He let out a slow, satisfied exhale and leaned back in his swivel chair.

The eight hundred dollars he had borrowed from his mother and brother were officially invested.

By Wednesday afternoon, a professional condenser microphone, a pristine audio interface, heavy-duty stands, and a bulk pack of acoustic soundproofing foam would be sitting on the front porch.

But as Jarad closed the laptop and looked around his bedroom, the reality of his workspace set in.

His bed took up half the floor space, his dresser was overflowing, and the walls were nothing but bare drywall.

It wasn’t just unprofessional; it was an acoustic nightmare.

Sound would bounce wildly off the hard surfaces, creating a muddy, amateur echo.

Plus, Carmella had laid down the law: when Ashley arrived from New Jersey, the bedroom door had to remain wide open.

Trying to record a deeply emotional, vulnerable vocal take while his mother watched television down the hall was a guaranteed way to ruin the vibe of the session.

He needed a dedicated space.

A real studio.

Jarad stood up and padded down the quiet hallway.

Tucked at the very end, squeezed between the guest bathroom and the staircase, was a small storage closet the family used as a catch-all junk room.

He turned the brass knob, pushed the door open, and flicked on the single overhead bulb.

The space was roughly the size of a walk-in closet, completely packed to the ceiling.

Most people would just see a headache, but Jarad looked at the dimensions.

The walls were close together.

If he lined this tight, enclosed space with the acoustic foam coming in the mail, it would absorb sound perfectly.

It was the ultimate, dead-silent vocal booth.

Without a second thought, Jarad rolled up his sleeves.

He spent the next three hours in complete, focused silence.

He carried heavy boxes of Christmas ornaments up to the attic.

He dragged the broken furniture out to the garage and stacked the winter coats neatly in a downstairs closet.

He wiped down the baseboards, scrubbed the scuff marks off the drywall, and swept years of accumulated dust off the hardwood floor.

The physical labor was incredibly therapeutic.

Every box he moved felt like a physical manifestation of clearing out the toxic clutter of his past life.

He was quite literally making room for his future.

By the time the sun fully set, the small room was completely empty, spotless, and smelling faintly of lemon cleaner.

Jarad walked back to his bedroom, grabbed his acoustic guitar, and brought it down the hall.

He didn’t have his new interface or microphone yet, so he couldn’t record any actual stems, but he wanted to feel the acoustics of his new sanctuary and map out the blueprint of the track in his head.

He sat down cross-legged on the clean hardwood floor, pulled the guitar onto his lap, and began to strum.

The small, bare room amplified the beautiful, sweeping chords.

Jarad closed his eyes, playing the main progression for Life’s a Mess, his calloused fingers sliding effortlessly over the frets.

He could hear the massive, cinematic bounce of the final product perfectly in his mind.

But as he let the final chord ring out and fade into silence, Jarad paused, tapping his fingers against the wooden body of the guitar.

In his past life, the original track was driven purely by the guitar and the drums.

It was a masterpiece, but Jarad remembered something else.

Years after the song had been released, a fan had uploaded an unofficial remix to YouTube, laying a heartbreaking, classical violin over the instrumental.

Jarad had heard it once, and the haunting contrast between the heavy trap bass and the weeping strings had stuck with him ever since.

It elevated the song from a standard ballad to something entirely transcendent.

Jarad looked down at his hands.

He could easily boot up his laptop, load a digital MIDI plugin, and fake a string section with the press of a button.

It would sound clean, and most people wouldn’t even know the difference.

But Jarad shook his head.

He didn’t want a computer algorithm simulating emotion.

He wanted the raw, unpolished friction of a real wooden bow dragging across real strings.

He wanted the slight imperfections and the breathing soul of a physical instrument.

He set his guitar down on the floor, a new mission forming in his mind.

He didn’t know the first thing about playing the violin, and hiring a professional studio session player would cost money he didn’t have.

But he knew exactly where to find a building full of young, hungry musicians who played classical instruments every single day.

When his mental health day was over and he walked back into Homewood-Flossmoor High School tomorrow morning, he wasn’t going to skip class.

He was going straight to the school orchestra.
