cultivation at Heaven Breaker Early Stage was real and he knew how to use it and he moved to meet the unknown participant with the specific commitment of someone who had decided that winning this match mattered and was prepared to spend what it cost.

The unknown participant looked at him.

Just looked.

Fang Liú's technique met something that was not resistance exactly. Not deflection. The technique did not go somewhere else. It simply stopped producing the result techniques produced, the way a word stopped meaning something when you said it in a language the other person did not speak. Fang Liú stood in the arena looking at his own output with the brief unguarded expression of someone who had encountered something they had no category for.

Then the unknown participant's hand moved once.

Fang Liú was at the boundary line.

The crowd was completely silent for two full seconds.

Then it was very loud.

Beside Míng Xīn, Liàng had stopped writing.

This was the first time in two days of tournament coverage that Liàng had stopped writing. Her scroll was open. Her brush was in her hand. She was looking at the arena floor with her large calm eyes carrying the specific quality they carried when she had seen something that required the mind to catch up to the eyes.

"System," Míng Xīn said.

[ PRIMORDIAL SOVEREIGN EMPEROR SYSTEM ]

[ You are going to ask about the unknown participant again. ]

"Full assessment."

[ Still unavailable at this time. ]

[ I understand this is frustrating. ]

[ It is not meant to be frustrating. It is meant to be correct. ]

He watched the unknown participant walk back to his position in Team Three's formation. The too still eyes had not changed. The plain robes were undisturbed. He had moved once and done what he had done and returned to waiting as though the interval between the start of the match and that single movement had simply been administrative.

The thing in Míng Xīn's chest moved.

Not the small presence it had been since Round 1. Larger. The way a sound became larger when the source of it came closer. The ancient impossible familiarity of it pressing against the underside of his ribs from a place that had no meridian correspondence and no cultivation basis and no explanation available in any text he had ever read.

He pressed one hand flat against his chest without thinking about it.

Liàng looked at him immediately.

He lowered his hand.

"System," he said again, and kept his voice exactly where it always was.

[ PRIMORDIAL SOVEREIGN EMPEROR SYSTEM ]

[ Yes. ]

[ I know what you felt. ]

[ I know what it means. ]

[ Not yet. ]

[ Some things must be felt completely before they are named. If I name it now you will file it and move on. If you feel it until you cannot file it, you will understand it in the way that changes things rather than the way that catalogues them. ]

[ Watch the rest of the match. ]

[ Also Liàng is looking at you. ]

Liàng was looking at him.

"I am fine," he said.

She looked at him for three more seconds with her large calm eyes doing the specific work they did when they were deciding whether what they were seeing required intervention or patience. She concluded patience. She returned to her scroll.

He returned to the arena floor.

The unknown participant stood in his formation with his too still eyes and his plain robes and whatever was inside him that had no text and no category and pressed against the space between Míng Xīn's ribs with the weight of something ancient recognizing something ancient across a distance that should have made recognition impossible.

Team Three won in eleven minutes.

The crowd did not make its normal sound when the match concluded. It made the sound of people who had watched something they did not have words for and were waiting for someone else to provide the words first.

No one provided them.

The rankings board updated.

[ HOLLOW CONVERGENCE TRIAL — ROUND 2 RESULTS ]

[ Team One ] Advanced — Tiān Míng Xīn, Kael Sòng, Wèi Chén

[ Team Three ] Advanced — Unknown, remaining members

[ Round 3 ] The Final Trial — Tomorrow

[ Remaining Participants ] 12

Míng Xīn read the board.

He read the Unknown entry the same way he had been reading it since the rankings first populated.

Then he picked up his tea, which had gone cold, and drank it anyway, and sat with the thing in his chest that would not be filed and would not be named and pressed against him from below like something that had been waiting a very long time to finish a sentence it had started somewhere else entirely.
