Chapter 19: True Primordial Flame Demon (Diablo)

Reborn as The Seventh Prince of Eternal Winter

The frozen lake stretched out in front of them, wide and still, like glass laid over something dark that never slept. No wind moved here. No sound touched the air. The whole cave felt like it was holding its breath, waiting for something it had waited a long time for.

Black ice covered the water, smooth and unbroken. It caught the faint blue light that leaked from the cave walls above and threw it back in soft, cold patterns. At the center of the lake stood a throne carved from dark crystal, empty and silent, sitting there the way old things sit, patient, still, like it had been waiting for this one moment for a thousand years.

Theon stepped forward, slow and careful, his boots sliding just a little on the ice. His chest felt tight. Every part of him wanted to grab Lyra by the arm and run back the way they came, but his legs kept moving him closer instead, one step, then another, like something in the cave was pulling him in.

Lyra stood beside him, staring at the throne. Her face had gone strange, distant, like she was looking at something from a dream she couldn’t quite remember. Theon glanced at her and felt his stomach drop. She didn’t look scared. She looked like she recognized it.

She didn’t know why her eyes had gone straight to the crystal, or why her chest had gone warm the moment she saw it, warm in a way that had nothing to do with the cold cave around her. Some small, quiet part of her wanted to walk toward it. She didn’t understand that part. She had never felt it before tonight.

"Lyra?" he said quietly.

She didn’t answer. She couldn’t. Her mouth felt far away from the rest of her.

Fen let out a low growl that rolled through the cave and bounced off the walls. His ears were flat against his skull.

"Master. Something is wrong."

Then the ice under the throne cracked.

Crack.

Theon’s whole body went still.

Crack.

His hand found the hilt of his sword without him telling it to.

Crack.

Dark flames rose slowly out of the broken ice, climbing upward without melting a single drop around them. The air in the cave changed all at once. Cold bit into Theon’s skin from one side while heat pressed against him from the other, and for a second he couldn’t breathe right, like his body didn’t know which sensation to believe.

He pulled his shadow sword free and stepped in front of Lyra without thinking about it. That part of him never had to think. It just happened

A voice spoke from behind them, calm and low, the kind of calm that made the hair on Theon’s arms stand up.

"You brought her. Just as I hoped."

Theon spun around so fast his boots nearly slipped out from under him. His heart slammed against his ribs so hard it hurt.

A tall man stood on the ice like he had always been standing there, like the cave had simply grown him out of the stone. His hair was black as the space between stars. His eyes glowed a deep, molten gold, and when Theon looked into them he felt something cold slide down the back of his neck. A long dark coat hung off his shoulders and moved on its own, drifting slowly even though the air was dead still. Around one wrist hung old broken chains, rusted almost to nothing.

The weight of him alone was enough to make it hard to stand straight.

Fen’s fur rose along his spine in a stiff wave.

Theon lifted his sword, and he hated how much his arm shook doing it. He forced his voice to come out steady anyway. "Who are you?"

The man placed a hand over his chest and gave a small bow, polite in a way that felt almost like mockery.

"My name is Diablo."

The air itself seemed to flinch at the sound of it.

Fen’s crimson eyes went wide, and for the first time since Theon had known him, the wolf looked afraid.

"I am a Primordial Flame True Demon of the Demon Realm," Diablo went on, his voice unhurried, almost gentle. "Long ago, I served the Primordial Flame Empress. For countless years I was sealed beneath the Imperial Palace, waiting in the dark for a day I always knew would come."

Theon’s pulse pounded in his ears. A true primordial demon. Standing right in front of him, breathing the same air.

Lyra took a slow step back, and Theon felt her hand brush against his sleeve, trembling.

Diablo looked at her, and something in his expression softened in a way that made Theon’s skin crawl more than any snarl could have. Then his golden eyes moved back to Theon.

"The seal that once held me has finally weakened."

Theon’s jaw tightened. "What do you want from her?"

Diablo began to walk, unhurried, black flame blooming under each footstep and vanishing the instant his foot lifted again.

"The girl beside you carries an ancient power," he said. "The seal placed on her was never only protection."

"What are you talking about?" Theon’s voice cracked a little on the last word, and he hated that too.

Diablo smiled, but it never reached his eyes. "Someone in your royal family already knows the truth."

Theon froze.

His father.

Duke Aldric.

The name hit him like a fist to the chest. One of them knew. Maybe both. All those quiet dinners, all those times his father had looked at Lyra a second too long, and Theon had never once asked why.

He didn’t wait to think it through.

"Shadow Leap!"

He vanished into black mist and came out right behind Diablo, his sword already swinging for the demon’s neck.

Clang.

Diablo caught the blade between two fingers without turning his head. The sword stopped as if it had struck a mountain instead of flesh.

Theon’s eyes went wide. His mind screamed that it wasn’t possible, even as his body already knew it was true.

Diablo tilted his head, studying him the way someone studies an insect that surprised them. "Fast." A pause. "But not enough."

The blast came before Theon could brace for it. Black fire exploded outward and threw him across the ice like he weighed nothing at all. He hit the ground hard, rolled twice, and forced himself back up on shaking legs, chest heaving, lungs burning.

He didn’t let himself stop to feel the pain. There wasn’t time.

"Shadow Strike!"

Dozens of black daggers formed in the air around him and shot forward at once, a storm aimed at a single point.

Diablo raised one hand, almost bored, and dark flame swallowed most of the daggers before they reached him. But a few slipped through and buried themselves in his shoulder and chest.

For one bright second, hope flared in Theon’s chest so strong it almost hurt.

Then the wounds closed on their own, no scar left behind, like they had never happened.

Diablo looked down at himself, curious, almost pleased.

"Interesting," he said. "Shadow mana can actually harm me."

His smile turned real for the first time, and somehow that was worse than everything before it.

Theon planted his feet. "Shadow Shield!"

A dark barrier wrapped around him, and he charged again, refusing to let his fear slow him down even though it was screaming at him to stop.

Leap. Slash. Leap. Slash.

He moved faster with each strike until he was barely more than a blur of shadow, ice cracking under his boots with every landing. Diablo blocked every hit with one hand, but Theon noticed, even through the chaos, that he was pushing the demon back, just barely, one small step at a time.

His arms felt like they were on fire. His lungs burned. He kept going anyway.

Fen finally threw himself into the fight with a roar that shook dust from the ceiling.

"Blizzard Breath!"

A wave of freezing wind slammed into Diablo’s side, and for the first time the demon actually staggered.

Something close to joy cracked through Theon’s chest. We moved him. We actually moved him.

Diablo’s gold eyes flicked to the wolf, surprise flashing across his face. "A Primordial Frost Fenrir. No wonder."

Fen gathered shadow mana around his claws, black energy twisting together with frost until they became one force.

"Shadow Attack!"

He struck Diablo’s side with everything he had.

The sound of tearing flesh filled the cave. Dark red blood welled up along the wound, bright against Diablo’s pale skin.

Diablo looked down at it slowly. Then he looked at Fen.

And he laughed. Soft, quiet, with no anger in it at all.

"Excellent."

That laugh scared Theon more than any roar ever could have. He felt it in his stomach, cold and heavy. The black flame around Diablo swelled outward all at once, swallowing the space around him. The whole lake trembled under their feet. Ice melted and refroze in the same breath. The heat grew so thick that Lyra gasped behind him, struggling to pull air into her lungs.

"Fen! Fall back!" Theon shouted, raising his shield.

Too late.

Diablo lifted one finger, almost lazy about it, and a beam of black fire shot out.

The sound was enormous. Fen was thrown clean across the lake and slammed into the far wall of ice, and for one terrible second he didn’t move at all.

Theon didn’t think. He threw himself in front of Lyra, arms spread wide.

"Shadow Shield!"

The fire hit the barrier with a force that rattled his bones.

Crack.

The shield split down the middle.

Crack.

Light poured through the gap.

Crack.

It shattered completely, and Theon flew backward, skidding across the ice on his back. Pain tore through his chest like something alive, and the edges of his vision went dark and fuzzy. He fought to stay awake through sheer stubbornness alone.

He made himself stand anyway, swaying, barely holding his own weight.

In that moment the truth settled into him, plain and heavy. We cannot win. Not now. Not like this. Even knowing it, he lifted his broken sword and pointed it at Diablo. His arm shook. He didn’t lower it.

Diablo looked at him for a long, quiet moment, something unreadable moving behind his golden eyes.

"You are far weaker than me," he said. "Yet you still stand between me and her." His gaze slid past Theon to Lyra. "How interesting."

Then, without warning, the black flame around him faded away. The pressure in the cave eased all at once, like the whole room had finally let out the breath it had been holding.

The fight was over. Just like that.

Not because Theon had won it.

Because Diablo had chosen to end it.

He began walking toward Lyra, slow, unhurried, each footstep echoing across the ice.

Panic tore through Theon’s chest. "Lyra, get back!" He tried to move, tried to throw himself between them one more time, but his legs finally gave out from under him and refused to hold his weight. All he could do was watch.

On the far side of the lake, Fen struggled to lift himself off the ice, blood staining the white surface beneath him.

Diablo stopped in front of Lyra and towered over her small frame. Theon was certain, in that one awful second, that he was about to watch her die in front of him and there was nothing he could do to stop it.

Instead, Diablo lowered himself slowly to one knee and bowed his head.

The cave went completely silent.

Theon stared, unable to make sense of what he was seeing. Fen went still too, something like recognition crossing his face. Diablo bowed his head lower and spoke, soft, almost reverent.

"Arise."

Ancient fire spread across the surface of the lake, racing outward from where he knelt. The black crystal throne began to glow from the inside, light bleeding through the dark stone like something alive.

Diablo’s voice filled the cave, rich with a relief that sounded almost like grief.

"My Empress."

Lyra’s eyes snapped open.

Golden red flame ignited where her ordinary eyes had been. The temperature around her exploded upward, and her silver hair lifted and drifted in an invisible storm.

Then it happened all at once.

A pillar of ancient fire tore up through the lake and shot toward the ceiling, ripping through solid rock like it was nothing more than paper. The whole cave shook, dust and broken ice raining down around them.

The flame pierced straight through the mountain and burst into the night sky, a column of fire visible for miles. The sky turned red from horizon to horizon, like heaven itself had caught alight. Miles away, Frostfang Forest lit up bright as morning, every tree thrown into sharp orange edges.

Theon stared upward, his voice barely more than a breath. "Oh no." His throat felt tight. "What have I done?" Fen lifted his head toward the burning sky, his voice quiet with both wonder and dread.

"So this is the power of..."

The flame kept climbing, refusing to stop.

Even the distant capital saw it rise.

At the Imperial Palace, guards froze mid step, staring toward the horizon without a word. Nobles rushed to their windows and pressed their hands against the cold glass. Mages went pale as they looked out toward the mountains, already whispering old warnings to each other in low, frightened voices.

On the highest balcony of the palace, the Emperor stood alone, watching without moving. Red fire burned in his eyes, a second flame reflected there.

For a long moment he said nothing.

Then he closed his eyes.

"So the prophecy was inevitable after all."

Far away in the heart of the Ancient Forest, Lyra rose above the frozen lake, wrapped in fire that never burned her, surrounded by a light that bent the air itself.

Diablo remained kneeling before her, still, his head bowed.

And Theon could only lie broken on the ice and watch, helpless, as the little sister he had sworn his whole life to protect began to awaken into something far beyond anything he had ever let himself imagine. Whatever came next, he already knew nothing between them would ever be simple again.
