10 – Saving the Village Demon
“Sister-in-law, it’s time for breakfast.” Qingqing placed the dishes on the table.
Qin Yue’s eyes lit up at the sight of food. In her original world, her family had been so poor they could only eat wild vegetable dumplings every day, and it had been ages since she’d last seen a fluffy white steamed bun. Now, gazing at the buns, she couldn’t help but swallow several times.
The maids left after setting down the meal. Qin Yue sat on a stool with her legs spread apart, eating in a carefree, unrestrained manner.
The steamed buns were white and chewy, the porridge was delicious, and to her surprise, there were small dried meat pieces in it—extremely tender and flavorful. She couldn’t identify the meat but guessed it was game hunted by the Sang family from the mountains.
The side dish was a vibrant green wild vegetable, but it tasted far better than the bitter, astringent ones she was used to. This variety wasn’t bitter at all and had a unique, fragrant aroma.
Before she knew it, she had devoured several large steamed buns, startling even herself with her appetite.
Full and satisfied, Qin Yue moved a stool to sit in the courtyard with the maids, chatting while basking in the sun.
“Qingqing, why didn’t your cousin Mo Han come yesterday?”
“What, Sister-in-law already misses Cousin Mo Han so soon?” Qingqing teased.
Qin Yue’s face flushed instantly. He was just a fool—she had no interest in seeing him early. She was merely curious.
Cuicui chimed in, “Sister-in-law, to be honest, we’ve lived here for a year and haven’t seen Cousin Mo Han even once. We heard he’s seriously ill and recuperating somewhere.”
Qin Yue was overjoyed to hear this. If they hadn’t seen him in a year, wouldn’t that mean she too could avoid him for a long time?
This way, she could live leisurely every day. As for that foolish husband of hers, it’d be best if he never showed up.
But the moment this thought crossed her mind, Meiqiu screeched in her head, “Darling, that’s a dangerous idea! Don’t forget our mission in this world! You need to win over your foolish man, dissolve the malevolence in his heart, and earn enough Rebirth Points for us to advance to the next world! If you never meet him, you’re doomed!”
Qin Yue smirked charmingly, “Meiqiu, my beauty, tell me the truth—what do you gain from helping me complete these world missions?”
“Nothing, really! I’m just born to help others and want to get you back to your original world,” Meiqiu replied with a mysterious smile.
Qin Yue grinned mischievously, “In that case, I think this world is quite nice. I don’t want to go back, so we don’t need to work so hard on missions.”
Meiqiu pouted, whining pitifully, “Host, please don’t! I’ll be honest—I’m a low-ranking soldier in the Universal System Bureau. If I can help you complete missions, I’ll get promoted and rich.”
“Oh, so you’re a money-grubbing little System. Not bad—we’re quite alike in temperament.” Qin Yue roughly ruffled Meiqiu’s black fluffy fur.
Meiqiu leaped away instantly and chuckled, “Of course! A System that doesn’t want promotion isn’t a good System. There are no permanent friends, only permanent interests. So, Host, let’s work hard together on the path to wealth and success!”
Just as Qin Yue reached out to ruffle it again, Meiqiu vanished into a puff of black smoke. For three consecutive days, the foolish man did not appear, but every night at midnight, Qin Yue would have the same dream.
