“Unlike the Hyuga’s Byakugan in Konoha. The Byakugan has a much longer observation range. Heavy Pupils can only observe a short distance around the user.”
“But Heavy Pupils’ dynamic vision is way better than the Byakugan. I’ve never experienced the Byakugan myself — heard this from my grandfather.”
“And then, the Onime Clan’s Heavy Pupils have innate talent tiers.”
Hozuki Mangetsu was more than happy to fill Yagura in on these obscure facts.
Onime Kaede just nodded along beside him.
Mangetsu counted off on his fingers.
“Blue Pupils have the worst talent — they can only use vision penetration, which is what you’re seeing right now.
Dynamic vision is super strong!
“Purple Pupils are stronger. They can observe chakra. Since genjutsu works by disrupting a person’s chakra, if a ninja falls under genjutsu, any Onime clan member with Purple Pupils or above can detect it immediately!”
Yagura nodded.
So that was it.
But if a kekkei genkai capable of countering genjutsu existed, then why had the original Yagura been controlled by Uchiha Obito for so long?
If Ao hadn’t captured a Byakugan during the Third Great Ninja War and transplanted it, the Hidden Mist Village might have stayed in the dark all the way until the Fourth War.
The original story never mentioned this Mist dojutsu kekkei genkai clan at all.
Had they been wiped out in advance by Uchiha Obito, or the Third Mizukage?
“Next up — this one right here! The Onime Clan’s only golden-pupiled clansman in decades! Onime Kaede!”
“So dumb.”
He edged away from the two, putting distance between himself and Mangetsu’s pointing finger.
Mangetsu didn’t pause, continuing with relish: “Within a certain range, he can share his field of vision with everyone! The only one in the entire Onime Clan!”
“Not just one person?”
“That’s right, a group, a crowd, all fine.” Mangetsu grinned.
“Provided his chakra is sufficient.”
A strategic weapon.
Yagura studied Kaede up and down.
It was no exaggeration.
With access to the world shared through those eyes, even an ordinary ninja could predict in advance what move the opposing ninja was about to make, what nature of ninjutsu they were about to release.
Genjutsu would be directly hard-countered.
And if a ninja had all their movements predicted and countered by an opponent of similar strength, losing the element of surprise, then death was certain.
“He’s the only one with Golden Pupils?”
“Don’t know.”
The taciturn Kaede shook his head lightly.
“But everyone at home says I’m the most talented in the clan. So it should be just me, I think.”
“Ohh.”
The three reached the doorway of Class 1 and filed in.
Yagura dashed to the second-to-last row on the left, taking the window seat.
Protagonist’s spot secured.
Mangetsu and Kaede sat down right next to him.
Seeing Yagura’s group walk in clustered together, they cast curious or astonished looks their way.
None of the trio were the type of ordinary kids who cared about other people’s stares.
They kept talking among themselves without a care.
They waited as the rest of the class trickled in one after another, until the classroom was full.
Yagura gazed thoughtfully at the packed room.
“Everyone knows what Mist’s graduation exam is like. And yet so many parents still send their kids here?”
Mangetsu laughed.
“A ninja village’s kids who don’t become ninja, what else would they do?”
The nation contains the village.
A ninja village has autonomy and independence within its borders, but it’s also the country’s sole military force.
If the Hidden Mist Ninja Village couldn’t produce outstanding ninja to protect the country, then the daimyo government of the Land of Water would just find other ninja to establish a new village and create a new national military force.
Most of the current ninja village powers were already well-established and rarely changed.
But there were always exceptions.
Orochimaru founding the Hidden Sound Village was one such example.
So for children born and raised in a ninja village, entering the Ninja Academy was six years of mandatory education.
Yagura worked through the logic and shrugged.
“Could always run off and sell ramen.”
