Oliver slowly regained consciousness.
His head felt strangely light, yet every movement sent a dull ache through his skull.
Sitting up against the bed, he rubbed the back of his head and let out a groan.
“That fucking specs nerd guy…” he thought.
“Next time I get my hands on that guy I’ll fucking beat the shit out of him.”
The impact hadn’t done any real damage to his steel-like body, but his brain definitely disagreed.
“Well…” a sweet, velvety voice drifted across the room.
“You certainly have an unusual body.”
Oliver turned toward the voice.
His eyes widened.
Standing a few steps away was a woman wearing what could technically be called a nurse’s uniform, although it looked more like something borrowed from an expensive nightclub than a hospital.
The white dress was tailored to perfection, with a deep V-neck, a short skirt, and heels that had no business being worn in an infirmary.
Her long dark hair framed an impossibly beautiful face, and she watched him with amused blue eyes while slowly running her tongue across her lips, as though she had just discovered something fascinating.
Oliver stared.
Then stared a little longer.
“Did that gargoyle hit me harder than I thought?” he wondered.
“There’s no way someone who looks like that works as a nurse.”
He discreetly pinched the back of his hand.
It hurt.
“Not dreaming.”
The woman tilted her head, the smile on her face growing just a little wider.
“Oh, don’t look so alarmed,” she purred.
“I’ve been called many things over the centuries. ‘Nurse’ just happens to be today’s disguise.”
Oliver frowned.
“…Disguise?”
“Of course.”
She took an unhurried step closer.
“I’ve been a queen, a lawyer, a fortune teller, a flight attendant…” She paused, smiling to herself.
“People trust uniforms. They rarely question them.”
Oliver stared at her for a long moment.
“…You’re insane.”
Her smile brightened.
“That’s usually the second guess.”
“And the first?”
“Hallucination.”
“…You can read minds?”
“I don’t need to.” She gestured lazily toward him.
“Anyone waking up after being struck by a gargoyle would naturally assume they’d suffered brain damage before accepting the far more interesting explanation.”
She extended a hand with theatrical elegance.
“My dear Oliver…”
“…I’m the Devil.”
Oliver looked at her with a deadpan expression.
“Yeah,” he said.
“And I’m the omniverse god.”
Instead of taking offense, the woman let out a delighted laugh.
“I do adore skeptics.”
Before Oliver could respond, she slipped onto the bed with effortless grace and knelt beside him, resting one hand on the mattress.
She leaned in just enough to invade his personal space, wearing the same playful smile.
Oliver instinctively leaned back.
“Umm… I don’t know whether you’re actually the Devil or not, but this is a giant violation of personal space. I’m going to call someone.”
“Go right ahead,” she purred, making no effort to move aside.
“I’d be disappointed if you didn’t.”
Oliver frowned before raising his voice.
“Hello? Is anyone there? There’s a strange woman in here!”
Silence.
The woman smiled knowingly.
“I told you,” she said, folding her hands in her lap.
“No one is coming.”
Oliver looked toward the curtain, then back at her.
“…Okay, that’s mildly concerning.”
“It should be.”
She leaned forward slightly, her emerald eyes gleaming with amusement.
“Now that we’ve established we’re not going to be interrupted, shall we move on to the exciting part?”
Oliver narrowed his eyes.
“And what’s that?”
The woman smiled, as though she had been waiting for him to ask.
“I’ll grant you seven wishes.”
Oliver blinked.
“…Seven?”
“Anything your heart desires. Wealth. Fame. Power. Love. Revenge. Knowledge.” She shrugged elegantly.
“Whatever you wish.”
Oliver stared at her for a long moment. Follow the newest chapters on g.com.
“…What’s the catch?”
“There always is one.” Her smile widened.
“When our little arrangement is over, your soul belongs to me.”
She said it as casually as someone discussing the weather.
“One ordinary soul in exchange for seven extraordinary wishes.”
She tilted her head.
“Tell me, Oliver…” she said with a dazzling smile.
“Doesn’t that sound like a wonderfully unfair bargain?”
“Nope,” said Oliver.
He valued his soul more than anything.
“Seven wishes… think about it. You can have everything. Love, wealth, power… anything,” she said, her voice as sweet as honey.
“Nope. Nothing like this is ever free,” said Oliver.
His answer only seemed to amuse the woman.
Smiling, she slowly lifted her hand and lazily traced small circles over the center of his chest.
Oliver frowned but didn’t move, watching her with a suspicious look.
“…Wow,” she murmured, her smile widening.
“You really are something.”
She closed her eyes for a brief moment as though savoring something only she could sense.
“I can definitely feel it…” she whispered before opening her eyes again.
They gleamed with excitement.
“Your soul will be the most special one I’ve ever collected.”
She licked her lips with playful anticipation.
“I can’t wait to eat it.”
Before Oliver could reply, she snapped her fingers.
In the next instant, she vanished without a trace.
The only thing she left behind was a sleek black visiting card resting on the bed.
Across the front, in elegant silver letters, was a single word.
DEVIL
Oliver turned it over.
A bright crimson lipstick mark decorated the back, beneath which was a handwritten message.
Just call me if you change your mind.
