The patriarch of the family had spent the last several years watching his generational wealth slowly dwindle under the crushing weight of imperial inflation. Now, he was possessed by a manic energy.

Every morning before dawn, Cassius was awake, personally overseeing the loading of heavy wooden carts.

He had immediately established a trade route, running convoys of raw ore directly into the bustling local markets of the nearby settlements.

The desperate blacksmith guilds, starved for high-quality iron to fulfill their military quotas, purchased the hematite as fast as Cassius could dump it in the town square.

Cassius was selling the raw material at standard market rates, unaware that in just a few days, his son was going to bankrupt those very same buyers.

To Cassius, the immediate silver denarii filling his lockboxes was proof enough of their impending supremacy.

With the profits rolling in, Cassius engaged in rapid expansion.

Within those four days, he purchased three more reinforced heavy carts and drafted new beasts of burden to pull them.

Recognizing the friction and delays of overland travel, he boldly purchased a flat-bottomed riverboat, allowing them to bypass the congested Roman roads and transport massive bulk shipments down the local tributaries.

Furthermore, to keep up with the extraction rate Lucius had engineered, Cassius returned to the slave markets and the local plebeian squares, hiring five more able-bodied men.

The workforce at the new mine now stood at a firm sixteen laborers. Yet, despite the increase in manpower, the overhead costs were eclipsed by the exponential surge in production.

On the evening of the third day, Cassius had burst into Lucius’s study.

"Lucius, my son!" Cassius had cheered, slamming a pouch of silver onto the desk. "The markets are ravenous! I sold every last pound of the morning’s yield before the sun even reached its peak. We are drowning in coin! In fact, I was speaking with the local magistrates today. The agricultural lands bordering our eastern ridge are facing foreclosure. I am seriously considering purchasing them outright and transitioning a portion of our wealth into mass grain farming."

Lucius nodded. He approved of his father’s newfound ambition.

If they controlled the raw iron, the manufactured steel, and the local agricultural food supply, they would essentially become an independent sovereign power operating within the borders of Gaul.

Let Cassius play the wealthy landowner and manage the farms; it would keep the older man distracted while Lucius engineered the true weapons of their ascension.

Honoring his end of their previous bargain, Cassius had used a generous portion of his newly acquired silver to hire a team of local master builders and masons for Lucius.

If his son wanted to build a forge, Cassius would ensure he had the hands to build it.

However, when the foreman of the builders... a grizzled, experienced mason named Septimus arrived at the estate on the morning of the second day, he was met with absolute bewilderment.

Lucius had unrolled his pristine blueprints upon a makeshift wooden table near the mining site.

Septimus and his crew of masons gathered around, their fingers tracing the geometric lines and orthographic projections with confusion.

"Dominus," Septimus had started, rubbing his chin as he stared at the parchment. "I have built bloomeries and kilns for the finest smiths in this province. A standard forge is a simple clay oven, standing perhaps waist-high, designed to heat the charcoal and the ore together until it forms a workable bloom. What you have drawn here... this is a tower."

Lucius looked at the mason with the detached, paternalistic patience of a university professor dealing with a particularly slow student.

He could not expect a 3rd-century bricklayer to understand the concepts of a blast furnace.

"..." Lucius paused, tapping a finger against the detailed cross-section of the furnace’s interior.

"You will build the stack exactly fifteen feet high, utilizing the heat-resistant fireclay and refractory bricks my father purchased.

The interior lining must be perfectly cylindrical to ensure an even distribution of thermal radiation.

At the base, you will not build a simple air hole. You will construct dual, angled tuyeres that will connect to the pressurized bellows system I am currently assembling."

Septimus looked at the young patrician as if Lucius had begun speaking in Parthian. "Fifteen feet high? And this lower chamber... you have drawn a separate taphole at the very bottom. For what purpose? The iron will not flow like water, young master. It will be a spongy mass that must be dragged out and hammered."

"Just build it exactly as I have drawn it, Septimus," Lucius commanded. "You are being paid triple the standard rate for your labor. I expect precision."

The promise of exorbitant silver quickly silenced any further architectural objections.

For the next three days, the masons worked under Lucius’s unrelenting supervision.

The young engineer paced around the construction site like a hawk, correcting the mortar mix when it lacked the necessary silica content to withstand extreme heat, and forcing the builders to tear down and rebuild the tuyeres when the angle of the air intake was off by a mere three degrees.

He needed the Venturi effect to perfectly funnel the oxygen into the combustion chamber, and he would not accept archaic, ’good enough’ Roman craftsmanship.

By the afternoon of the fourth day, the structure was finally complete.

The blast furnace towered over the landscape, a reinforced chimney of cured fireclay and brick that looked alien in the pastoral setting of ancient Gaul.

Adjacent to the stone structure was the dual-chambered mechanical bellows system Lucius had personally assembled from cured leather and timber... a pressurized lung waiting to breathe life into the inferno.

Lucius stood before the furnace, running his hand over the masonry.

As Lucius stared at the levers that operated the bellows, and the standardized clay casting molds he had meticulously prepared to receive the liquid steel, a harsh reality settled over his mind.

Operating a blast furnace of this magnitude was not a solitary endeavor. The bellows required continuous pumping to maintain the massive influx of oxygen necessary to push the internal temperature past 1500 degrees Celsius.

Once the iron liquefied and the carbon was introduced to create steel, the tapping of the furnace and the pouring of the molten metal into the standardized gladius and polearm molds required immense physical strength and precise coordination.

After the steel cooled, it would need to be quenched, tempered, and ground to a razor edge.

He needed men. But he did not just need strong backs; he needed men who would abandon centuries of blacksmithing superstitions and follow his exact instructions without question.
