The air rippled in front of me, And Hestia stepped out of nothing.
Not as a distant voice.
Not as a whisper.
Not as a spiritual cutscene in my head.
She materialized right in front of me. A goddess…. In person.
I scrambled backward so fast I nearly fell over. “W‑Wait…you…you’re here?! Like…HERE here?!”
Her flames softened.
“Yes, little fragment.”
I swallowed hard. My heart was pounding so fast I could feel my blood pumping in my veins.
“Okay…okay, first of all what was that…back there, in the void, also…you called me…you said…”My voice squeaked. As she cut me off.
“My child…?”Her flames pulsed gently as she spoke“Because you are.”
My brain blue screened. Full on crashed. [Brain.exe] encountered an unexpected error.
“I….I’m WHAT?! Why… how me.. I mean.”
Hestia stepped closer, her presence warm enough to make the air shimmer.
“You wished to understand, so you shall.”
I shook my head violently. “No… no, I didn’t wish for… for THIS,I just…I just said I would be your champion. Why say that I’m your child!?!”
“Because it is truth.”
Her voice wrapped around me like a blanket and an embrace at the same time.
“You died, Kris.”
Everything inside me stopped, my thoughts, breath, and heartbeat, it grinded to a halt.my vision went dark around the edges.
“…What?… waitwaitwait. You can’t just drop that on me like a Sunday sales paper.”
She continued. “You died that day.”
Her flames dimmed, sorrowful.
“In your world, And in this one.”
My stomach dropped through the floor.
“No. No, I…I respawned..I woke up…I,”
“Your body did not survive the In‑Between.”
I felt sick. This couldn’t be real. There’s no way. But my brain wast telling me that she wasn’t lying.
“But, but I’m here. I’m alive.” Sounding deflated.
“Because I intervened, and you became the link that tethers me to both worlds. Hence the cryptic messages trying to warn you. To bring you back here. It was all I could muster in the moment, but the link is becoming stronger,
It takes a monumental effort to speak across the chasm between worlds. More than I should spend.”
Her hand, a shape of warm flame hovered near my cheek, resonating. Curious…”
“W..what is…”
“The In‑Between chose you. It simultaneously destroyed you, and marked you. Claimed you so to speak.”
I shook my head, trembling. “I don’t…I don’t understand?”
“To save you from…,dispersing, I had to give you a part of myself, balance.”
The world tilted.
“What… what does that mean?”
Her voice softened, unbearably gentle.
“It means you carry my essence.”
My throat closed.
“It means you are of me.”
My vision blurred.
“It means you are my daughter. Although I have yet to name you., but that can wait for later.”
I made a noise that wasn’t even a word, a strangled, panicked squeak.
“Daughter!?! My…my mother … you’re my goddess?!”
“Yes.”
I slapped both hands over my face.
“Oh my god…oh my god…oh my…YOU’RE my god…I mean…you’re…I…WHAT IS HAPPENING?!”
Hestia waited patiently as I had what could only be described as a full body existential meltdown.
I paced in a tiny circle. To the right, and then to the left.
I tugged at my hair.
I made a noise like a dying kettle.
I sat down.
I stood up.
I sat down again.
Finally, I croaked, “Why me?”
Hestia’s flames flickered.
“Because the In‑Between chose you.”
“And you just went along with it?!”
“Balance must be persevered, so I saved you.”
I opened my mouth.
Closed it.
Opened it again.
“…Thank you?”
It came out like a question.
Her flames warmed like roasting marshmallows. A smile or what felt like a smile through the warmth.
“You are welcome, daughter.”
I groaned into my hands. “Please don’t call me that.”
“You are my child. I will call you what you are.”
My soul left my body.
“Okay, okay fine, whatever….but what does this mean for everything else? For the world? For me?”
Hestia’s expression, or the impression of one grew serious.
“Because of the tampering, the two worlds are drawing closer.”
The sky flickered at the edges.
“Soon, all will notice.”
My heart thudded painfully.
“Notice what?”
“The seams.”
A chill ran down my back.
“Those who walk the paths of Divine Law Online will begin to change. The balance must be upheld. Even for me.” The last part was quiet almost ominous.
My breath caught.
“Charlie… Riley…”
“They are bound to you. They will feel the change sooner than most.”
I felt my chest tighten.
“And me?” I whispered. “What happens to me?”
Hestia knelt lowering herself until her face of flame was level with mine. Her voice was soft, Warm. Unshakably certain.
“You will become what you were always meant to be.”
I stared at her, trembling.
“I don’t know what that is.”
“You will.”
Her hand rested over my heart.
“And you will not face it alone.”
My breath shook. “So… what. Do I call you mom now… I mean that is to say.!” I threw my hand up trying to forget what I’d just uttered.
“If that is what you wish.” Her non expression gave off a warmth that spoke volumes.
When she spoke again it was with urgency. Her gaze going distant to something I could not see.
“ I don’t have much time. You must listen closely. What you need to do now, is become stronger. Before the shift happens. There are those who would see you chained. You must be wary they will be hunting for you, more now that I’ve claimed you.
“Hunting?” The panic in my voice riding.
Yes. And I will not be able to assist you from here on. I am being kept busy with holding reality together as the convergence draws near …. It takes most of my concentration. All I can do is encourage you with words.”
She started to fade into light.
“Wait… Hestia!! M-.”
“Keep your friend close my child. They are your sword and shield. Rely on that daughter…
Her form faded completely leaving that last bit like a whisper in the wind.
I was alone again. And I had more questions than answers.
The walk to Hilguard felt unreal. Dazedly I walked not really paying attention to my surroundings.
The trees blurred. The path blurred. My thoughts blurred, and Hestia’s words echoed in my skull like a heartbeat I couldn’t shut off.
I had died, in the literal sense. She had gave me her essence in order to keep me alive, and in doing so made me her daughter. Well I leave that for future me to unpack…
The devs had done something causing the worlds to start to converge. Then there was the immediate danger. I was being hunted it seemed. By the so called devs.
By the time the village gates came into view, my legs felt numb. I leaned against the wooden post, trying to steady my breathing, but it came out shallow and uneven. I needed to find Charlie and Riley. They needed to know, Lucas and nate as well. This involved them too.
I didn’t know how long I stood there. Trying not to have a panic attack…
Long enough for the world to feel too quiet.
Then..,
I’d noticed too late. The pain lanced across my ribs.
A single step slower and that strike would’ve ended me.
A voice drifted from the path ahead, calm and almost amused.
“Well, look at what we have here… I must say, little mouse, you are perceptive. That sneak attack would kill most people.”
I forced myself upright, hand pressed to my side.
A man stood in the center of the road, posture relaxed, expression composed. His gear was dark, fitted, unmistakably assassin‑class.
His eyes locked onto me with unsettling focus.
“You seem troubled, little miss mouse.”
I glanced at his name tag.
“Avongrid. “ A red skull hovered beside it.
A player killer…Great.
“Who the hell are you?” I hissed. “I not in the mood right now. Buzz off.”
He stepped closer, slow and deliberate, like he had all the time in the world.
“Oh dear… but I’ve only just arrived.”
His tone dripped with mock sympathy.
“Everyone’s been looking for you, little miss mouse.”
My stomach tightened.
“Are you one of the devs?” I demanded. “Why are you looking for me?”
My sword slid free, frost hissing along the blade.
His smile sharpened.
“Devs? No, no, my dear.”
He tilted his head.
“Just a fan… wanting to PLAY!!”
He moved.
Fast.
A blur of motion, a flash of steel.
I twisted sideways, barely avoiding the strike that would’ve separated my head. The blade sliced the air where my neck had been a heartbeat earlier.
I hit the ground in a roll, came up on one knee, sword raised.
Avongrid didn’t pause. He was already on me again.
I blocked the next strike, the impact jarring my arm. Frost burst from my blade, scattering across the ground in a thin sheet, and creeping onto to his blade.
He stepped through it like it wasn’t even there.
He lunged.
I parried, sparks of frost scattering. My ribs screamed in protest, but I forced myself to move, to breathe, to think.
He was stronger, and faster. Much more experienced.
But I wasn’t helpless.
I pushed off the ground, sliding back to gain distance. My breath came sharp and uneven.
He twirled his blade once, casual, almost elegant.
“You’re quicker than they said,” he murmured. “Good. My mistress enjoys a challenge.”
I tightened my grip on my sword. “Your mistress… she’s a player.”
Avongrid tilted his head. “Of course. and a remarkable one at that.”
“What does she want with me?”
His smile sharpened.
“You shine,” he said. “She saw the world notification, and sent me to probe you.”
My stomach twisted.
He lunged again.
I blocked, frost bursting from my blade, but I held my ground.
Avongrid stepped back, eyes bright with interest.
“So… “ I smirked “you’re just a pawn.”
His eyes narrowed, pissed. Until his attention was drawn by sound of running behind me.
Charlie and Riley burst onto the path, weapons drawn, breath sharp with panic.
“Kris!” Charlie shouted. “Get back!”
Riley moved to flank me, daggers ready. “Who is he?!”
Avongrid didn’t give them
More than a glance. His eyes stayed locked on me.
“My mistress wants you alive,” he said, his tone sharp and angry. “But she did not specify how comfortable you had to be when I deliver you.”
Charlie stepped between us, ready for a fight. “You’re not taking him.”
His eyes went speculative at her use of,“him.”
Riley’s voice was low, daggers steady. “Try it.”
Avongrid sighed, almost disappointed.
“Three against one. How tedious.”
He tapped two fingers to his temple in a mocking salute.
“Until next time, little mouse.”
“CALL ME MOUSE AGAIN TOU JERK….” My sword frosting over in anger.
A swirl of shadow wrapped around him as he smiled at me.
He vanished, and the forest fell silent.
Charlie turned to me immediately. “Kris—are you hurt?”
Riley grabbed my arm, voice trembling. “Who was that? What mistress? What does she want?”
I swallowed hard.
“She’s a player,” I whispered. “A dangerous one it seems . She sent that jerk to test me, or something.
Charlie’s eyes widened. “So he’s a pawn.”
I laughed “That’s what I said to him.”
“It seems sisters think alike” she grinned
I nodded. “Yea seems like- wait hey…well never mind.” being a sister is not as bad as what I was called a bit ago
Charlie’s looked at me wondering if I was gonna complain. I didn’t.
I looked at the place where Avongrid vanished.
“Ok… regardless. What the heck happened . Where did you go we were freaking out.” Charlie’s voice tightened.
We sat on a fallen log just outside Hilguard, the forest quiet except for the wind brushing through the leaves. I told them everything…well, almost everything.
Charlie and Riley didn’t need to know that I had died for real. That part stayed locked behind my ribs, deep where the panic couldn’t reach it.
Charlie started pacing almost immediately, boots kicking up a dust cloud, her voice rising with every sentence.
“So let me get this straight,” she said, gesturing wildly. “ The devs dragged you into some void to interrogate you, tried to track you down IRL, failed, then Hestia swoops in, saves you, tells you the worlds are merging, everyone in DOL is changing, and now you’re being hunted?”
She spun around, eyes wide, hair catching the sunlight.
“Oh, and let’s not forget the part where she gave you her essence, making you her daughter in the process! Did I get that right, or is there some other cosmic nightmare you forgot to mention?”
Riley sat beside me, silent, her hands clasped tight around her knees.
I could feel her eyes on me, steady, worried, searching for something that made sense.
I tried to speak, but Charlie cut me off again, pacing faster now.
“This is insane, Kris! You’re telling me you’re basically half‑divine now? That the game is real, and the devs are messing up reality? What does that even mean for us?”
Her voice cracked slightly at the end, frustration bleeding into fear.
I looked down at my hands, the faint shimmer of frost still clinging to my skin, and forced my voice steady.
“It means,” I said quietly, “we don’t have much time. We need to get stronger.”
Charlie stopped pacing.
Riley’s breath caught.
The forest felt smaller suddenly, the air heavier.
And for a moment, none of us spoke.
“Well… at least we’ll be elves… long life spans, and all that… “ My voice trailed off at her pout.
The she mumbled. “ I want a mom to, since we’re sisters, she could be both of our moms. I wouldn’t mind.
I sighed exasperation. “Not really th point of all that sis.”
Charlie and Riley stood close on either side of me, still shaken from everything I’d told them. Their hands hovered near me like they were afraid I’d vanish again.
I opened my mouth to say something…
But the world cut me off.
A low, vibrating hum rolled through the air.
The ground trembled beneath our feet.
The sky flickered at the edges like a corrupted file.
Riley stiffened. “Kris…?”
Then it happened.
“SSSNNAAAP…”
A line of white light tore open in front of us a wound in reality. The air around it warped, bending like heat over asphalt.
The tear widened.
And everything Hestia had been saying, was painfully clear. It couldn’t be mistakes any other way.
It showed the real world.
It was a hallway, and white tile floors. Fluorescent lights buzzing overhead. A row of doors with small windows. A cart with medical supplies pushed against the wall.
Charlie’s breath caught. “That’s… that’s not the game.”
Riley whispered, “That’s real. That’s the real world!!!”
My heart hammered in my chest.
Then a figure walked into view.
A man in his Mid‑30s wearing Scrubs.
A hospital badge clipped to his chest.
He froze mid‑step.
His eyes as big as dinner plates. He looked directly at us. Not through us. Not past us.
At us.
At me.
His face drained of color. His mouth falling open. The cart beside him rattled as his hand slipped off it. He took a step closer, disbelief etched across his face.
“What… the hell…” he mouthed.
Charlie grabbed my arm, her voice barely a whisper. “Kris… he can see us.”
The man reached out a hand toward the tear, toward me fingers trembling.
“Kris,” Riley whispered, “we need to move.”
But I couldn’t.
I was rooted to the spot, staring at a human being from the real world staring back at me in the game, like I was a ghost.
The man’s hand came closer, inches from the seam. “Don’t I whispered.”
He looked at me then, and I stared back our eyes locked.
And then the tear snapped shut with a violent crack, the sound echoing through the trees like a gunshot.
Silence.
The forest stilled.
The air settled.
The world returned to normal.
But nothing felt normal, it hadn’t for a while now.
Charlie turned to me, her voice shaking. “Kris… that wasn’t just a seam. That was hole.”
Riley swallowed hard. “And someone on the other side saw us.”
My chest tightened painfully. Hestia’s words echoed in my mind. You are being hunted. The worlds are drawing closer.
The seams will show.
Charlie stepped in front of me, her expression hardening with a fierce, protective resolve I’d never seen in her before.
“We can’t do this alone,” she said. “Not anymore.”
Riley nodded. “We need Nate and Lucas. They need to know. They need to be here.”
I looked at the place where the seam had been. Where a man from the real world had reached toward me like I was something impossible.
My voice came out quiet, but steady.
“Okay. Let’s get them.”
Charlie exhaled shakily. “We’ll tell them everything.”
Riley stepped closer. “All of it?”
Charlie nodded
And for the first time since Hestia appeared… since the devs dragged me into the void…since learning I had died…
I felt the weight of what was coming, And I knew we couldn’t face it alone.
