Chapter 8: The Shattered Mirror

Ranoka and the 13th Labyrinth

Talestia's Perspective:

The cold, heavy ring of the iron-shackled cells on the second floor didn't bother me half as much as the quietness of the princess's stride.

I leaned my weight hard against the stone-brick masonry, keeping my left hand anchored firmly on the upper lip of my steel-reinforced tower shield. Kirra's Expression remained as frozen and unyielding as a corporate vault door. Her long, vibrant purple hair caught the damp green reflection of the ambient fay lights as she stepped cleanly toward the dark opening of the spiral staircase.

"Initializing the transition phase," Kirra’s flat, deadpan voice echoed off the wet ceiling joints, carrying that strange, modern accountant rhythm she always used when we were about to hit a hazardous deployment zone. "Keep your parameters tight. The second floor is officially cleared from our books."

"I'll scout ahead," she added nervously.

Before my amber eyes could even track her weight shifting onto the first wet stone riser, a soft, high-voltage hum crackled through the humid air boards. Kirra executed her stealth sub-routines. With zero microsecond latency, her forty-year-old elven hybrid frame distorted, the deep-green leather of her ranger vest and the white feathers of her snow-owl tail fading smoothly into the shadows until her physical outline vanished entirely under an un-throttled layer of active camouflage.

The silence of the final room stretched thin. Drip. Drip. Drop. The fast black river cut down the middle of the room, its low roar the only steady frequency left in the chamber.

"She's getting fast," I grunted, a bold, appreciative grin breaking across my sun-bronzed face as I adjusted the heavy slate-grey armadillo carapace plates along my broad shoulders. "Ten years of running kiting loops around those Floor 2 frog grunts really sharpened her motor interactions."

The minutes passed. First five, then ten.

But Kirra didn't re-emerge from the stairwell.

"Where is she?" Fraya asked nervously, her white rabbit ears spinning frantically before flattening completely against her sky-blue hair. "...tweet!"

"I don't know," I replied, a sudden, cold sense of panic beginning to take hold of my chest.

The silence of the room felt ten times heavier now. Kirra was an elite kiter; she never overstayed a baseline scouting timer without checking in or sending a macro alert. Something down there had completely broken her operational sequence.

"We should go look for her," I suggested, my jaw tightening as I stepped away from the stone wall, firmly raising my steel-reinforced tower shield and heading towards the steps.

As I closed the distance to the dark spiral opening, a heavy, scraping sound echoed from the abyss.

A figure wrapped completely in a heavy, pitch-black cloak came walking up the steps. The camouflage shroud was so dense that it completely absorbed the emerald fay light of the room, acting as an un-throttled visual barrier against our tracking window. It was a cloaked man where only his glowing red eyes and sharp, dagger-like teeth were visible through the shifting folds of the fabric. The rest of his physical frame was totally swallowed by the shadow, his crimson gaze locking onto us with a predatory, mocking glare that made my armadillo ears instantly twitch in disgust.

"You won't be going anywhere," the monster hissed, his voice sounding like grinding rusted iron as those sharp, visible teeth bared in a jagged grin. "I've come to play with you little girlies for a moment or two."

I looked on at the monster's presence before us. The raw, oppressive weight of his aura pressed down hard on the room, but my vanguard training took over. I braced my boots against the wet stone brick and shouted fiercely at him.

"Where is Princess Kirra?! What have you done to her?!"

"Heheheheheheheeheheh!"

The cloaked man gleefully gleemed, his sharp, dagger-like teeth flashing hideously in the darkness of his shroud. "She's been taken by goblins! Sent through my portal already, long outside the dungeon! You're too late, girlies!"

Before the horrifying words could even fully process in my brain, the phantom figure lunged. He charged forward, blade in hand, moving with a terrifying, zero-latency speed that completely bypassed my defensive radar lines.

In that split second of mortal peril, as the dark steel of his weapon flashed toward me, a sharp memory locked into my mind. I remembered exactly what Captain Kristorf had secretly given me back at the wood-skin merchant shop—the tiny, off-the-books item he had pressed into my palm while whispering in my ear.

"This is a Blink Crystal," Kristorf's deep, weathered voice echoed in my memory. "One of only three made by the former High Queen herself. Break it if Kirra is ever in danger, and you cannot surmount the foe that stands before you. It will summon me directly to your side."

I didn't hesitate. I reached frantically into the deepest pouch of my vanguard harness.

Right as his blade pierced my chest, cutting straight through my armor with agonizing force, my fingers clamped onto the tiny artifact. Summoning every ounce of my remaining strength, I forcefully slammed the Blink Crystal against the stone-brick ground, smashing it into pieces.

The shard fragments of the shattered crystal hadn't even finished bouncing across the wet stones before the entire 40 by 50-foot room violently convulsed.

A blinding, cataclysmic eruption of white-hot divine light detonated right from the point of impact, tearing through the dark masonry and instantly vaporizing the freezing dungeon mist. The sheer kinetic shockwave of the magical displacement sent a violent rumble through the bedrock of the second floor.

Kristorf instantly appeared in a flash of divine light right before the cloaked man could finish me off.

The six-foot fortress-class Knight Commander materialized dead center in the blinding glare, his absolute plates of gleaming Mithril armor humming with thousands of volts of residual mana. His long green hair, bound tightly in its practical warrior's ponytail, whipped wildly around his deeply weathered and aged face. His old elven eyes flashed with an un-throttled, apocalyptic fury as he immediately positioned his six-foot frame directly between my bleeding chest and the attacker, his scarred cheeks catching the harsh reflection of the light. Before the cloaked man's weapon could drive any deeper, Kristorf’s massive gauntlet slammed forward like a solid iron firewall, deflecting the killing vector with a deafening clank that echoed across the prison cells.

But the cloaked man didn't flinch.

Instead, the phantom figure fluidly glided backward through the air, his tattered amethyst-tinted shroud twisting around his silhouette as his glowing crimson eyes flared with absolute, psychotic satisfaction. He bared his sharp, dagger-like teeth in a hideous grin, his voice rattling like rusted chainlinks as he gleemed, cackling loudly into the steaming air.

"Hahaha... you've fallen right into our trap, Kristorf!" the #10 Pillar mocked, his tattered cloak billowing under the raw pressure of the Paladin's divine radiation. "You're late! You're always too late!"

The cloaked villain's psychotic cackling echoed horribly off the wet stone bricks, but Captain Kristorf didn't waste a single heartbeat on the monster's mocking words. Completely ignoring the creature's presence, the six-foot Knight Commander fluidly pivoted his heavy Mithril-plated frame away from the staircase, his veteran eyes instantly locking onto my bleeding chest and Fraya's trembling form.

Raising his massive gauntlets, a warm, blinding wave of holy sylvan light erupted from his hands, washing smoothly over my plummeted armor and Fraya's soot-stained tunic. The pure, divine magic worked instantly. The burning agony in my chest vanished in a flash of soothing green light, my shattered breastplate fusing back together as raw, vibrant energy flooded back into my muscles.

"Are you two okay?!" Kristorf barked, his deep voice filled with absolute terror for our safety as his long green ponytail whipped over his shoulder plates. His deeply weathered face contorted as his eyes scanned the empty cell blocks. "Where is Princess Kirra?! What happened?!"

The cloaked monster stood just a few feet away near the dark spiral opening, his sharp, dagger-like teeth still bared in a hideous grin inside his tattered shroud, but Kristorf completely shut him out. To the ancient Befredon knight, nothing in this world mattered more than the safety of the royal bloodline.

"She went down the stairs to scout ahead!" I yelled out quickly, forcing myself back onto my feet and gripping the pommel of my crackling Anfibus Blade with fierce, burning rage. My heart was pounding for my friend. "She's been down there for ten minutes! That cloaked demon just came up from the dark and said she was ambushed by a pack of goblins!"

"He... he said she was already thrown through a magical portal... tweet!" Fraya screamed in absolute panic, her white rabbit ears spinning frantically beneath her towel wrap as she clutched her notebook tightly against her chest. "He said she's already long outside the dungeon boundaries! We were too late to save her!"

The moment Fraya’s frantic words left her mouth, the air in the 40 by 50-foot room completely froze.

Captain Kristorf’s weathered face turned an ashen, terrifying shade of pure white. For a single heartbeat, the ancient Befredon knight looked completely struck with horror, his hand gripping tightly onto the pommel of his blade. But as he looked down at Fraya and me standing battered against the wet stone walls, he forced the overwhelming shock down, his old eyes softening with absolute, fierce protectiveness.

"Listen to me, both of you," Kristorf said, his deep voice carrying a heavy, vibrating tremor of raw fury, yet remaining remarkably gentle as he looked us in the eyes. "This is not your fault. Do you hear me? You did exactly what you were trained to do. Do not let the guilt take your footing."

He turned his six-foot frame back toward the spiral staircase, and the gentle reassurance vanished instantly from his posture. A dark, suffocating wave of pure, unadulterated divine pressure violently detonated off his Mithril armor, cracking the stone-brick floorboards beneath his heavy steel boots. His long green hair whipped wildly into the air as he drew his massive greatsword, the bare metal screaming with white-hot radiant plasma energy that completely blinded the room.

The final room of the second floor completely fractured under the weight of two cosmic forces crashing together. It wasn't a standard skirmish between dungeon divers—it was a clash between two legendary Pillars of the Realm, and every single shockwave threatened to pull the stone ceiling down right on top of our heads.

Kristorf didn't hesitate. He immediately initialized his combat directory, activating his [Holy Taunt]. A roaring wave of blinding, supercharged golden energy violently detonated outward from his six-foot frame, sweeping across the 40 by 50-foot room like a physical tidal wave. The massive, continent-scale forced aggro ring locked dead center onto the shadowy target, forcing the cloaked phantom's crimson eyes to lock onto the Knight Commander with absolute, unmanaged hostility.

"You want to play, creature?!" Kristorf roared, his voice shaking the stone-brick floorboards as he charged forward like a runaway fortress, his long green hair whipping wildly over his armor. "Then I will carve your black soul out of the world's ledger!"

With a deafening explosion of kinetic force, Kristorf closed the distance in a fraction of a second, bringing his greatsword down in a terrifying [Holy Slash]. The bare metal screamed as white-hot radiant plasma energy coated the blade, slicing through the air in a perfect vertical cleaving arc straight toward the enemy's head.

BOOM!

The cloaked spellblade glided backward with impossible, liquid dexterity, drawing his twin black serrated daggers just in time to deflect the massive blow. The #10 Pillar bared his sharp, dagger-like teeth through the shifting black folds of his tattered shroud, his crimson eyes flaring with absolute excitement as his unique passive activated. The phantom’s unique passive engine immediately whirred to life, tracking the divine matrix of the strike to copy it into his own system directory.

Before Kristorf could pull back his greatsword, the villain countered by activating his [Dark Blade] matrix, infusing his twin daggers with tattered, corrosive dark matter energy that sliced viciously at the joints of the Captain’s armor.

Kristorf’s veteran combat experience saved his life grid. Relying on his god-class motor reflex dexterity, he executed a lightning-fast [Stunning Bash], slamming the heavy edge of his shield forward to disrupt the dark matter combo line. A heavy kinetic shockwave erupted on contact, paralyzing the spellblade’s spatial coordinate movement lines for a split second.

The shockwave radiated across the chamber floorboards, grinding the cracked brick into fine powder. The cloaked spellblade did not falter; his god-class cellular wall constitution anchored his frame against the absolute kinetic impact. Siphoning ninety-nine percent of the ambient divine energy bleeding off Kristorf's aura, the phantom spun on his heel, using the stolen momentum to launch a rapid [Dark Bullet] payload straight from his fingertips. The unmanaged ammunition projectiles whistled through the steam, tearing chunked rents out of the stone cells on the right.

Kristorf angled his massive shield, deflecting the dark projectiles into the dark subterranean river. One of the corrupted elements scraped past his shoulder plate, leaving a smoking, corrosive scar on his pristine silver armaments.

"Fraya, stay back!" I yelled out fiercely, raising my steel-reinforced tower shield to shield her small frame as the residual mana shockwaves sent stone splinters raining over the cell blocks. My amber eyes were locked wide in awe and terror. "This is far beyond our intermediate level! Keep your healing light ready!"

"P-Please stay alive... tweet!" Fraya squeaked in pure terror, her white rabbit ears pinning flat against her sky-blue hair as she fiercely clutched her ledger notebook against her chest, her fingers flying to monitor the Captain's volatile stats.

The long, brutal fight ensued with terrifying velocity.

The room grew suffocatingly dense as Kristorf triggered [Armor of the Divine King]. His massive greatsword hummed with an elevated light value, installing an ironclad holy shield grid directly across his physical defense values. He lunged forward again, his boots clearing the wide trench of the river in a single bound. The blade came down in a wide horizontal sweep, designed to sever the enemy at the waist line.

The #10 Pillar utilized his active spell slots, executing [Teleportation]. He vanished into thin air, entirely bypassing Kristorf's active radar tracking window before reappearing directly above the Captain’s flank. Bringing his twin daggers down in a dual piercing vector, the spellblade attempted to drive the corrosive points straight through the neck seals of Kristorf’s helm.

Kristorf didn't look back. Relying on sheer zero-latency instinct, he ducked his head, throwing his entire six-foot chassis into a heavy roll across the stone bricks. The daggers scraped loudly against his back plates, carving out a shower of white-hot sparks that illuminated the dark, skeletal remains inside the open prison cages.

The phantom laughed again, a high-pitched, metallic rasp that cut straight through the roaring sounds of the river. Without breaking his geographic alignment, he gestured with his left gauntlet toward the middle of the room. The dark currents of the subterranean water began to warp, swirling upward into a violent vortex as he initialized [Summon Wrath].

A massive, corrupted entity payload materialized out of the dark water, forming a towering, formless titan of shifting shadows and jagged ice teeth. The creature roared, unleashing a chaos-tier destruction field across the entire forty by fifty-foot sector. The ceiling shook violently, and chunks of living wood trunk from the city infrastructure above began to drop into the pool.

Seeing the destructive payload targeting Fraya and me, Kristorf violently pushed his cell walls to the limit. He activated his unique passive [Turtle Shell Barrier], generating a massive, high-voltage radiant dome of divine light that completely encased our positions, absorbing one hundred percent of the wrathful entity's explosive force before it could touch us.

The radiant golden dome hummed with massive power, deflecting the jagged ice shards and dark matter wave lines away from our cowering forms. Fraya fell to her knees, her eyes wide as she rapidly tracked the downward trajectory of Kristorf’s mana reserves on her ledger interface.

"He's burning through his internal reservoir too fast!" Fraya screamed over the din of the explosion. "The mimicry enemy is feeding on his output lines! The data values don't balance!"

Maintaining the barrier stretched Kristorf's resources thin. His weathered face was drenched in sweat, his chest heaving under the strain of holding a god-class containment matrix while keeping his own physical hull from hitting terminal execution status.

Seizing the opening, the cloaked villain initiated another [Teleportation] loop. He vanished from the staircase riser, reappearing directly in the blind spot behind Kristorf's left shoulder. The spellblade’s daggers flared as he initiated a devastating [Black Hole] gravitational singularity core, forcefully compressing the air around Kristorf's flank.

The gravitational pull tore at Kristorf’s footing, dragging his heavy steel boots toward the crushing center of the singularity.

Kristorf spun around, swinging his greatsword with a final, desperate surge of his god-class muscular force to shatter the gravity well. The blade collided with the dense core of the singularity, creating an ear-splitting implosion that shattered every single iron bar cell block lining the right wall. The humanoid frog skeletons were instantly reduced to gray dust, sucked directly into the void before the magic collapsed.

But the redirection left his flank completely exposed.

The #10 Pillar glided through the dust cloud, his twin serrated daggers moving along a zero-latency horizontal vector. The black blades ripped through his armor plates with an agonizing, screeching tear of metal. A giant, horrifying wound tore open into Kristorf's side, deep-red blood spilling across his silver plating as the kinetic impact propelled his six-foot frame hard against the stone brick cells.

Kristorf stumbled, gasping for breath as he drove the tip of his greatsword into the floor to keep his balance, his divine resources redlining.

The cloaked villain glided backward toward the spiral stairs, his tattered amethyst cloak billowing around his dark silhouette. He didn't finish the execution loop; instead, he initiated his active stealth, utilizing [Shadow Hide]. His physical form began to blur into total system darkness, his glowing red eyes and dagger-like teeth the final assets fading into the shadows as he vanished completely from our visual range.

His mocking, cackling voice echoed through the wet chamber one final time, rattling like rusted chains:

"Hahaha... you're always too late, Kristorf!"

The final echo faded, leaving the room in a semi-draw. The villain had vanished, but Kristorf was still standing, his hand clutching the massive, bleeding wound in his side.

"Captain!" I cried out, rushing forward to help support his heavy frame, my heart shattering for the proud veteran.

Kristorf slowly shook his head, his weathered elven face completely pale as his green hair ponytail hung loose over his chest. He didn't waste a single second on his own agony. Reaching down into a secret compartment beneath his breastplate, he pulled out his second to last Blink Crystal with a trembling, blood-stained gauntlet.

"The princess... is the only metric that matters," Kristorf rasped, his deep voice cracking with un-yielding devotion to the Befredon bloodline as he looked up at the ceiling.

With a final, desperate surge of his god-class muscular force, he forcefully shattered the crystal directly against the ground. The broken shards instantly triggered a blinding, absolute explosion of radiant energy, and before Fraya or I could even scream his name, Guard Captain Kristorf vanished entirely in a brilliant blaze of pure white light, launching his coordinates straight out of the dungeon to hunt down the goblin trail.
