Part 2 — The Countermove
For several seconds, nobody in the security room moved.
The number on the screen remained frozen at 17%, and although Emily had successfully blocked the connection, the damage had already been done.
Someone had reached NovaCore.
Someone had managed to penetrate NovaForge's defenses, move through several layers of infrastructure, and begin extracting the company's most valuable technology without triggering a conventional security alarm until the attack was already underway.
Ethan looked at the screen again.
17%.
It was not enough to reconstruct NovaCore.
But it was enough to prove that the attacker had obtained something.
"Emily."
"I'm checking exactly what they accessed."
"Can they use it?"
Emily hesitated.
"Not by itself."
Ethan understood the answer immediately.
"Meaning?"
"The data they extracted is incomplete, but if they combine it with information from another source, it could become useful."
Ethan's expression hardened.
"So they're collecting pieces."
"That's what it looks like."
The room became silent again.
Someone wasn't trying to steal NovaCore in one move.
They were building a copy of it.
Piece by piece.
The Investigation
Ethan opened Corporate Intelligence.
The System displayed the investigation results.
[CORPORATE INTELLIGENCE]
Potential Organization: Apex Technologies Group
Estimated Revenue: $8.7 Billion
Estimated Employees: 42,000+
Primary Industries: Technology / Finance / Entertainment
Technology Level: Extremely High
Interest in NovaForge: Extreme
Interest in NovaCore: Critical
Threat Level: Very High
Connection to Current Breach: 84%
Confidence: 91%
Ethan stared at the screen.
The probability had changed dramatically.
Twenty-one percent.
Then thirty-eight.
Now ninety-one.
That was no longer a coincidence.
But Ethan still noticed something unusual.
"Emily."
"Yes?"
"Why did they route the attack through Helix?"
Emily looked at the network map.
"Probably to hide their identity."
"That's obvious."
Ethan pointed at the screen.
"But why use Helix specifically?"
Emily thought for a moment.
"Maybe Helix doesn't know."
Ethan paused.
"Explain."
"If Apex compromised Helix's systems first, they could use Helix as a proxy."
Ethan nodded slowly.
"So Helix might actually be another victim."
"Possibly."
Ethan opened the Helix investigation.
Several unusual security incidents appeared.
Unauthorized access attempts.
Suspicious employee accounts.
Strange transfers between subsidiaries.
Encrypted communications that Helix itself had apparently failed to identify.
Ethan stared at the data.
"Helix has been compromised."
Emily nodded.
"That's my conclusion."
Ethan leaned back.
Suddenly, the strange behavior made sense.
Helix wasn't necessarily attacking NovaForge directly.
Someone had been using Helix as a shield.
And if that was true, the real enemy was significantly larger than Helix.
Ethan looked at the Apex profile again.
"How certain are you?"
"About Apex being involved?"
"Yes."
Emily checked the data.
"Ninety-one percent."
Ethan nodded.
"Good enough to investigate."
"But not good enough to accuse them publicly."
"I know."
Ethan closed the screen.
"We don't accuse them."
He stood.
"We prepare for them."
The Employee
There was still one problem.
Someone's credentials had been used.
Ethan gathered the relevant employee into a private meeting.
The employee looked nervous the moment he entered the room.
"I didn't do anything."
Ethan raised a hand.
"I know."
The employee looked surprised.
"You do?"
"We've checked the logs."
Emily placed several documents on the table.
"Your account was accessed from locations you've never logged into."
The employee stared at the information.
"So someone stole my password?"
"Most likely."
Ethan leaned forward.
"Did you receive any strange emails recently?"
The employee thought for several seconds.
"I received one asking me to review a document."
"What document?"
"I don't remember."
"Did you open it?"
The employee nodded.
"It looked like a normal company document."
Emily immediately wrote down the information.
"What was the sender?"
The employee gave her the address.
Emily checked it.
Her expression changed.
"It's fake."
Ethan looked at her.
"How fake?"
"The domain was registered recently."
Ethan nodded.
"Then that's probably how they got the credentials."
The employee looked relieved.
"So I'm not being fired?"
Ethan shook his head.
"No."
The employee stared at him.
Ethan continued.
"You're not the attacker."
He paused.
"But from now on, every employee needs security training."
The employee nodded.
"Understood."
As he left the room, Ethan looked at Emily.
"This wasn't an insider."
"No."
"Which means we can stop investigating our own employees as suspects."
Emily nodded.
"That makes our job easier."
Ethan looked at the security reports.
"Not much easier."
The Countermove
By the next morning, NovaForge had completely isolated NovaCore.
The source repository was moved onto a protected internal network.
Access required multiple authentication layers.
Every development computer received new credentials.
External connections were restricted.
Even Ethan himself had to authorize access manually.
The attack was over.
At least for now.
But Ethan knew that simply defending NovaForge wasn't enough.
If Apex really was behind the attack, they would try again.
And next time, they might not make the same mistake.
Ethan walked into the conference room.
"Everyone is here?"
Emily nodded.
Daniel, Lucas, James, Maya, Sarah, Oliver, Ryan, Nathan, and the department heads were already seated.
Ethan placed a folder on the table.
"We have identified the organization behind the attack with a high degree of confidence."
The screen turned on.
Apex Technologies Group.
Several employees looked surprised.
"Who are they?" Daniel asked.
Ethan displayed the information.
"$8.7 billion in estimated revenue."
The room became quiet.
"More than forty thousand employees."
That got everyone's attention.
"And a technology division significantly larger than our entire company."
James looked at the screen.
"Why would a company that large care about us?"
Ethan answered honestly.
"Because NovaCore is valuable."
Nobody argued with that.
But Ethan wasn't finished.
"We aren't going to panic."
He changed the screen.
A new slide appeared.
NOVAForge RESPONSE PLAN
1. Protect NovaCore
2. Complete Genesis
3. Increase Corporate Security
4. Expand Internationally
5. Demonstrate NovaForge's Technology
Daniel looked at the final point.
"Demonstrate?"
Ethan nodded.
"If they want to know what NovaCore can do, we'll show them."
Lucas frowned.
"Wouldn't that make us more of a target?"
"It might."
"Then why do it?"
Ethan smiled slightly.
"Because there's a difference between knowing what something can do and possessing the technology required to reproduce it."
James immediately understood.
"We show them the result without showing them the method."
"Exactly."
NovaForge didn't need to hide forever.
It needed to control what the world saw.
Ethan had spent months making sure NovaCore remained secret.
Now he realized something important.
A secret technology could be stolen.
A public demonstration, however, could become a weapon of its own.
If NovaForge showed the world what it had created before Apex could control the narrative, stealing the technology would become far more difficult.
The Demonstration
Two weeks later, NovaForge invited a limited number of journalists, publishers, developers, and industry representatives to a private technology demonstration.
Genesis was the centerpiece.
But Ethan deliberately avoided showing the NovaCore source code.
Instead, the company demonstrated the engine through Genesis itself.
The game generated massive historical maps.
Cities evolved.
Economies changed.
AI-controlled nations reacted to one another.
Populations migrated.
Wars changed borders.
Technological development altered societies.
And the entire simulation continued running smoothly.
The audience became increasingly quiet.
One journalist finally asked:
"How are you doing this on hardware from this generation?"
Ethan smiled.
"Optimization."
That was all he said.
The audience laughed slightly.
But nobody believed the answer was that simple.
Another journalist asked about NovaCore.
Ethan gave the answer he had prepared.
"NovaCore is an internal technology platform developed by NovaForge Interactive. We aren't currently licensing the core technology."
That sentence spread through the industry within hours.
The demonstration became news.
Not because NovaForge had revealed its secrets.
But because it had revealed enough to prove that the company possessed something unusual.
The attention was immediate.
Publishers contacted NovaForge.
Hardware companies contacted NovaForge.
Investors contacted NovaForge.
Technology companies requested meetings.
And somewhere among those requests was another message from Helix.
But Ethan didn't respond immediately.
He had more important things to check.
System Mission Complete
That evening, Ethan returned to his office.
The System appeared.
[MISSION UPDATE]
Protect NovaCore
Objective 1: Identify the source of the intrusion — COMPLETE
Objective 2: Prevent further unauthorized access — COMPLETE
Objective 3: Secure NovaCore — COMPLETE
Objective 4: Determine internal compromise — COMPLETE
Mission Status: SUCCESS
[REWARD]
2,500 SP
Advanced Corporate Intelligence Upgrade
Corporate Security: +15%
Ethan smiled.
His System Points increased.
3,500 SP → 6,000 SP
For the first time, he had accumulated enough points to make several major upgrades at once.
But Ethan didn't spend them.
Not yet.
The System continued.
[NEW CORPORATE INTELLIGENCE CAPABILITIES]
Advanced Organization Tracking
Technology Threat Analysis
Corporate Network Mapping
Acquisition Prediction
International Market Intelligence
Competitive Technology Forecasting
Ethan stared at the new options.
This was exactly what he needed.
If Apex wanted to operate from the shadows, he needed better intelligence.
He opened the company dashboard.
[NOVAForge INTERACTIVE]
Company Level: 2
Employees: 21 / 25
Revenue: $204,813
Cash: $167,920
Reputation: 31
Technology Level: 2.1
Corporate Stability: 97%
System Points: 6,000 SP
Genesis: 94.7%
NovaCore Engine: Operational
Advanced AI Framework: 88%
Ethan looked at the Genesis progress.
Ninety-four point seven percent.
The game was almost finished.
And for the first time, Ethan could see the next major milestone clearly.
Company Level Three.
Four more employees.
Nearly three hundred thousand dollars more revenue.
More reputation.
Genesis had to succeed.
And NovaForge needed an international partnership.
Ethan smiled.
They had survived the first serious attack.
But surviving wasn't enough.
He wanted to make sure NovaForge became too important to destroy.
The Final Warning
Ethan was about to close the System when another notification appeared.
He frowned.
This one wasn't from Corporate Intelligence.
It was something else.
[UNKNOWN TECHNOLOGY DETECTED]
Origin: Unknown
Technology Level: FAR ABOVE CURRENT INDUSTRY STANDARD
Similarity to NovaCore: 7%
Known Organization: None
Possible Connection: Apex Technologies Group
System Knowledge: RESTRICTED
Reason: Insufficient Information
Ethan froze.
"Restricted?"
That was a word he had almost never seen from the System.
The System could refuse to provide information because it didn't know something.
But this was different.
It was saying the knowledge itself was restricted.
Ethan stared at the notification.
Someone else possessed technology far beyond what should exist in the year 2000.
And if Apex was connected to it, then the attack on NovaForge might not have been about NovaCore at all.
NovaCore might have been the reason they had noticed him.
But there could be something much bigger happening behind the scenes.
Ethan slowly closed the System.
Outside his office, NovaForge continued preparing Genesis for release.
The company was closer than ever to becoming a major force in the gaming industry.
But Ethan now understood that reaching Level Three would not simply mean growing the company.
It meant stepping into a world where NovaForge would attract enemies far more powerful than anything he had faced before.
He looked at the dark window overlooking the city.
Then he smiled.
"Fine."
If they wanted a race.
He would race them.
And if they wanted NovaForge's technology, they were going to have to catch up first.
To be continued
