The final week of filming passed without further incident, though Mark never fully shook the feeling of being watched.

He caught himself scanning crowds more than once, cataloguing strangers’ faces against a mental list of nobody in particular, a habit he suspected wouldn’t fade easily now that it had taken root.

Alice’s monitoring turned up no further attempts to reinstall surveillance on the production’s network, and the fabricated trail pointing toward a disgruntled former CAA contractor sat quietly in place, untouched as far as Mark could tell, though he had no illusions about how long that would hold if anyone with real resources decided to look harder.

*For now, it’s enough.

It has to be.*

The last scenes to shoot were, fittingly, the film’s emotional climax: the mother and son reunited after a frantic search through the park at closing time, the boy having wandered off one time too many, the mother’s controlled composure finally cracking into something raw.

Caleb had saved it for last deliberately, wanting the cast worn thin enough by the shoot’s demands that exhaustion would bleed naturally into the performance.

It worked better than he could have planned.

“Cut!

That’s a wrap!”

The moment the words left Caleb’s mouth, the boardwalk set erupted into applause, crew members clapping and whistling, a few visibly wiping at their eyes.

Rosalie, still in character’s threadbare cardigan, sank down onto the fake park bench and let out a long, shaking breath, tears streaking through her makeup that weren’t entirely performance.

“That’s it?

We’re really done?”

“We’re really done.” Caleb crouched down in front of her, grinning ear to ear.

“Rosalie, I’ve directed a lot of actors.

That last take, what you just gave me, that’s the kind of performance that gets people noticed.

I mean it.”

Mark, still in his own costume, wandered over and climbed into his mother’s lap without being asked, partly for the cameras still lingering nearby, partly because some small, genuine part of him wanted the comfort after weeks of tension he’d been careful never to let her see.

“You did so good, Mom.”

“We did good, baby.” Rosalie pressed a kiss to the top of his head, holding him tight enough that a few crew members nearby made soft, sentimental noises.

“I couldn’t have done any of this without you.”

*More true than you know,* Mark thought, though he kept the observation to himself, letting the moment be what it looked like on the surface: a mother and son, exhausted and proud, at the end of a hard month’s work. New chapters come out on g.com first.

They flew home three days later, the film now in the hands of an editor, months away from any release date, but the hardest part behind them regardless.

Rosalie spent most of the flight half-asleep against the window, worn thin in a way that looked more peaceful than the anxious exhaustion she’d carried on the way out.

Mark, wide awake as always, spent the flight quietly reviewing everything Alice had gathered during their time in New York.

The fabricated trail.

The state of *Duskbound*’s sales, which had continued climbing steadily even while he’d been half a country away, now sitting close to eighteen thousand dollars total.

The second game, still in early development, waiting for his attention once they were home.

And underneath all of it, a single unresolved thread he kept circling back to.

*Coulson knew enough to come looking specifically for me.

That means someone at SHIELD connected dots I thought were better hidden.

Fury, probably.

He’s the one who ordered the original tracking attempt.*

He had no way of knowing, sitting in coach with a complimentary juice box balanced on his tray table, whether the misdirection Alice had planted would actually hold.

He’d find out eventually, one way or another, either through silence that stretched long enough to count as success, or through another visit from a man in a well-tailored suit who already knew better than to bother introducing himself twice.

*Either way, I need to be stronger before that happens again.*

Level nine had put him in rarified company already, but rarified wasn’t the same as safe.

Not in a world with gods falling out of the sky and billionaires building weapons in caves.

He thought, not for the first time, about what waited at level ten, the threshold Rosalie’s God-given cheat had promised him back in that grimy little clinic room five years ago.

A new power, unlocked.

Something beyond raw intelligence, if the pattern held.

He didn’t know what it would be.

But he intended to find out soon.

Home again, Clyme Street welcomed them back with the particular quiet normalcy that felt almost surreal after a month of cameras and crew and the low hum of being watched.

Daphne, who’d been keeping the house in order and checking in daily by phone, met them at the door with a hug for each of them and a home-cooked meal already waiting on the stove.

“Look at you,” she said, holding Mark out at arm’s length to inspect him.

“You’ve grown, I swear.

New York agreed with you.”

“New York was interesting,” Mark said, carefully neutral, and let it go at that.

That night, once Rosalie had gone to bed early, worn out from the flight and the long month behind it, Mark sat alone at his computer, Alice’s interface glowing softly on the screen beside him.

“Status report.

Everything, all of it.”

“*Duskbound* sales have crossed eighteen thousand two hundred dollars.

The second title, working name *Twinfold*, is roughly forty percent complete based on your last development notes.

No further SHIELD surveillance activity detected on any of our monitored channels since New York.

The fabricated trail remains undisturbed.”

“Good.” Mark leaned back, exhaling slowly, the tension of the past weeks finally starting to unknot from his small shoulders.

“Keep watching.

Flag anything, even if it seems small.”

“Understood.” A pause, and then, in a tone that had grown subtly warmer over the months Mark had spent refining her, Alice added, “Welcome home, Mark.”

He allowed himself a small, genuine smile at that, the first one in days that wasn’t performance.

Outside, Los Angeles sunlight slanted warm and familiar through the window, nothing like New York’s cold, watchful gray, and somewhere in the back of his mind, the count ticked steadily upward once more.

**[Sunlight Points: 4,650]**

*Almost there,* he thought, closing his eyes and letting himself, just for tonight, simply be tired.

*Level ten.
