Chapter 17: The First Blood

Reborn as a Snow Wolf: My Bloodline Ancestor System

Before the first light of dawn could touch the frozen peaks of the Frostfang Mountains, the blizzard had already awakened.

Fierce winds swept relentlessly across Blackfang Forest, driving waves of snow through the towering pines until the entire wilderness vanished beneath a swirling veil of white.

The ancient mountains groaned beneath winter’s fury, while the frozen rivers lay hidden under layers of fresh snow.

Visibility had fallen to only a few body lengths, transforming the familiar forest into a silent battlefield where every shadow could conceal either an ally or an enemy.

High upon a snow-covered ridge overlooking the northern border, six Blackfang scouts moved like pale ghosts through the storm.

They advanced cautiously, their paws barely disturbing the fresh snow as they paused every few moments to taste the icy wind.

Each wolf understood the importance of silence. Their mission was not to seek glory through battle, but to discover the enemy’s movements before the enemy discovered them.

The lead scout suddenly froze.

His golden eyes narrowed toward the valley below.

At first, nothing seemed unusual beyond the endless curtain of snow.

Then, through the shifting blizzard, enormous shapes gradually emerged.

One after another, massive Ice Bears marched through the valley in disciplined formation.

Their broad shoulders carved paths through the snowdrifts with effortless strength, leaving deep craters where each heavy step landed.

Frost clung to their thick white fur while their dark eyes scanned every ridge and every cluster of trees with unwavering vigilance.

The scout’s breathing slowed.

There were far more than expected.

He quietly climbed onto a nearby boulder before lifting his muzzle toward the storm.

A long howl echoed through the mountains.

The mournful cry rolled across ridge after ridge before another howl answered from the eastern forest.

Then another from the western cliffs.

Within moments, the entire defensive network awakened.

The message spread across Blackfang Territory with remarkable speed.

The enemy has arrived.

Far away, near the heart of the northern forest, the Alpha stood motionless upon a rocky outcrop.

Snow gathered across his scarred white coat as the distant howls reached his ears one after another.

His piercing golden eyes slowly closed while he listened to each report hidden within the ancient language of wolf calls.

Three mountain passes.

Multiple enemy groups.

Exactly as he had predicted.

When he opened his eyes again, they burned with calm determination rather than fear.

Around him, dozens of veteran hunters waited silently for his command.

The Alpha stepped forward.

His deep voice remained steady despite the storm.

"The eastern ridge belongs to the Vanguard Hunters."

A group of lean gray wolves immediately bowed before disappearing into the blizzard.

"The Frozen Ravine belongs to Ambush Team One."

Another group vanished without hesitation.

"The reserve remains hidden."

"No wolf fights alone."

"We win by surviving."

Every warrior lowered their head in acknowledgment.

Not one questioned the order.

The Alpha watched them disappear into the storm before quietly raising his head toward the snow-covered sky.

His howl erupted across the mountains like thunder.

It wasn’t filled with rage.

It carried resolve.

Every wolf within Blackfang Territory heard it.

Every heart steadied.

Far beyond the forest, the Ice Bear Chieftain slowly lifted his head as the distant howl reached his ears.

A faint smile appeared.

"So..."

"The Alpha has made his choice."

The massive bears continued advancing without increasing their pace.

They neither rushed nor hesitated.

Their discipline rivaled that of the wolves themselves.

Moments later, the first clash erupted.

A group of Ice Bears entered a narrow mountain trail lined with towering pines whose branches bent beneath the weight of fresh snow. The forest appeared deserted.

Then...

The snow exploded.

Hidden wolves burst from concealed burrows beneath the drifts, striking from multiple directions before disappearing almost as quickly as they had appeared.

The surprise attack shattered the enemy’s formation for only a heartbeat, allowing the wolves to lure the advancing bears deeper into the twisting pass.

The Ice Bears answered immediately.

Instead of chasing individual wolves, they regrouped into a defensive circle, protecting one another while steadily pushing forward.

Their discipline impressed even the experienced hunters watching from above.

Elsewhere, another Blackfang unit raced across the frozen surface of a narrow stream.

They deliberately remained just ahead of a pursuing Ice Bear patrol, drawing them toward an area where the ice had become dangerously thin beneath recent snowfall.

The wolves leaped effortlessly onto solid ground.

The bears followed.

A tremendous crack echoed through the valley.

Part of the frozen stream collapsed beneath the enormous weight.

Sheets of ice shattered apart, plunging several bears into the freezing current below.

Roaring water carried broken ice downstream while the remaining warriors pulled their companions back onto solid ground.

The wolves had already vanished.

Only drifting snow remained behind.

The Alpha observed the unfolding battle from the highest ridge.

Every movement matched the strategy carved into the frozen map inside the Crystal Cave days earlier.

Never fight where the bears are strongest.

Strike.

Disappear.

Lead them into the mountain itself.

Around midday, another report arrived.

A young scout slid to a halt before the Alpha.

"The western ambush succeeded."

"Enemy advance delayed."

The Alpha nodded once.

"No pursuit."

"Return before they regroup."

The scout disappeared once more.

The old Alpha looked across the battlefield.

The wolves were not winning.

But neither were they losing.

They were buying something far more valuable.

Time.

Deep beneath the Frostfang Mountains, the Moonveil Sanctuary remained untouched by the chaos above.

The gentle warmth of the underground springs softened the icy air while countless blue crystals illuminated the ancient cavern with their tranquil glow.

Although fear still lingered among the younger cubs, the sanctuary no longer felt consumed by panic.

It had become a place of quiet determination.

Ash moved steadily between the frightened families carrying fresh water gathered from the steaming pools.

Whenever frightened cubs began crying after hearing the distant rumble of battle echoing faintly through the mountain, he patiently sat beside them until their trembling slowly eased.

Nearby, Elder Mira watched him thoughtfully.

Without speaking, she placed several unfamiliar herbs before him.

"Tell me which one eases fever."

Ash carefully lowered his nose toward each plant.

The earthy scent of one herb mixed with a faint sweetness.

Another carried a bitter fragrance.

After several moments, he gently nudged a cluster of silver-green leaves.

Elder Mira smiled.

"Correct."

She picked up another.

"And this one?"

Ash hesitated.

He remembered seeing similar leaves growing near damp rocks outside the Crystal Cave.

"This one slows bleeding."

The elderly healer nodded approvingly.

"Good."

"But remember."

She gently placed another darker herb beside it.

"They look similar."

"One heals."

"The other poisons."

Ash immediately focused harder.

Every lesson mattered now.

Far across the sanctuary, several younger cubs had begun arguing over a small pile of dried meat.

Before any elder could intervene, Ash quietly walked over.

He divided the food equally before giving away part of his own portion to the smallest cub among them.

The argument ended almost immediately.

Several elder wolves observed the scene without interrupting.

One quietly whispered,

"He doesn’t command."

Another nodded.

"They simply follow."

The oldest among them slowly smiled.

"That..."

"...cannot be taught."

Above the mountain, the war continued to spread.

Smoke rose where shattered trees marked the path of the advancing Ice Bears.

Fresh snow quickly covered the scars left behind by the morning’s fighting, but new battles erupted almost as quickly as the old ones disappeared.

From a distant ridge, the Ice Bear Chieftain calmly watched the battlefield unfold.

Scout after scout arrived with their reports.

"The wolves appear everywhere."

"Our advance keeps slowing."

"Several patrols have vanished."

The Chieftain remained silent.

Beside him, a younger Ice Bear slammed one enormous paw into the snow.

"They’re cowards."

"They refuse to fight us directly."

"Give the order."

"We’ll crush them."

The Chieftain slowly turned.

His calm gaze settled upon the impatient warrior.

"They’re trying to make us angry."

His deep voice remained steady.

"A patient hunter survives."

The young warrior lowered his head.

The Chieftain looked once more toward the endless forest stretching across the mountains.

Then he spoke words that caused even his veteran commanders to tense.

"If the wolves hide behind their forest..."

"We shall make the forest betray them."

His eyes hardened.

"Prepare the fire carriers."

"The trees will force them into the open."

Far away...

Standing alone upon the highest ridge...

The Alpha suddenly lifted his head.

Something deep within his instincts stirred.

The battle...

...was about to change.

The wind howled relentlessly across the Frostfang Mountains, carrying fresh snow over the countless tracks that crisscrossed Blackfang Forest.

By midday, the battlefield had become almost unrecognizable.

Valleys that had stood untouched only hours earlier now bore the scars of war.

Broken pines leaned over frozen streams, deep trenches marked the paths of charging Ice Bears, and the once-pristine snow had been churned into uneven ridges by the movements of both armies.

From the highest ridge overlooking the northern frontier, the Alpha remained perfectly still.

His scarred white coat blended with the storm itself, making him appear less like an ordinary wolf and more like an ancient guardian carved from the mountain.

His sharp golden eyes swept across the battlefield, studying every movement instead of becoming distracted by the chaos unfolding below.

Another scout emerged from the blizzard and lowered his head.

"The eastern ridge still holds."

"The Frozen Ravine delayed another advance."

"Our losses remain light."

The Alpha gave a slow nod.

"Continue the rotation."

"No patrol fights until exhausted."

"Every warrior returns alive if possible."

The scout disappeared into the storm.

The Alpha’s strategy had never depended upon defeating the Ice Bears in a single confrontation.

Every ambush, every retreat, and every hidden path served one purpose—to stretch the enemy farther into unfamiliar territory while forcing them to spend strength for every step they gained.

Far below, another clash erupted near a frozen gorge.

A patrol of Blackfang warriors burst from behind snow-covered boulders, forcing a group of advancing Ice Bears to halt.

The wolves moved with remarkable coordination, never lingering in one place.

They darted between the trees, forcing their opponents to constantly change direction while loose snow slid from the branches above.

Several bears attempted to pursue them through the dense forest, only to find themselves slowed by fallen logs and narrow passages that favored the lighter wolves.

Before the bears could fully regroup, the Blackfang patrol had already disappeared into the blizzard, leaving behind nothing but swirling snow and fading pawprints.

The Ice Bears refused to chase blindly.

Instead, they gathered once more into disciplined ranks before continuing their steady advance.

Their patience made them every bit as dangerous as their strength.

Watching from a distant ridge, the Ice Bear Chieftain quietly observed the battlefield.

Messenger after messenger delivered the same report.

"Our scouts keep losing sight of them."

"The wolves attack, then vanish."

"They know every corner of this forest."

Silence settled over the commanders.

One younger warrior stepped forward.

"If we continue like this..."

"We’ll spend days chasing shadows."

The Chieftain slowly looked toward the endless sea of pine trees stretching across the mountains.

His expression remained calm.

"Exactly."

"They want us to waste time."

His enormous paw rested upon the frozen ground.

"But forests..."

"...can become prisons."

He turned toward several veteran warriors.

"Prepare the fire carriers."

"We do not burn everything."

"We burn only enough."

"Smoke will drive them from hiding."

The surrounding bears exchanged solemn glances.

None questioned the order.

Far beneath the mountain, the Moonveil Sanctuary remained untouched by the fighting above.

The warm glow of blue crystals reflected across the underground springs while frightened cubs remained gathered close to their families.

Although the distant tremors occasionally reached the cavern, the sanctuary itself still felt like a fragile island of peace surrounded by an ocean of war.

Ash continued helping wherever he could.

He carried fresh water to exhausted healers, organized bundles of medicinal herbs under Elder Mira’s guidance, and patiently reassured younger cubs whenever distant echoes from above caused fear to spread through the sanctuary.

Elder Mira watched him carefully.

"You’ve learned quickly."

Ash lowered his head respectfully.

"I’m only doing what I can."

The elderly healer smiled faintly.

"That is where every great leader begins."

Nearby, one frightened cub quietly asked,

"Will our parents come back?"

Ash hesitated.

He looked toward the sealed tunnel leading to the surface.

Then he gently answered,

"They’re fighting so they can."

The cub slowly nodded before curling closer to his mother.

Several elders standing nearby silently exchanged glances.

No one had instructed Ash to comfort the younger cubs.

Yet somehow...

He always seemed to know exactly what they needed to hear.

Outside, the war intensified.

Dark smoke gradually rose beyond the northern forest.

The scent reached the Alpha long before the flames became visible.

His ears immediately rose.

Smoke.

His heart tightened.

The enemy had changed tactics.

The Alpha climbed onto the highest rock overlooking the battlefield.

His powerful howl echoed through the storm.

Every nearby patrol immediately stopped what they were doing.

"Fall back to the second defensive line."

"Do not pursue."

"Protect the valleys."

The command spread rapidly through the Blackfang ranks.

One by one, hidden patrols disengaged before the smoke could trap them.

The Ice Bear Chieftain watched the movement with quiet admiration.

"He adapts quickly."

A veteran commander beside him nodded.

"The Blackfang Alpha deserves his reputation."

The Chieftain remained silent.

Then he quietly ordered,

"Advance through the southern mountains."

"Move carefully."

"If another hidden path exists..."

"We will find it."

As evening approached, the blizzard became even fiercer.

Snow fell so heavily that the mountains themselves seemed to disappear beneath an endless white curtain.

The Alpha personally led a small reserve force toward the southern frontier, sensing that the enemy’s newest movement carried unusual purpose.

Hours passed.

Only the wind answered.

Then...

A lone figure stumbled through the blizzard.

One of the Blackfang scouts.

His breathing was ragged.

Snow clung to his blood-stained fur, and one foreleg dragged heavily behind him. Even so, he refused to stop until he reached the Alpha.

Several warriors rushed forward to support him.

The scout struggled to remain standing.

His eyes searched desperately for the Alpha.

"My Alpha..."

The old leader stepped closer.

"I’m here."

The scout drew one painful breath.

"They... found..."

"...the southern pass."

Silence consumed the mountain.

Even the wind seemed to fade.

The scout continued with fading strength.

"They’re not attacking..."

"...they’re circling."

"They’re heading..."

"...toward the hidden valley."

His strength finally gave out.

The exhausted warrior collapsed into the snow.

Elder wolves immediately surrounded him, but the Alpha already understood the meaning behind those final words.

The Ice Bear Chieftain had never intended to win through a frontal assault.

He had discovered another objective.

Moonveil Sanctuary.

The Alpha slowly lifted his head toward the distant southern mountains.

For the first time since the war had begun, genuine urgency flashed across his face.

Without hesitation, he turned toward his commanders.

"You hold this line."

"If they break through..."

"Fall back to the western ridge."

One veteran stepped forward.

"My Alpha..."

"And you?"

The Alpha’s gaze never left the storm.

"They’re coming for our future."

His voice carried absolute resolve.

"I’ll meet them there."

With a powerful leap, the great white wolf disappeared into the blizzard, racing across the snow-covered mountains with unmatched speed.

Around him, the storm roared louder than ever, as if the Frostfang Mountains themselves understood that the fate of the Blackfang Pack was no longer being decided at the frontlines.

It was being decided on the road to Moonveil Sanctuary.

To be continued...
