The moment my foot crossed the groove, the circle drank.

It didn't hurt, exactly. It was worse than hurt. It was the specific horror of feeling something reach into the well Lila had taught me about, the deep place where the aura lived, and pull — a steady, patient draw, my whole strange inheritance running out of me and down into the stone like water finding a drain. The symbols filled with cold light, groove by groove, brighter than Yrsa's resin had ever made them. Around the clearing, the leaning trees stood up straight.

"It's working," Yrsa breathed, and there was a thousand years of grief and hope in it. "It's taking. No Warden has seen a circle drink since—"

The vision at the ring's center tore open on its own.

Not thin this time. Open. A hole in the world the width of a door, and through it the churning dark forest, close enough to smell — rot and cold and old blood — and through it, drawn by the sudden bright hum of a waking ward and the brighter beacon of the King standing in it, came a hand.

It was the size of a cart. It was made of root and bone and things that had been animals once, fused wrong. It closed on the lip of the hole, and it pulled, and a deep-wilds thing began to haul itself up into the world through a lid I had just, apparently, propped open by trying to shut.

[Threat breaching ward: Deepwilds Horror.][Estimated rank: D.][Ward integrity: insufficient. King's presence required to seal.]

"Adrian, DON'T STOP FEEDING IT," Yrsa roared, "if you step out now the ward drops and the hole stays open—"

"He can't fight and feed it at once!" Vera was already moving, daggers out. "Bruno, Lila — the hand, the hand, don't let it get its shoulders through! Adrian, you STAY IN THE RING!"

So I stayed in the ring, pouring myself into ancient stone, while a nightmare from under the world dragged itself into the firelight and my friends threw themselves at it.

The story has been taken without consent; if you see it on Amazon, report the incident.

It was too big for us. I knew it in the first three seconds — this was a Rank D thing and we were four Rank E kids and a wolf, and Bruno's sword rang off its hide like a stick off a wall, and Lila's fire guttered against a hide grown in a place the sun never reached. It got a shoulder through. Then an arm. Vera opened a gash along its wrist and it backhanded her into a tree hard enough that the echo of it drove the breath out of me even standing in the ring, my ribs screaming her pain, my hands never leaving the stone.

And I understood, standing there feeding a wall while my family lost a fight in front of me, that the rule had run out.

No Mantle. Fight quiet. Someone will feel it.

We were four days deep in a wilderness no bounty man would ever reach. There was no one out here to feel it but the thing crawling up out of hell. And I was done watching them bleed for my secret.

"YRSA," I shouted. "Can it feed and fight? Can I hold the ward and still—"

"You're the King," she snarled, gripping her staff. "The ward is you. Stop asking permission and be it—"

So I stopped asking permission.

I kept one foot in the ring, and I let the rest of me go. Not a flood this time — I'd learned something in those quiet evenings past the palisade. Precision. The Mantle came off my shoulders not as a hundred wild claws but as a dozen aimed ones, each a spear of living dark, and they went past my friends without touching them and drove into the Deepwilds Horror all at once — and this it felt. This, the thing from the country of teeth understood. The King's own darkness, sinking into it, and every beast-instinct it had crashing up against the ancient command buried in the shadow: heel. Get down. Get back.

It shrieked. It hauled backward. And with the ward blazing at my back lending me something I have no words for, I pushed — shadow and presence and the whole waking weight of a circle a thousand years old — and shoved the thing back down through the hole it had crawled out of, and the lid slammed shut behind it, and the vision winked out, and the clearing was just a clearing, ringing with silence and cold light.

I dropped to my knees in the middle of a circle that now glowed like a small moon.

[Ward restored: full integrity.][Deepwilds breach: sealed.][Rank E: progress 68%.]

Yrsa was staring at the ring. At the light in it. At me.

"A thousand years," she whispered, "and I have never once seen one full." She looked at me, and it wasn't the wary look anymore, and it wasn't hope either, exactly. It was closer to dread. "You didn't just feed it, boy. You are it. Do you understand what that means?"

I didn't. But I was about to.
