The Crossing did not creak.

It did not sway.

Despite stretching across a chasm so deep that no torchlight could reach the bottom, the bridge felt impossibly solid beneath their feet.

Kael walked near the front beside Sera and Master Arlen.

Finn and Lyra followed a few steps behind, their voices unusually quiet.

Even Finn wasn't writing.

That alone told Kael how overwhelming the place felt.

Silver light drifted beneath the woven roots.

Not magic.

Not lanterns.

The Threads themselves.

Millions of faint strands flowed through the bridge like glowing veins.

Every few seconds one pulsed softly.

As if the bridge possessed a heartbeat.

Kael reached toward one.

His fingers stopped just short.

For reasons he couldn't explain...

It felt wrong to touch it.

Like interrupting someone else's conversation.

"You can."

Sera said.

Without looking back.

Kael blinked.

"What?"

"The Threads."

She smiled faintly.

"They won't hurt you."

"You've touched them?"

"No."

"...Then how do you know?"

Sera glanced over her shoulder.

"Because they're reaching toward you."

Kael looked again.

She was right.

Tiny silver Threads drifted lazily through the air.

Yet every one that floated close gently curved toward him.

Not wrapping around him.

Simply...

Acknowledging him.

Master Arlen noticed.

His expression remained unreadable.

But Kael saw him quietly commit the sight to memory.

Behind them—

Finn finally spoke.

Very quietly.

"...Does anyone else feel like we're inside something alive?"

Nobody answered immediately.

Because everyone felt it.

The walls weren't carved stone.

They breathed.

Almost imperceptibly.

Roots slowly expanded.

Contracted.

Expanded again.

Like lungs.

Lyra ran her fingers gently along one enormous root.

Her eyes widened.

"It isn't wood."

Sera nodded.

"No."

"What is it?"

"The Heartroot."

Kael looked toward the massive root stretching overhead.

It was wider than Havenfall's largest tower.

Silver veins shimmered beneath its bark.

"All of this..."

Sera rested a hand against it.

"...grew from a single root."

Finn stared.

"That's impossible."

"It should be."

Another pulse spread through the root.

Silver light flowed past them like water.

Kael suddenly felt dizzy.

His vision blurred.

The bridge disappeared.

The Underforest vanished.

He stood beneath an endless sky of stars.

A silver tree reached into eternity.

Its roots floated through darkness.

Not buried.

Suspended.

Every root carried countless glowing Threads.

Some brilliant.

Some faint.

Some slowly fading.

A woman sat beneath the tree.

Silver hair.

Gentle eyes.

Patient hands.

She smiled as she wove another Thread.

Nearby...

A hooded man watched.

Not speaking.

Simply smiling.

Warmly.

The woman laughed.

"They're all different."

The hooded figure answered softly.

"They should be."

"If every journey were the same..."

"...none of them would matter."

Kael felt tears welling before he understood why.

The memory wasn't his.

Yet...

It hurt.

Deeply.

The silver-haired woman suddenly stopped weaving.

She looked directly at him.

Not through him.

At him.

Her smile became impossibly gentle.

"Little one."

The words carried infinite kindness.

"You're finally here."

The vision shattered.

Kael stumbled.

His knees hit the bridge.

"Kael!"

Lyra rushed forward.

Finn nearly dropped three journals trying to catch him.

"I'm alright."

It wasn't entirely true.

His heart raced.

His breathing came in short bursts.

Sera knelt beside him.

"What did you see?"

Kael hesitated.

"A woman."

Master Arlen immediately looked up.

"What did she look like?"

Kael described her.

Silver hair.

Kind eyes.

Patient smile.

The endless tree.

The floating roots.

Silence followed.

Long silence.

Then—

Sera slowly stood.

"That's impossible."

Finn frowned.

"People keep saying that."

"They're usually wrong."

Sera ignored him.

"No one has seen her."

"Who?"

Kael asked.

The scout swallowed.

"The First Weaver."

Even Arlen looked unsettled.

"The oldest stories say she vanished before history began."

Lyra looked thoughtful.

"Not vanished."

Everyone turned toward her.

She frowned.

"In the carvings."

"The people weren't worshipping."

"They were remembering."

Master Arlen's eyes widened.

"Go on."

Lyra slowly pieced the thought together.

"If those carvings preserve memories..."

"And Kael touched the Heartroot..."

Her voice became quieter.

"...what if the Heartroot remembers too?"

Nobody spoke.

Because suddenly...

Everything fit.

Threads preserved memories.

The carvings preserved memories.

The Heartroot carried Threads.

Could it also carry...

The memories of those who created it?

Finn slowly whispered:

"The entire forest..."

"...is remembering."

Before anyone could answer—

A horn echoed through the cavern.

Long.

Deep.

Ancient.

Sera immediately looked toward the far end of the bridge.

"They're here."

Across the Crossing...

Dozens of figures emerged from the silver mist.

Rootwatch Rangers.

Each wore armor woven from bark, leather, and polished stone.

Silver Threads shimmered across every cloak.

They moved with disciplined precision.

Not one wasted motion.

At their head walked an elderly woman.

Smaller than Kael expected.

Leaning lightly on a staff carved from living wood.

Silver hair reached her waist.

Kind amber eyes studied the travelers.

She smiled the moment she saw Kael.

"Elder Mira."

Sera bowed deeply.

Every ranger followed.

Master Arlen lowered his head respectfully.

Kael hesitated.

Then bowed as well.

When he looked up...

Mira was standing directly before him.

She shouldn't have crossed the distance that quickly.

Yet somehow...

She had.

Her weathered hand gently rested against his cheek.

For a long moment...

She simply looked at him.

Tears filled her eyes.

"So many centuries..."

she whispered.

"I feared I would never live to see this day."

Kael didn't know what to say.

The Elder smiled through her tears.

Then she spoke words that made everyone present fall silent.

"Welcome home..."

"...Child of the Promise."
