A long spear cloaked in a wind-elemental magic aura pierced through the curtain of rain at a terrifying speed. The razor-sharp tip was only inches away from Lloyd’s back!
Viscount Morgan’s Gale Cavalry utilized magic horseshoes to push their mounts well past the speed limit of ordinary beasts. They adopted a wing-shaped formation, flanking from both the left and right to seal off every possible escape route amidst the pitch-black darkness and the torrential downpour.
"System... activate [Micro-Management] !"
Lloyd Weston roared the command in his mind through gritted teeth, trading off the very last limits of his physical endurance.
Ding!
[Mana Deducted: 10 units]
[Remaining Mana: 0/100 - Emergency Warning: Mana Depleted! Body entering critical overload state!]
Invisible blue threads shot out from Lloyd’s body, instantly connecting to the neural pathways of Frank, Elisa, and Sylvie. But the backlash was agonizingly severe. Bright red blood gushed from the young Baron’s nose. His vision blurred as if clouded by a dark mist, and a searing pain shot from the nape of his neck straight down his spine like a bolt of lightning.
"Ugh..." Lloyd groaned in his throat, biting his lip until it bled to forcefully maintain his consciousness.
"Frank! Ditch the horse! Build a wall and block the right pass!" Lloyd transmitted the commands through his consciousness at lightning speed. "Elisa! Horizontal sword wave, intercept the center charge! Sylvie, guide us into the dense forest at nine o'clock, now!"
The combat instincts of his top-tier units responded flawlessly under the system's control!
"Haaah!"
Frank threw himself off his horse while it was still galloping at top speed. The giant youth rolled through the mud, immediately stomping his feet into the ground to block the narrow pathway on the right. His [Iron Fortress SSR] talent was pushed to its absolute maximum. A brilliant golden light erupted into a colossal shield, slamming head-on into three Gale Cavalrymen trying to cut them off!
CRASH!!!
The armored warhorses collided with the wall of light, losing their footing and tumbling over. The guards were sent flying, crashing violently against the massive tree trunks!
In that exact same second, Elisa Blackwood spun her horse around. The female Magic Knight hoisted her black greatsword high. Deep purple mana exploded around the blade, slicing through the pouring rain.
"Lunar Shadow Sword Dance!"
Elisa swung her sword horizontally. A wave of dark purple energy swept outward like a gigantic blade, cleanly severing the wind auras of the vanguard cavalry! Even if it didn't completely shred their iron armor, the sheer concussive force was more than enough to shatter the enemy's wing formation. Several warhorses panicked, rearing up and completely breaking their ranks.
"This way! Follow me!"
Sylvie shouted. The elf girl wasn't riding a horse; instead, she nimbly leaped from branch to branch across the massive trees, guiding everyone in a sharp left turn into the 'Bramble Woods'—a dense section of the forest where the trees grew so closely together that horses couldn't build up speed.
Lloyd yanked his reins, spurring his horse to follow Sylvie's shadow into the dark canopy, with Elisa and Frank closely guarding the rear.
"You absolute trash! Follow them!"
The Gale Cavalry commander roared in fury. He tried to spur his horse into the brambles, but the extreme speed granted by their magic horseshoes became a fatal flaw in the tight, root-infested terrain. Several warhorses tripped over thick roots and tumbled to the ground, while others were ensnared by thorny vines, completely immobilized.
"Kiting the creeps into the jungle to negate their speed advantage... that's just basic survival mechanics."
Lloyd managed a weak smirk, muttering a gamer quip under his breath. Seeing the red dots on his [Mini-Map] stall at the forest's edge, unable to pursue any further, he immediately canceled the [Micro-Management] connection.
Ding!
[Alert: Connection terminated... Body entering emergency recovery state]
The moment the system shut down, Lloyd’s vision went completely black for a split second. His body slumped to the side, nearly falling off the horse. But the demon slave girl in his arms reached out with her trembling, frail hands, tightly grabbing onto his cloak to keep him from falling.
"Pant... pant..." Lloyd gasped heavily, resting his face against the warhorse's mane to keep himself awake. Blood continued to drip from his nose, mixing with the cold rain.
Kyrene Darkeyes looked up at the human boy holding her so fiercely. Her amethyst eyes trembled violently. She could clearly see the sheer agony etched across his face... He wasn't faking it. He had truly put his life on the line to protect her from her pursuers.
"Why..." Kyrene whispered, her voice barely audible over the rain. "Why did you go to such lengths... I am just a demon... a slave despised by humans... Saving me will only get you hunted..."
For her entire life, humans had done nothing but exploit her blood and her power. No one had ever shed a single drop of sweat to protect her.
Lloyd forced his eyes open, meeting the girl's confused gaze. He raised a mud- and blood-stained hand, gently patting her silver hair.
"I might be a bit of a selfish noble..." Lloyd offered a faint smile, one so warm and genuine that it made Kyrene's numb heart skip a beat. "But I have one ironclad rule... I will never abandon 'my people' to rot in hell just because it's inconvenient."
The phrase 'my people' caused the tears Kyrene had just dried to fall once more. She buried her face into his chest, letting her sobs be swallowed by the sound of the rain.
A New Dawn
Lloyd's party spent over two grueling hours navigating the dense forest. Sylvie did a phenomenal job leading the way, flawlessly avoiding monster nests and poacher traps, while Frank and Elisa erased their tracks to prevent anyone from tailing them.
By the time dawn broke, golden light began to peek over the horizon. The rain had stopped, leaving behind only the earthy scent of wet soil and damp leaves.
"My Lord... we've arrived," Frank pointed ahead, his voice heavy with relief.
Past the treeline stood the 'Second City Wall' built from sharpened red pine logs, standing tall and sturdy. The magic observation tower at the corner of the wall still emitted a soft blue glow—a beacon of safety. This was the Verdant Territory. Their stronghold!
"Open the gates! Lord Lloyd has returned!"
The voice of Notch, the Orc builder, boomed from the watchtower. The massive wooden gates were quickly hauled open by the morning shift laborers.
The moment Lloyd’s horse crossed the threshold into the city, the immense tension he had carried all night finally shattered. Lloyd let out a long sigh of relief. Having pushed his body past its limits for far too long, he carefully lowered Kyrene to the ground before collapsing to his knees in the dirt, utterly exhausted.
"My Lord!" Frank rushed over, catching Lloyd before he hit the ground. "You're badly injured! Your nose won't stop bleeding!"
"I'm fine... just mana exhaustion. I'll be okay after some rest," Lloyd waved him off, gesturing toward the trembling demon girl standing nearby. "Take her to Elder Aura... She needs healing more than I do."

Kyrene clutched Lloyd's cloak tightly around her frail frame. She looked around the Verdant Territory with profound wariness.
The first things she saw were a giant Orc running down from a tower, an Elf girl chatting with a human knight, and a crowd of villagers rushing over in a panic.
The demon slave girl's mind flashed back to the hateful glares of the humans in Morgan's manor. They had looked at her like she was garbage—like a monster meant to be chained up. She braced herself to be cursed at or have rocks thrown at her by these villagers.
But... what happened was the exact opposite.
"Oh my heavens! What happened to this poor child? Look at her, she's half-frozen!"
Aunt Maria, Uncle Ben's wife, ran up with eyes full of pity. She didn't look at the demonic horns on Kyrene's forehead with disgust. Instead, she immediately took off her own woven sheep's wool shawl and draped it over the shivering girl.
"Hurry and get her to the fire in the town hall! I'll go heat up some beef stew!" Uncle Ben yelled to the other villagers. Everyone rushed to help, completely eager and without a single question about her race.
Kyrene stood frozen in place, her amethyst eyes wide with utter confusion.
"You... you don't despise me?" Kyrene whispered, her voice shaking. "I am... a demon."
"So what if you're a demon?" Sylvie walked up, cheerfully throwing an arm around the girl's shoulder. "I'm a rogue Elf, and Notch is an unguilded Orc. This territory is full of weirdos... As long as the Lord takes you in, you're our family."
Elisa nodded in agreement. "Evil isn't found in one's bloodline, but in one's actions. No one here is judged by how they were born."
Those words felt like warm sunlight piercing through the ice that had frozen Kyrene's heart for years.
"Make way, please... let me examine her."
A raspy but incredibly gentle voice called out. Tim pushed 'Elder Aura's' wheelchair through the crowd. The blind old woman slowly reached out, her wrinkled hands lightly brushing against Kyrene's face.
Kyrene flinched slightly, but Elder Aura's touch was overflowing with a warmth and mercy she had never known—like the touch of a mother she never had.
"Oh, you poor child..." Elder Aura closed her eyes, sensing the deep scars of torture on the girl's body and soul. "You have carried far too much pain... but you don't need to be afraid anymore."
The old woman gently pulled the frail, scarred body of the demon slave into a warm, unconditionally loving embrace.
"Welcome home... lost child of the Gods."
The words 'Welcome home', coupled with an embrace that asked for nothing in return, shattered Kyrene's final defenses.
The rigid strength she had forced upon herself to survive in the dungeons completely crumbled. The demon girl buried her face in Elder Aura's shoulder and began to bawl. Tears of relief, tears of joy, and tears of a new beginning flowed endlessly.
Lloyd sat in the mud watching the scene unfold, a faint smile gracing his pale face. Even though his body was so exhausted he could barely move, seeing this broken UR-tier unit regain her soul made every single risk he took completely worth it.
Recruiting the secret character into the party... another one down, Lloyd thought happily.
Ding!
[System Update: Unit 'Kyrene Darkeyes' successfully rescued]
[Loyalty Status: 75/100 (Blossoming Trust) ]
[Current Physical Status: Severe Exhaustion (Requires at least 7 days of recovery before activating UR talent) ]
The golden system text flashed in Lloyd's vision, confirming that tonight's life-and-death gamble had yielded the highest possible return.
"Scoring two UR-tier units in a single day... I guess I've completely burned through my lifetime supply of good luck," Lloyd muttered to himself with a faint smile, cracking another gamer joke to relieve the night's built-up tension.
Frank and Marcus rushed over to help Lloyd's swaying body back to his feet.
"My Lord, your bleeding has stopped, but your face is as pale as a boiled chicken!" Frank said with deep concern. "You need to rest right now. I'll have Aunt Maria brew you some restorative tonics."
"Thanks, Frank," Lloyd patted his guard's arm before turning to Marcus Grey, who was standing nearby, looking equally pale. "Sir Marcus... I apologize for deviating from the plan and dragging you into danger."
The middle-aged merchant quickly shook his head. Even though he was still terrified by what his Lord had just pulled off, his eyes shifted to a look of absolute resolve.
"Please do not say that, Lord Lloyd." Marcus let out a long breath. "When I saw the scars on that young demon girl's body, I knew immediately... if we had left her there, we would be no different from the beasts parading as nobles. Your decision was the right one, My Lord."
Lloyd nodded. "Get ready, Sir Marcus... In two days, the Imperial Inquisitor will arrive. We don't have time to catch our breath."
"And now, we have both a frenzied Viscount Morgan out for blood over his stolen slave, and Baron Reinhard waiting to sink his teeth into us..."
Elisa Blackwood walked over to join the conversation, having wiped her black greatsword completely clean of blood. "A true two-front war is about to begin. But as the commander of your forces, I will bet my life on this: Not a single bastard is going to step foot through these gates to harm our people!"
"I look forward to that day, Elisa," Lloyd smiled, invigorated by his former Magic Knight's fiery spirit.
The young Baron cast his gaze across the plaza... The towering second wall, the operational watchtower, the adventurers currently undergoing training, an SSR-tier giant guard, an SR-tier elf sniper, a UR-tier army commander, and a newly discovered demon girl harboring divine power...
Every piece on the chessboard was perfectly in place. The Verdant Territory was currently stronger than it had ever been in its entire history!
"We are ready... No matter what kind of storm blows our way, I'll face it head-on!" Lloyd clenched his fists, his chest swelling with overflowing confidence.
It was the feeling of a 'Winner' who had flawlessly cleared a Hell Mode quest. This victory felt sweeter and more perfect than he could have ever imagined.
However... in the board game of politics, filled with vicious men, a sweet victory is often just the bait hiding a razor-sharp hook.
Interlude: Viscount Morgan's Manor
Later that same night, inside a grand hall adorned with gold ornaments and crimson velvet carpets.
CRASH!!!
An exorbitantly expensive crystal wine glass was hurled violently against the stone wall! Deep red wine splattered, staining the oil portraits of the Morgan ancestors.
"You absolute piece of trash! You're completely useless!"
'Viscount Morgan,' an obese middle-aged noble whose face was pitted with smallpox scars, bellowed across the hall. His face was so red with fury he looked ready to explode. His chubby hands tightly gripped a leather whip, lashing it mercilessly across the back of the Gale Cavalry commander!
CRACK! CRACK!
"Fifty cavalrymen! Equipped with magic horseshoes that cost a fortune! And you let just four people break your lines and escape?!" Morgan stomped his feet furiously. "That demon slave was the only ingredient left to perfect my Elixir of Life! Do you have any idea what I’ve just lost?!"
The cavalry commander kneeling on the floor didn't even dare to cry out in pain. He pressed his forehead flush against the velvet carpet. "M-My Lord Viscount, please forgive me! But they weren't ordinary bandits! One of them was Elisa Blackwood, the former Magic Knight Commander! She used a sword wave to shatter my vanguard in a single strike!"
"Elisa Blackwood... That wanted rebel knight?" Morgan froze, his whip stopping mid-air.
Old man Albert, the alchemist whose body was wrapped in bandages from the golden energy backlash, limped closer to his master.
"My Lord..." Albert rasped, his voice dry. "I sent scouts to track their horse prints... The trail clearly shows they were heading southeast... straight into the borders of the 'Verdant Territory'!"
"The Verdant Territory?" Morgan scowled deeply. "That run-down patch of dirt owned by that boy Baron? The one rumored to have recently opened a free market and hired an Orc builder?"
"Yes, My Lord," Albert nodded, his eyes gleaming with malicious cunning and spite. "For a knight of that caliber to appear alongside people from the Verdant Territory... it cannot be a coincidence. Baron Lloyd Weston must have learned the secret of that demon slave's golden mana and intentionally raided us to steal her away!"
Morgan ground his teeth, his body trembling from a volatile mix of sheer greed and blinding rage.
"That insolent little brat... He dares to invade the manor of a Viscount?!" The twisted noble roared. "Does he think hiding behind some stupid wooden walls will save him from my wrath?!"
Morgan snapped his head toward his personal butler, who was shivering in the corner of the room. "Fetch my family's writing kit right now! I am writing an urgent formal complaint to Baron Reinhard! That old fool is already looking for an excuse to crush the Verdant Territory, isn't he? I will offer him my Gale Cavalry to help grind that boy into the dirt!"
The butler scrambled to place parchment and a quill on the desk. Morgan furiously scribbled his message, his strokes fast and violent.
But once the first letter was finished, the twisted noble pulled out a second sheet of parchment... This one was pitch-black, its edges adorned with complex, arcane magic runes.
Old Albert's eyes widened when he saw it. "M-My Lord... who are you sending that second letter to? Could it be..."
"Yes," Morgan sneered, his smile chilling to the bone. "Do you remember 'The Men in Gray' who came asking for information about Baron Lloyd at the tavern a few days ago? I found out that they are the personal hounds of 'The Guardians' from the Capital... The ones whose sole purpose is to eliminate 'anomalies' within the Veltine Empire."
Morgan meticulously wrote his message onto the black parchment.
"They are already keeping an eye on that boy Baron, and I... will be the one to hand them the definitive proof! I will inform them that Lloyd Weston is harboring the rebel knight Elisa Blackwood, and has dared to steal a 'Demon Slave' that poses a critical threat to the security of the Light God Cult!"
When he finished writing, Morgan held a stick of 'dull gray sealing wax' over a candle, letting it drip onto the envelope. He then pressed a completely blank, featureless stamp into the wax... It was the insignia of the Empire's most covert intelligence agency, a department so secret it didn't even have an official name!
"Send our fastest riders to deliver these two letters directly into the hands of the recipients before dawn!"
Morgan tossed the envelopes to the cavalry commander. "Baron Reinhard will crush him with the law and the military... And The Men in Gray will erase his very existence from the pages of history! That little brat... he dug his own grave the moment he stole from me!"
Back in the Verdant Territory, Lloyd Weston was sleeping soundly, believing he had achieved a 'perfect victory' by securing a legendary unit and fortifying his domain flawlessly against the coming Inquisitor.
Little did he know... Stealing the demon slave girl tonight was the spark that ignited an incredibly massive bomb!
The black letter currently galloping toward the dark underbelly of the Veltine Empire had just upgraded Lloyd's status from a 'suspicious border noble' to a 'Catastrophe-class Target' that the Imperial Shadow Unit was preparing to 'purge' personally!
The real storm was not the incoming Inquisitor... It was the faceless Grim Reapers, now raising their scythes, preparing to sever the head of the young Lord who possessed the [World Management System] !
