Prologue — When the World Was Woven

Reaper’s Oath

Before there were kingdoms.

Before there were stars reflected in quiet lakes.

Before names, crowns, or wars...

There were only two.

One wove beginnings.

The other carried endings.

Together, they walked an empty world.

She sat beneath a tree that had no roots.

Its silver branches stretched into endless darkness, each leaf glowing softly like a newborn star.

With patient hands, she drew countless shimmering Threads from her fingertips.

Every strand sang a different note.

Some bright with laughter.

Some quiet with sorrow.

Some fierce enough to shake mountains.

She smiled as she worked.

"They're all different."

"They should be," the hooded figure beside her replied.

His voice was gentle, carrying the warmth of a winter fire.

"If every journey were the same..."

"...none of them would matter."

She laughed.

"You always say that."

"And you always prove me right."

He reached out, carefully taking one glowing Thread between gloved fingers.

Within it flickered a child's first steps.

An old man's final smile.

Friends reuniting after years apart.

A promise whispered beneath falling snow.

"So fragile," he murmured.

"So beautiful," she answered.

Together they wove the first soul.

Then another.

Then thousands more.

The empty world slowly filled with forests, rivers, oceans, and skies.

Life breathed.

Death watched.

Neither ruled the other.

One offered every beginning.

The other ensured no ending was faced alone.

Time passed.

How long?

Neither could say.

The world had begun measuring itself.

Seasons came.

Leaves fell.

Children were born.

The first tears were shed.

The first farewells spoken.

Each time a soul reached the end of its journey, the hooded figure greeted it with the same quiet smile.

"No soul walks alone."

He carried each one home.

Then...

Something impossible happened.

A Thread unraveled.

She froze.

It did not return to her loom.

It simply...

ceased.

Not broken.

Not cut.

Gone.

Silence spread across the endless tree.

Another Thread dissolved.

Then another.

The music of creation faltered.

Far beyond the light...

darkness stirred.

Not shadow.

Not night.

Absence.

A hunger that wished not to conquer—

but to erase.

The stars dimmed wherever it drifted.

Mountains crumbled into dust before it ever touched them.

Names vanished from memory.

Songs forgot their own melodies.

"What is it?" she whispered.

He looked toward the horizon for a long time before answering.

"I do not know."

It was the first time he had ever spoken those words.

The hunger reached the roots of the great tree.

Where it passed...

Threads came apart.

Lives never began.

Memories disappeared.

History itself began to unravel.

She clutched the Loom with trembling hands.

"If it reaches the heart..."

He nodded.

"I know."

"There will be no more beginnings."

"There will be no more endings."

"There will simply be..."

Nothing.

For the first time since the world had been woven...

Life wept.

"I can weave new souls."

"But I cannot weave them from nothing."

He stepped closer.

Carefully.

Tenderly.

As though afraid she might break.

"You once asked me why endings exist."

She lowered her head.

"I remember."

"They exist..."

"...because every story deserves to be carried."

He placed one hand over hers.

"I made you a promise."

"You did."

"No soul would ever walk alone."

The darkness surged.

The roots began to crack.

The Loom trembled.

She turned toward him.

"If you stand before it..."

"You'll disappear."

He smiled.

Not bravely.

Not fearlessly.

Simply with quiet certainty.

"If the journey of one can protect the journeys of all..."

"...then it is a journey worth taking."

She held his hand tighter.

"I don't want to lose you."

"You won't."

His fingers slowly slipped from hers.

"So long as someone remembers."

He reached into his own chest.

Light and shadow gathered around his hand.

From his heart emerged countless black Threads.

Not corrupted.

Not evil.

Simply the color of endings.

One by one...

they broke away.

Each became something different.

A blade.

A crest.

Ancient seals buried beneath the earth.

Silent guardians hidden across the world.

Fragments of a promise.

His form grew fainter with every Thread he surrendered.

His voice became distant.

"If I remain whole..."

"...the Abyss will consume us both."

"So I'll become..."

"...the gate."

She reached for him.

Her fingers closed around empty air.

"No!"

The world shook.

The sky shattered into rivers of light.

The first Heartroot sank deep beneath the earth.

The black Threads scattered across creation.

The hooded figure was gone.

Only his final words lingered.

"Remember me."

She stood alone.

The Loom still trembled.

The darkness pressed ever closer.

Slowly...

she laid both hands upon the silver roots.

Her body dissolved into countless radiant Threads.

They flowed into the tree.

Into every root.

Every branch.

Every soul yet to be born.

The Loom blazed brighter than a thousand suns.

Its roots spread beneath the entire world.

She closed her eyes.

And waited.

Ages passed.

Kingdoms rose.

Kingdoms fell.

The old language faded.

The true names of Life and Death were forgotten.

Stories became legends.

Legends became fairy tales.

People came to fear the one who carried endings...

...and forgot the one who had once promised that no soul would walk alone.

Yet beneath the oldest forest...

Far below forgotten kingdoms...

Beyond ruined temples and rivers that had never seen the sun...

A single black Thread stirred.

A voice, worn thin by millennia, spoke into the darkness.

"...At last."

Silence answered.

Then, softer still—

"...Candidate."

The Thread waited.

And somewhere above, beneath an ordinary sky, a seventeen-year-old boy dreamed of revenge, unaware that the oldest promise in existence had begun to awaken.
