Ariel’s POV
Morning came sooner than I expected.
Golden sunlight spilled through the broken windows of the institute.
For the first time since everything changed…
The city was quiet.
No Echoes.
No Phantoms.
Almost as if the world was waiting for something.
I stretched before looking toward James.
Unlike yesterday, he wasn’t eager to head underground.
Instead, he stood by the entrance, adjusting his backpack.
“Wait.”
“I need to confirm something first.”
Luther looked up.
“…What is it?”
“I need my system.”
Luther nodded.
“…Lead the way.”
An hour later…
We arrived at James’ apartment.
The place was untouched.
His workstation was exactly as he’d left it.
Several monitors lined the desk, connected to a custom-built computer that looked more powerful than anything I’d ever seen.
James immediately sat down.
His fingers flew across the keyboard.
Lines of code scrolled endlessly across the monitors.
Minutes passed.
Then…
His hands stopped.
“I knew it…”
He whispered.
Luther stepped closer.
“What did you find?”
James took a deep breath.
“I’ve been thinking about everything that’s happened.”
“The Reality Update.”
“The Echoes.”
“The Status Windows.”
“The monsters.”
“It all points to one thing.”
He brought up a map on the monitor.
A single point blinked in the distance.
“Genesis only evolved because of one thing.”
“The AI.”
“If it hadn’t continued learning…”
“None of this would’ve happened.”
He zoomed in on the blinking signal.
“Using the fragments of data I recovered from the institute…”
“I traced the energy signature.”
“The exact same one.”
Silence filled the room.
I watched Luther’s expression change.
The pieces were finally falling into place.
“…So it survived.”
James nodded.
“And it’s somewhere…”
He pointed at the flashing marker.
“…There.”
I swallowed.
“So…”
“What do we do now?”
Luther stared at the screen for several moments before answering.
His voice was calm.
Determined.
“We find NEXUS.”
“And we stop it.”
“If we don’t…”
He looked out the window toward the distant skyline.
“…Reality may never return.”
None of us spoke again.
For the first time…
We had a destination.
But none of us knew…
Whether we were walking toward humanity’s salvation…
Or straight into its greatest trap.
