Chapter 11 — The Man Who Saw More

Reaper’s Oath

Kael barely slept.

Every time he closed his eyes, he saw the black Thread.

The monster's scream echoed through his mind.

The silver strands connecting the city.

The impossible emptiness where the creature's Threads should have been.

And above all else—

Master Arlen's expression.

Recognition.

Not surprise.

Not confusion.

Recognition.

As though he had been waiting for this.

Waiting for him.

The orphanage bell rang before sunrise.

Kael was already awake.

He sat on the edge of his bed, staring at the silver pendant in his palm.

The symbol seemed different now.

Not because it had changed.

Because he had.

For years it had been a meaningless shape.

A relic from a village that no longer existed.

Now he knew better.

The same symbol had appeared beneath the forgotten shrine.

The same symbol had reacted to the black Thread.

The same symbol had caused a stone statue to move.

Whatever it was...

It wasn't ordinary.

Neither was he.

That realization was somehow more frightening.

"You look terrible."

Kael glanced up.

Finn stood in the doorway.

Somehow the blond teenager looked even worse.

Dark circles hung beneath his eyes.

His hair pointed in six different directions.

He was carrying three journals.

Again.

"You didn't sleep."

Finn looked offended.

"I was researching."

"You were awake all night."

"I was researching all night."

"That's not better."

"It is if I find something."

"Did you?"

Finn's grin appeared immediately.

Kael groaned.

If you discover this narrative on Amazon, be aware that it has been stolen. Please report the violation.

That answer was yes.

The two boys walked through the quiet morning streets together.

Most of Havenfall still slept.

Only bakers, merchants, and city guards moved through the dim light.

For once...

Finn wasn't talking.

That worried Kael.

Finally, the blond teenager spoke.

"My parents mentioned a symbol."

Kael immediately looked over.

"What?"

Finn pulled a worn journal from beneath his arm.

"My mother's expedition notes."

He opened to a bookmarked page.

The handwriting was neat.

Careful.

Almost elegant.

"Found another fragment beneath the western roots."

"Same circular symbol as before."

"Locals refuse to discuss it."

"Claim it belongs to the Keepers."

"Not enough evidence to verify."

Kael frowned.

"The Keepers?"

Finn nodded.

"That's all she wrote."

"Nothing else?"

"The next six pages are missing."

Kael sighed.

Of course they were.

Every answer seemed to lead to three new questions.

The Royal Academy stood atop the highest hill in Havenfall.

Kael had seen it his entire life.

But seeing it up close felt different.

The stone walls rose above the city like a fortress.

Silver banners fluttered in the morning breeze.

Training grounds stretched across the eastern side of the campus.

Students in blue uniforms crossed the courtyards.

Some laughed.

Some trained.

Some carried enough books to collapse under the weight.

Finn stared.

"I want to live here."

"You want to live in every library you enter."

"Correct."

At the front gate stood Master Arlen.

Alone.

Waiting.

As though he had known the exact moment Kael would arrive.

The old instructor looked toward Finn.

Then toward Kael.

Then sighed.

"Only one of you was invited."

Finn immediately raised both hands.

"I know when I'm unwanted."

Arlen's eyebrow twitched.

"I'll wait outside."

Finn stepped away.

Then paused.

Then returned.

Then whispered:

"If he starts teaching secret ancient magic..."

Kael groaned.

"Take notes."

Finn nodded seriously.

Then left.

The academy gates closed behind Kael.

For the first time...

He found himself alone with Master Arlen.

The old instructor led him through silent hallways.

Past classrooms.

Past training chambers.

Past students who immediately stepped aside upon seeing him.

Eventually they reached a small stone courtyard hidden deep within the academy grounds.

No training dummies.

No weapons.

No decorations.

Just a single tree.

And a stone bench.

Arlen sat.

Gesturing for Kael to do the same.

The silence stretched.

Then—

"You saw Threads before the monster arrived."

Not a question.

A statement.

Kael nodded slowly.

"Twice."

The old man seemed unsurprised.

"When?"

Kael told him.

The bridge.

The shrine.

The black Thread.

The voice.

The vision.

The pendant.

Everything.

Almost everything.

He left out only one detail.

The word.

Candidate.

Somehow...

That felt dangerous.

Arlen listened without interruption.

Without disbelief.

Without surprise.

When Kael finished...

The old instructor remained silent for a long time.

Finally he asked:

"Tell me."

"What do you know about Soul Threads?"

Kael blinked.

The question seemed almost ridiculous.

"They're... power."

Arlen smiled sadly.

"That is what the Kingdom teaches."

"And they're wrong?"

"Not wrong."

The old man looked toward the distant Black Forest.

"Merely incomplete."

The same word again.

Incomplete.

Garrick had used it.

The demonstration speech had implied it.

Now Arlen repeated it.

"What are Soul Threads really?"

Kael asked quietly.

The old instructor looked toward the ancient tree above them.

Sunlight filtered through the leaves.

Dancing across the stone.

For a moment...

He seemed very old.

Older than his years.

Older than the academy.

Older than Havenfall itself.

Then he spoke.

"Imagine a tapestry."

Kael frowned.

"A tapestry?"

Arlen nodded.

"Millions of Threads."

"Each connected."

"Each supporting countless others."

He drew a line through the air.

"A single strand appears insignificant."

"But remove enough..."

The line broke.

"And eventually the entire weave collapses."

Kael listened carefully.

Something about the explanation felt important.

More important than numbers.

More important than rankings.

"Soul Threads are not simply power."

Arlen continued.

"They are pieces of something larger."

"Something ancient."

"Something most of the world has forgotten."

The pendant beneath Kael's shirt suddenly felt warm.

Arlen's eyes narrowed.

He had noticed.

Before either could speak—

The ground trembled.

A faint vibration.

Barely noticeable.

Yet both felt it.

The old instructor immediately stood.

His calm expression vanished.

"Impossible."

Another tremor followed.

Stronger.

Closer.

Then—

A bell rang.

Not from Havenfall.

Not from the academy.

From the Black Forest.

A deep sound.

Ancient.

Powerful.

A sound that had not echoed across the world for thousands of years.

Far beneath the roots...

In the forgotten city...

The cracked black obelisk shattered.

Ancient black Threads exploded through ruined streets.

The sleeping presence rose.

Fully awake.

For the first time since the Age of Legends.

And a voice echoed through the darkness.

One that carried across roots.

Across stone.

Across forgotten kingdoms.

Across time itself.

"Find the Candidate."

Kael felt the words inside his soul.

And for the first time since Ashvale burned...

True fear entered his heart.

Because deep down...

He knew the voice was speaking about him
