In the empty hospital corridor, Lu Muqian was the only one waiting outside the operating room. In the silent environment, he stared at the glowing red light above the door, his hands tightly clasped and pressed against his forehead.
It seemed like a prayer, even though he knew she would successfully come out of there, a lingering trace of fear still haunted him.
Last night, the young girl had asked him if the surgery would hurt. He wanted to say he wasn’t sure, he didn’t know, but such words would only make her more uneasy.
Suddenly, the light above the doorframe went out. Lu Muqian immediately stood up from his seat and waited quietly for the door to open from the inside.
In an instant, the door swung open, and Ran Yu was the first to appear. “Brother Muqian, Little Sister-in-law’s surgery was very successful. Don’t worry. With proper rest, there’s no chance of recurrence in her lifetime.”
“Mm, I understand.”
After An Yin was wheeled out, Lu Muqian followed closely without leaving her side.
In the hospital room, Lu Muqian gazed at An Yin’s pale, bloodless face, tightly holding her hand that wasn’t connected to an IV, and brought it to his lips for a kiss.
For no apparent reason, Lu Muqian felt terrified. Even though An Yin was already fine, even though Ran Yu had said the surgery was successful, why was his heart trembling with fear?
This scene made him feel deeply insecure, as if something was slipping through his fingers—he felt he was about to lose her.
By evening, An Yin finally woke up. Before she could fully open her eyes, Lu Muqian had already noticed and leaned over, supporting himself above her head.
“Yinyin….”
An Yin saw the deep worry in the man’s eyes. She thought that while she was in surgery, he must have been terribly afraid waiting outside.
So her first response was to give Lu Muqian a soft, reassuring smile, letting him know she was fine and he needn’t worry.
“I want some water.”
Lu Muqian picked up the warm water he had prepared nearby. Unsure of exactly when An Yin would wake up, he had made sure the water stayed warm at all times.
Thoughtfully, he placed a straw in the cup and let her sip from it.
“Does Yinyin have a headache? Is there anywhere you feel uncomfortable? Are you hungry? Hmm?”
After she finished drinking, Lu Muqian fired off a series of questions, to which An Yin responded by shaking her head with a smile.
In truth, aside from a little fear when she first went in, she had fallen completely asleep after the anesthesia and hadn’t felt anything else.
“Lu Muqian, the anesthesia probably hasn’t worn off completely yet. I want to sleep a bit more. Why don’t you go rest too?” An Yin’s voice was soft and weak, making Lu Muqian’s heart melt entirely.
“Just sleep, Baby. I’ll stay right here and watch over you.”
An Yin’s eyelids were too heavy to keep open. She was still very drowsy, her energy not fully restored, and since it was still late at night, she only wanted to sleep a little longer. Meanwhile, Lu Muqian stubbornly insisted on staying by her side.
The next day…
An Yin woke up before 8 a.m. As soon as she opened her eyes, she saw him sitting by her bed, his eyes closed as he rested.
She reached out and tugged at the corner of his clothes, startling him awake immediately.
An Yin wanted to sit up, so Lu Muqian placed a pillow behind her lower back to make her more comfortable.
The lighting had been dim the previous night, but now, up close, An Yin noticed that Lu Muqian looked a bit disheveled…
Dark circles under his eyes, stubble on his chin, and strands of hair falling over his forehead, slightly covering his smooth brow.
An Yin’s heart ached for the man. She had rarely seen him in such a state before. Even in her past life, she had only caught glimpses of him like this occasionally during the period when she was treating him.
An Yin cupped his face in her hands. “Lu Muqian, didn’t I remind you yesterday to get proper rest too? Have you been disobedient and not listened to me?”
“Yinyin, I…”
Feigning anger, An Yin said, “Right now, go clean yourself up first before coming back to take care of me.”
“I’m sorry, Yinyin. I scared you. Please don’t be angry. I’ll go right away.”
There was a private bathroom in the hospital room. Lu Muqian grabbed a set of fresh clothes and went in to wash up. When he saw his haggard reflection in the mirror, he startled even himself.
So ugly. No wonder Yinyin was angry. He must have frightened her.
Lu Muqian was typically a cold, aloof CEO who paid great attention to his appearance. It was only because he had been so intensely worried about An Yin over the past two days that he had neglected his own condition.
The man took a shower, washing away his fatigue, brushed his teeth, washed his face, and shaved the stubble from his chin. After checking his reflection again to confirm he looked completely different from when he had entered, he finally felt reassured enough to step out.
An Yin had been playing on her phone while keeping an eye out for when Lu Muqian would emerge.
So the moment he walked out, An Yin spotted him immediately.
“Lu Muqian, come here.”
The man walked over. He wanted to explain something to An Yin, but there was really nothing to justify. “Yinyin, I…”
An Yin leaned closer, enjoying holding Lu Muqian’s face. “See? This is much better. I told you to go to sleep last night, but you didn’t listen. You ended up making yourself look so disheveled. Don’t you know how to take care of yourself too?”
“If Yinyin doesn’t like it, I won’t do it again next time. Please don’t be angry.”
“Sigh~ Lu Muqian, I’m not angry. I feel sorry for you. I’m upset that you only worry about me and take care of me while neglecting yourself.”
She was starting to wonder if asking Lu Muqian to accompany her had been the wrong decision. He was clearly more worried about her than even her family.
“If I had known, I wouldn’t have asked you to come with me. I should have called my brother instead.”
Hearing that she didn’t want him, Lu Muqian panicked. “No, you have to call me. I’m your husband.”
“Oh, so you know you’re my husband? Then why don’t you listen to what I say?”
“I’ll listen next time.”
“After the doctor finishes rounds later, why don’t you lie down on my bed and rest for a while?”
The “next time” came rather quickly, didn’t it?
“Okay, I’ll listen to Yinyin.” Lu Muqian truly hadn’t rested properly these past two days, torn between worrying about An Yin and handling the important documents Qiao Yi had been sending to the hospital.
