Chapter 21: The Sword of Ice and Shadow

Reborn as The Seventh Prince of Eternal Winter

The cave trembled, and cracks spread across the frozen lake like veins opening beneath the surface as ancient flames rose from the crystal hovering above the throne.

Fen stood over Theon’s unconscious body, tail low, ears flattened against his skull in a way that made him look far younger than his twenty thousand years. He had seen empires fall. He had watched great hunters die badly. None of it had prepared him for the sight of his master lying still on the ice.

"Master... wake up." His voice cracked on the second word, and he hated himself for it.

Diablo held the Flame Crystal loosely in one hand, golden eyes fixed on Lyra as though Fen weren’t worth his attention at all. "The awakening is accelerating."

The flames around Lyra burned brighter, casting the cavern in shifting gold and blood-red light.

A growl rumbled low in Fen’s chest as he stepped forward, placing himself between Diablo and Theon’s still form. Every instinct told him to run. Twenty thousand years of survival had taught him exactly how outmatched he was. He stayed anyway. "I won’t let you take another step."

Diablo glanced at him, unbothered, almost fond, the way a man might regard a dog that had learned a new trick. "You are brave, little Fenrir." His tone didn’t shift even slightly when he added, "But this is no longer a battle you can win."

He raised one hand, and black flame gathered around his fingers like smoke given weight.

Fen bared his fangs and readied himself to spring, muscles coiling beneath his fur, already bracing for the pain he knew was coming.

Then everything changed.

A wave of cold swept through the cave, sudden and absolute, the kind that didn’t creep in but simply arrived, as though the world itself had exhaled. Diablo stopped mid-motion. The black flame around his fingers thinned. The frozen lake groaned beneath them, deep and resonant, splitting outward from a single point.

Frost bloomed across Theon’s body where he lay.

Fen’s eyes went wide. "Master?"

The temperature dropped fast enough that even Diablo’s composure slipped, just for an instant, a flicker of surprise on a face that hadn’t shown much of anything all night. Ice climbed the cavern walls in branching patterns. The air turned white with drifting frost, thick enough to taste.

A pale blue glow wrapped around Theon, and his body rose slowly off the ice, suspended as though held by hands no one could see.

Something old stirred in him—the part of Theon that had learned to fight before he’d learned to think, the buried instinct his body remembered even when his mind was gone. It rose now to meet the cold, recognizing it, answering it.

His closed eyes snapped open, glowing with a cold blue light that held no warmth and, more unsettlingly, no feeling at all. Only focus remained, sharp and absolute—the eyes of someone who wasn’t quite there.

Diablo stared at him. "What kind of state is this?"

Theon didn’t answer. He simply moved, guided by something that no longer needed conscious thought.

"Shadow Leap."

He vanished with a soft rush of displaced air, and Diablo turned only just in time to catch a blade of pure ice against his forearm.

The impact rang out sharp and metallic, driving him back a full step.

Fen stared, frozen in place. "Master...?"

Theon pressed forward without pause. Ancient ice javelins condensed behind him in rapid succession—five, then ten, then fifteen—a storm of glittering spears surging as one. Diablo burned them from the air with a wide sweep of black flame.

But before the last javelin had finished burning, Theon was already behind him.

A line of frost opened across Diablo’s back in a single clean stroke. The demon’s eyes widened, just slightly, and he reached back to touch the wound.

Blood.

He stared at his own fingers as though the sight itself were an insult—the first wound he’d taken in longer than he cared to remember. "This is impossible."

Theon raised his hand, and dark shadow mana coiled around the ice blade in his grip. The two energies twisted together, resisting at first, then yielding, folding into one another until the sword itself began to change beneath the strain. Black frost spread across its surface like something alive. Silver mist curled off the edge in slow, deliberate wisps.

It was not a technique he had been taught. It was not a technique anyone had been taught. Somewhere beneath the ice in his mind, two truths about himself had finally recognized each other and refused to stay separate.

The cave shuddered with the weight of it.

Fen’s breath caught. "He merged them..."

Diablo studied the new blade for a long moment, and for the first time since the fight began, real surprise crossed his face—not fear, but something closer to hunger. He had spent centuries collecting powerful things. He recognized one when he saw it. "A fusion born on instinct, mid-battle. How rare."

Theon vanished again, the space around him rippling with each leap as he circled Diablo from every direction at once. The new blade flashed through the darkness in rapid, ringing strikes, each one met by a wall of black flame, and with every collision more frost crawled up Diablo’s arms, spreading like frozen veins beneath his skin.

Then Theon appeared directly behind him, close enough to feel the heat radiating off the demon’s shoulders.

"Shadow Edge."

The blade punched through Diablo’s guard and opened a deep wound across his shoulder in one motion. The force sent him hurtling backward across the lake, straight through the black crystal throne, sliding to a stop in a spray of shattered ice.

Fen could barely find his voice. "He’s pushing back a primordial demon."

Diablo rose slowly, black flame licking around the wound in an attempt to seal it shut, but the frost refused to melt, clinging stubbornly to his skin like it had made a decision. His golden eyes locked onto Theon with something new in them—not anger, but genuine, unhurried interest—the look of a collector who has just found the one piece missing from his set.

"This power." He glanced down at the humming silver mist still clinging to the blade’s edge. "Ice that carries shadow. Interesting."

Theon said nothing. He couldn’t. Whatever part of him was still watching from behind the blue light had no say in what came next. His body moved again, faster, appearing above Diablo in one strike and behind him in the next, cutting through the cavern like a rolling storm. Diablo was driven back again and again, unable to fully avoid what was landing on him for the first time all night. Another cut opened across his chest. Another across his arm.

Fen watched, hardly able to process what he was seeing, some small, foolish part of him already hoping.

Then Diablo laughed low, delighted, the sound echoing strangely off the frozen walls. "Excellent."

Black flame erupted from his body all at once, and the cave seemed to catch fire with heat, forcing Theon back a step even in his hollow, instinct-driven state. For just a moment, something flickered behind the blue glow in his eyes—not quite thought, but the ghost of it—straining against the ice like a hand pressed to the underside of a frozen lake.

Diablo raised both hands. "Enough."

A massive sphere of black fire bloomed above him, and the ice beneath it began to melt, hissing and steaming where the heat touched it. Even Fen retreated a step, fur bristling against his will.

Diablo’s smile faded into something quieter, almost respectful. "You have shown me something I did not expect, Seventh Prince." His voice dropped lower. "But this ends here."

He thrust both hands forward, and the sphere of black fire tore across the cavern with a deafening roar.

Theon raised the fused blade in answer, frost and shadow surging together one last time as the two powers met head-on. For one suspended moment, the entire cave became a battlefield of black fire and silver ice, light and shadow tearing at each other in total silence.

Then the explosion swallowed everything.

Theon was thrown across the lake, his body skipping across the ice like a stone across water. The blade shattered into a hundred glittering fragments mid-air. Whatever had held him upright began to fade, the blue glow in his eyes dimming with every passing second until it guttered out completely, leaving only a boy who had no idea what had just happened to him.

Diablo walked through the settling smoke, wounded, bleeding freely from three separate cuts, but still standing tall, still very much in control, though something in the set of his shoulders suggested the fight had cost him more than he wanted to admit.

He reached out and closed his fingers around the Flame Crystal.

The instant his hand touched it, the cave erupted. Ancient fire burst from the crystal and shot straight through the ceiling in a column of raw light, and the mountain groaned under the strain. The frozen lake split apart in jagged fractures racing from one end of the cavern to the other. Above it all, Lyra’s flames flared wildly, as though answering the crystal’s release with a hunger of their own.

Deep beneath the collapsing cave, Theon’s fading consciousness caught only one clear thought before the darkness closed over him.

*I still couldn’t stop him.*
