The next day, the stranger came again.

Maria noticed him the moment the door opened, though she pretended not to.

Her instinct never lie and the time was exactly the same as yesterday but somehow, the air shifted.

Her heart knew before her eyes confirmed it.

“He is here” she muttered .

He stepped in with the same quiet confidence as before, dressed differently this time—less formal, yet no less striking.

A fitted dark jacket rested perfectly on his shoulders, and his presence carried something she couldn’t quite explain.

Maria swallowed, steadying herself.

“Focus.

Just do your job.”

She picked up her notepad and approached him with a polite smile, though her heart beat betrayed her calm expression.

“Good afternoon,” she said gently.

“What would you like today?”

The man looked up, and for a brief second, their eyes locked.

There it was again, that strange pull.

A slow smile spread across his face, soft but knowing.

“You again,” he said, his voice low and smooth and make her want to melt.

Maria felt a slight warmth creep into her cheeks, but she kept her composure.

“Yes,” she replied, trying to sound professional.

“I work here.”

He chuckled softly, clearly amused.

“I’m glad you do.”

Something about the way he said it made her chest tighten.

She quickly looked down at her notepad.

“Your order?”

“Coffee,” he said.

“same as yesterday and… maybe a conversation, if that’s allowed.”

Maria paused.

Her pen hovered over the page.

A conversation?

She hesitated for just a second before nodding.

“We’ll see about that.”

His smile widened slightly, as if he enjoyed the challenge.

When she returned with his coffee, she placed it gently on the table.

“Here you go.”

“Thank you…” he paused, watching her closely.

“I don’t think I know your name”

Maria hesitated again.

Why did it feel like giving her name mattered more than it should?

“Maria,” he said softly.

He leaned back slightly, as if tasting the name.

“Maria,” he repeated.

“It suits you.”

She raised an eyebrow, half amused, half cautious.

“And what does that mean?”

“It means,” he said, leaning forward just a little, “it sounds like someone who doesn’t belong behind a counter.”

Her breath caught for a moment, she didn’t know what to say.

Who was this man?

She quickly recovered.

“And you?

Do you always analyze strangers like that?”

“My name is Alexandre.”

She nodded slowly.

“Nice to meet you, Alexandre.”

There was a brief silence not awkward.

“You seem new in Paris,” he said.

“I am,” she admitted.

“I came for a holiday.”

“Just a holiday?” he asked, his eyes searching hers.

She shrugged lightly.

“Maybe more.

I needed… a change.” He studied her for a moment longer than necessary.

“As in running away?” he asked quietly.

The question hit deeper than she expected.

Maria looked away, her fingers tightening slightly around her notepad.

“Something like that,” she said for the first time, his expression softened—not playful, not teasing, but understanding knowing that it is her secrete.

“I get that,” he murmured.

A few minutes later, the atmosphere shifted again.

Alexandre suddenly reached for a napkin and a pen.

“Hey,” he said, a spark of excitement in his eyes.

“Can you solve this?”

Maria blinked.

“What?”

He turned the napkin toward her.

A math problem was scribbled across it, complex enough to challenge most people.

Her lips curved into a small smile.

“That’s a classic,” she said.

She picked up the pen without hesitation, her earlier nervousness melting into quiet confidence.

Numbers had always been her safe place—predictable, logical, controllable.

Unlike people.

Her hand moved swiftly across the napkin, solving the equation step by step.

Alexandre watched her closely, his gaze filled with something deeper now admiration.

Within moments, she slid the napkin back to him.

“There,” she said simply.

He looked down… then back up at her, genuinely impressed.

“You did that faster than I expected,” he said.

Maria shrugged, but a small spark of pride lit up inside her.

“It’s all about patterns,” she replied.

He leaned back, shaking his head slightly.

“I’ve been stuck on that for hours when I was still in college “.

She smirked faintly.

“Then you were looking at it the wrong way.”

Their eyes met again.

This time, neither of them looked away.

As the conversation continued, Maria couldn’t ignore the strange feeling growing inside her.

There was something off about it.

She noticed the way Alexandre’s eyes occasionally drifted toward the door.

The way his posture shifted slightly whenever someone new walked in.

The way he seemed both relaxed and alert at the same time.

“Who are you?” she asked suddenly.

The question slipped out before she could stop herself.

He blinked, surprised.e

“What do you mean?”

“I mean,” she said, crossing her arms slightly, “you don’t act like a normal customer.”

He chuckled.

“And what does a normal customer act like?”

“Not like someone who’s… watching everything,” she replied.

He tilted his head, considering her words for a moment, he didn’t answer.

Then he leaned in slightly, lowering his voice.

“I’m just a guy who always act with caution,” he said.

Maria raised an eyebrow.

“Just a guy?, I have seen your face on Paris bill board before “.

She studied him carefully, then smiled faintly.

He sighed, leaning back again.

“So much for keeping a low profile.”

“So it’s true?” she asked.

He hesitated… then nodded.

“Yes.”

Maria felt a strange mix of excitement and disbelief.

“You’re a racer?”

“Among other things,” he said.

She leaned in slightly now, mirroring his earlier posture.

“What’s it like?”

For the first time, his expression changed completely.

“It’s…” he paused, searching for the right words.

“It’s like standing on the edge of control.”

Maria listened, completely drawn in.

“You’re moving so fast,” he continued, his voice quieter now, “that one mistake can cost everything.

But at the same time… it’s the only moment you feel completely alive.” He breath slowed.

There was passion in his voice, a real one.

“Doesn’t that scare you?” she asked softly.

He looked at her.

“It terrifies me,” he admitted.

A small silence settled between them.

“But you still do it,” she said.

He nodded.

“Because I can’t imagine not doing it.”

Maria felt a shiver run through her from understanding.

Time seemed to blur as they talked.

What started as a simple conversation turned into something deeper.

They spoke about dreams, about fears and about the strange paths life takes.

Maria found herself laughing more than she had in weeks.

The weight she had carried into Paris felt lighter, almost forgotten.

And Alexandre…

He found himself staying longer than he planned.

At some point, their conversation slowed, not because there was nothing left to say, but because neither of them wanted to break the moment.

Maria looked at him, really looked this time.

He wasn’t just charming, he wasn’t just mysterious but he was… real, complicated and passionate.

And somehow, in just a short time, he had made her feel seen in a way she hadn’t felt in a long time.

“You’re different,” she said quietly.

He smiled faintly.

“So are you.”

She shook her head.

“No.

I mean it.

There’s more to you than what you’re saying.” He held her gaze.

“And there’s more to you than what you’re showing,” he replied.

“Are you done with college?” Maria asked

“Yeah, finished two years ago and you are still in college?”

” Yes, like I said I am here for holiday”

“It is nice to come to a new city”

Her heart skipped for a moment, neither of them spoke.

The world around them faded into the background with just two people standing at the edge of something neither of them fully understood.

Eventually, Maria stood up.

“I should get back to work,” she said softly.

He nodded, though something in his eyes suggested he didn’t want her to leave.

“Will you be here tomorrow?” he asked.

“Yes.”

“Good,” he said.

She turned to walk away… then paused.

“And Alexandre?”

“Yes?”

“Try not to spend hours on simple math problems,” she teased.

He laughed, the sound warm and genuine.

“I’ll try.”

As she walked back behind the counter, Maria felt something unfamiliar settle in her chest.

Hope.

And for the first time since arriving in Paris, she wasn’t just running from her past.

She was… looking forward to something.

To him.
