The first rule of evidence was not to eat it.

My new body disagreed.

Pale fibers tightened around the leather grip of my appraisal knife.Full novel: Reborn as the Last Mimic — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

The System waited.

[CLAIM PROPERTY AVAILABLE]

Kest tightened her claw around my rear strap.

“Calder.”

“I am considering my options.”

“You are salivating.”

“I do not have saliva.”

“That is somehow worse.”

Greymarrow’s living stone carried my words across the conduit platform.

Tallow’s flame bent toward the knife.

He looked from the blood-darkened silver to my open lid.

Then shook his head.

Two votes against consuming the murder weapon.

Professional consensus had occasionally been built on less.

I withdrew the fiber.

The System prompt vanished.

Hunger did not.

The knife remained buried in Greymarrow’s heart.

For now.

“Good,” Kest said.

“I did not agree with you.”

“You stopped trying to eat it. I am comfortable interpreting results.”

I moved closer to the clamp.

Direct contact with the black metal resolved its construction more clearly than Greymarrow’s projections ever had.

Three authority jaws.

Two were inactive.

The first had lost its basis when Greymarrow’s refusal was restored to the record.

The second had failed when the Belonging Gate recognized five living residents with standing to object.

The third remained locked around the conduit.

Custodial continuity.

One chain left.

The knife passed through the center of all three.

Not physically trapped by the blade.

Legally trapped by the mechanism surrounding it.

I pressed my keyplate to the review housing.

Blue script appeared.

MANUAL HEART REVIEW

ORIGINAL WITNESS: CALDER VOSS

WITNESS STATE: OPEN

CURRENT AGENCY: VERIFIED

Then:

CUSTODIAL RELEASE REQUEST: BLOCKED

CAUSE: ACTIVE HEART WITNESS

Kest leaned over my lid.

“Still the same circle.”

“Yes.”

“Nera cannot leave because the knife is active.”

“Yes.”

“And you cannot safely remove the knife because Nera’s authority is still holding the clamp.”

“Yes.”

“That seems badly designed.”

“For legitimate emergencies, it is probably excellent.”

She stared at me.

“You make terrible systems sound reasonable.”

“That was once a marketable skill.”

Tallow tapped the inactive jaw nearest him.

Tok.

Then the active one.

Tok-tok.

He understood the problem.

Two locks gone.

One lock holding another lock closed.

I searched the review controls.

No Signal Recognition.

No remote intuition.

Only an appraiser’s credentials touching equipment they had been built to operate.

The menu expanded.

WITNESS SERVICE OPTIONS

CLOSE SURVEY

SUSPEND WITNESS

TRANSFER WITNESS

Close.

Obviously.

I selected it.

The answer arrived immediately.

CLOSE SURVEY — DENIED

POSTMORTEM CONTINUITY APPEND ACTIVE

Below:

CONTINUITY CONDITIONS UNRESOLVED

Kest saw my hinge tighten.

“Not that easy?”

“No.”

“Good. I was beginning to distrust the chapter.”

I ignored that for professional reasons.

Transfer Witness was worse.

VERIFIED SUBSTITUTE REQUIRED

CUSTODIAL KEY REQUIRED

The heart crew’s path.

I backed out.

One option remained.

SUSPEND WITNESS

I opened it.

A warning appeared.

SERVICE SUSPENSION

Temporarily prevents the witness anchor from asserting active survey authority during manual instrument inspection.

MAXIMUM DURATION: 60 SECONDS

SURVEY REMAINS OPEN

AUTOMATIC RESTORATION ON EXPIRY

I read it twice.

Then a third time.

Kest waited.

“What?”

“There is a maintenance window.”

“How long?”

“Sixty seconds.”

“That is not a window. That is a threat with numbers.”

Correct.

I continued reading.

DEPENDENT AUTHORITY STATES RE-EVALUATE DURING SUSPENSION

That mattered.

Nera’s release request had already satisfied every local condition except the active witness.

If I suspended the witness— the office would re-evaluate.

Custodial continuity could release.

The final authority jaw could lose power.

And then— maybe— the knife could come out before the witness returned.

Kest understood the shape of the idea without knowing the System text.

“You make the knife stop counting long enough for Nera’s release to go through.”

“Yes.”

“And then we pull it out.”

“If the final jaw opens.”

“If.”

“I remain committed to accuracy.”

She stared at the clamp.

“What happens at sixty seconds?”

“The witness comes back.”

“With the knife where?”

“Whatever location it occupies at the time.”

“That sounds important.”

It was.

If the knife remained inside the conduit when the witness restored, the clamp could reassert itself.

If we removed it while custodial authority was still active, we might trigger an emergency response we did not understand.

We needed the sequence exactly right.

Suspend witness.

Nera’s pending release re-evaluates.

Custodial authority depowers.

Open the final jaw.

Remove the knife.

All before sixty seconds.

Tallow pointed at the final jaw.

Then at his flame.

“Heat may help.”

He nodded.

Kest looked at the black locking arm.

“I can pull it.”

I looked at her braced wing.

She caught the direction of my attention.

“With my claws.”

“Your wing is attached to several of them.”

“I am aware.”

“If the brace tears—”

“Calder.”

“Yes?”

“Sixty seconds.”

Fair.

I checked the review housing again.

One additional warning waited at the bottom.

SERVICE SUSPENSION MAY BE RECORDED BY CONNECTED CONTINUANCE SYSTEMS

Of course.

The Custodial Office’s external transfer line was dark.

The network conduits at the heart were not.

Whatever happened here might be noticed.

Kest read my silence.

“Another problem?”

“Possibly an alarm.”

“Will waiting improve that?”

“No.”

“Then we have achieved clarity.”

I appreciated her increasingly aggressive approach to appraisal.

Greymarrow trembled beneath us.

I pressed my keyplate against the living conduit.

“This is your heart.”

Warmth answered.

“Your risk.”

Fear.

Then:

No more knife.

Permission.

Not mine to assume.

Now granted.

I selected:

SUSPEND WITNESS

The review panel changed.

CONFIRM?

I hesitated.

The fibers inside my hollow strained toward the knife again.

Kest noticed.

“If this works, you are not eating it afterward.”

“That remains under evaluation.”

“No.”

“Your authority over my diet is unclear.”

“I have a pry bar.”

A strong governance model.

“Ready?”

Kest planted both rear claws against the maintenance shelf.

Tallow crouched beside the final jaw.

His injured leg trembled.

He shifted his weight onto the good side, one hand against the wall and the other raised toward the clamp.

I confirmed.

The world changed.

Not physically.

Legally.

The knife’s witness filament went dark.

High.

Low.

High— stopped.

For the first time since I had heard my sequence inside Greymarrow’s heart, there was silence.

The review panel began counting.

SERVICE SUSPENSION: 00:59

Greymarrow gasped through the floor.

Far above us, something answered.

A deep mechanical release.

Nera’s pending request.

The final authority line flickered.

00:55

“Again,” I told Greymarrow.

The dungeon pushed.

The custodial line dimmed.

Then brightened.

Not gone.

Kest grabbed the final jaw.

“It is still locked.”

Tallow placed both hands against the black metal.

Amber heat spread.

His injured leg folded.

He caught himself against my side.

“Stay down,” Kest said.

Tallow glared.

But remained on one knee.

00:48

The review panel updated.

CUSTODIAN RELEASE — RE-EVALUATION IN PROGRESS

Too slow.

“Nera already gave consent,” I said.

The living stone carried the demand upward.

“Greymarrow already agreed. Residents already witnessed it. Nothing remains to decide.”

The heart pulsed.

Once.

Again.

The custodial line changed.

Blue to white.

00:41

A message appeared.

LOCAL CUSTODIAN RELEASE — ACCEPTED

Kest smiled.

Too early.

The final jaw remained closed.

I touched it.

The custodial authority was gone.

The hardware had simply failed to notice.

A mechanical retention pin still held the jaw shut.

Not authority.

Just old metal.

“Lower edge,” I said. “There is a safety pin.”

Kest shifted one claw.

“Found it.”

“Push inward before lifting.”

She pushed.

Tallow heated the hinge.

00:33

The pin moved half an inch.

Stopped.

Corrosion.

Kest hissed.

Her braced wing struck the conduit wall.

Pain crossed her face.

“Wing.”

“I know.”

She changed position.

Both rear claws against the shelf.

Good wing-claw on the pin.

Injured wing held tight.

00:27

Tallow’s flame turned blue.

The black hinge expanded.

The pin moved.

One inch.

Then released.

The final jaw opened.

Greymarrow convulsed.

The authority line went dark completely.

00:22

The knife remained embedded.

No clamp holding it now.

Only living crystal.

I wrapped three fibers around the hilt.

Pulled.

Nothing.

Kest stared at me.

“Why is it not moving?”

I pressed one fiber along the exposed edge.

“The living crystal has grown tight around the blade.”

Of course it had.

However long the knife had remained inside Greymarrow, the dungeon had been surviving around it.

00:18

“Greymarrow.”

Pain answered.

“I need you to let it go.”

Fear.

The knife was wound into living crystal.

Removing it would hurt.

Leaving it would be worse.

Pull.

I pulled.

The crystal screamed through every board in my body.

Not sound.

Pressure.

My fibers tightened.

Kest seized my rear strap with both rear claws and her good wing-claw.

Tallow pressed his shoulder against my side.

His injured leg slid.

He repositioned without standing.

00:12

The knife moved.

A fraction.

Blue light spilled around the blade.

I pulled again.

The System flashed.

[ELIGIBLE OBJECT DETECTED]

[CLAIM PROPERTY AVAILABLE]

Not now.

I dismissed it.

00:09

Kest growled.

“Move.”

“I am attempting to.”

“That was directed at the knife.”

Useful clarification.

Greymarrow contracted around the conduit.

Then released.

The knife came free.

All at once.

I flew backward into Kest.

Kest struck the wall.

Tallow rolled onto his good side.

The appraisal knife clattered across the stone shelf.

Blood-dark silver.

Black grip.

Mine.

00:05

The witness filament reactivated.

High.

Low.

High.

But the sound came from the knife lying on stone.

Not from inside Greymarrow.

The review panel flashed.

HEART WITNESS ANCHOR: LOST

Then:

WITNESS RESTORATION COMPLETE

SURVEY STATE: OPEN — UNANCHORED

The countdown vanished.

No clamp closed.

Nothing re-entered the heart.

Greymarrow’s core pulsed.

Once.

Twice.

Then harder than I had ever felt it.

Blue light raced through the conduit.

The black clamp, deprived of all three authority lines, loosened around the crystal.

One jaw fell open.

Then another.

Then the entire assembly sagged away from the heart.

Greymarrow breathed.

Not metaphorically.

Air moved through the cavern.

Dust lifted from the shelf.

Every blue vein in the review gallery brightened at once.

Tallow raised his flame.

Kest stared over the railing.

“Did we—”

“No.”

She looked at me.

“You could let me finish once.”

“We removed the anchor. We did not stop the transfer network, the heart crew, or the demolition.”

Her beak curved.

“There he is.”

The living floor warmed beneath us.

A message reached the review housing from the Custodial Office.

CUSTODIAN RELEASE: INITIATED

Not completed.

Initiated.

Nera was finally leaving the office.

That was enough for one minute’s work.

Then the black network conduit above the heart pulsed.

Once.

A sharp white signal traveled physically through the exposed transfer line and away from Greymarrow.

Kest saw it too.

“That looked like an alarm.”

“Yes.”

The network panel changed.

SOURCE ANCHOR LOST

RESERVED SLOT 10 — RETAINED

Then:

CONTINUANCE EXCEPTION RECORDED

The reservation remained.

We had not escaped the network.

We had merely stopped cooperating with it.

Tallow pointed toward the knife.

It lay beside my base.

The object that had killed me.

The object I had almost consumed.

Now no longer inside Greymarrow.

I touched the guard with one fiber.

Not Claim Property.

Inspection.

With the clamp gone, a section of the knife’s witness tang was visible that had previously been hidden beneath black metal.

A tiny service stamp had been pressed into it.

I leaned closer.

Kest followed.

“What?”

The stamp carried an installation sequence.

Date.

Authority.

Chain-of-custody marker.

My death had been registered first.

The knife had entered the heart conduit eight minutes later.

The continuity append followed three minutes after that.

Eleven minutes after death.

Exactly as the earlier record had shown.

But now I had the missing middle event.

HEART ANCHOR INSTALLED

INSTALLATION AUTHORITY: PROVOST L. VEYR

Below it:

OVERRIDE SOURCE: OFFICE OF CONTINUANCE

Kest went very still.

“Veyr put it there.”

“His authority did.”

“Difference?”

“A signature proves authorization.”

I looked at the knife.

“It does not prove whose hand held it.”

Not yet.

But someone had murdered me.

Eight minutes later, Veyr’s authority installed my bloodied knife into Greymarrow’s heart.

Three minutes after that, the Office of Continuance used the installation to append authority to a dead man’s survey.

The sequence was no longer a theory.

It was evidence.

Kest looked at the knife.

“You are definitely not eating that.”

I closed my lid over the hunger.

The knife had already killed me once.

I was not going to let a mimic destroy what it could finally prove.
